Either that or he was actually grinding tournaments not ranked. You can also get demoted by bad teammates, recently I was demoted in tournament ranks (from diamond to plat) because of my buddy being idle in 2v2, the next game I had a super crappy teammate. The next occasion I got 2nd and won a tournament as well. Also, you don’t get point for cutting your opponents rotation .. I’d like to see the replay to see what’s going on 😉
