The top 10 feels kinda frozen lately. A lot of the players up there are clearly strong, no shade at all—but many of them got their spot through provisional rating boosts, then stopped playing once they landed a trophy. The current #1 has only played 60 games total. That’s wild for a leaderboard that’s supposed to reflect ongoing excellence.
It’s not nearly as messy as what we see on Chess.com’s variant boards (which are a whole other story), but it’s still a problem. The hill’s meant to be climbed, not camped on.
Some ideas that might help:
Cap the impact of provisional games so early wins don’t inflate ratings too fast.
Highlight active streaks or recent performance alongside peak rating.
Maybe even a seasonal reset or rotating leaderboard to keep things fresh.
Would love to hear what others think. I’m not trying to call anyone out—just want the hill to feel alive again. Right now it’s more like a museum of past climbs.
