Hello Lichess Team,I’m developing a bot and I’d like to request permission to test a new feature: the !hint command.
This feature will:Work only in casual games (never in rated games)Be limited to 7 hints maximum per game (firsthint, secondhint, etc.)Give the best move for the current variant (Standard, Chess960, Atomic, Crazyhouse, Antichess, etc.)Be purely for learning and fun — not for competitive advantageI will make sure it’s clearly announced in the bot’s profile, and that rated games are never affected.
Please let me know if this is acceptable or if there are extra requirements I should follow.Thank you for your time and for maintaining such a great platform.
#Permission Request – Testing !hint Command for Casual Games

I think you can only use outside help against “play with computer”, not against bots, it’s in the faq
Sorry, What do you mean? I mean Can I add !hint command for bots? It just only set for human. Not for bots.
Then bot give {Best Move} , And only allow it for casual not rated
And be limited 7hints
Just to clarify — my !hint command is not for bots, and it won’t work in rated games. It’s only for when a human plays casual against my bot, and only if they request it. It’s limited to 7 hints max per game, works for all variants, and is purely for learning/training. I want to confirm with Lichess staff if this setup is allowed before enabling it.
Human- firsthint
Bot- Hint 1: The suggested move is Nc3 with evaluation +0.22
Human- secondhint
Bot- Hint2: The suggested move is Qc2 with evaluation +0.19
Human- thirdhint
Bot- Hint 3: The suggested move is Qc2 with evaluation +0.18
player- fourthhint
Bot- Hint 4: The suggested move is cxd5 with evaluation +0.16
like this
he is trying to explain, that hints can't be used in games against bots, even if the bots are the one giving hints
||@vestal temple|| Is there anything wrong with the way I described the !hint feature? I only want to be sure it follows Lichess rules before I add it. It’s human-only, casual games only, and limited to 7 hints per game. If something here isn’t allowed, could you let me know exactly which part?
Not sure it’s come up before. Pretty sure some bots already have !eval 🤔
Yes,
!eval only shows the engine’s score for the position (e.g. +1.25 or-0.80) and maybe depth, but it doesn’t give the move.
!hint in my bot would give the exact best move — but only in casual games, max 7 per game, and only if the human requests it. It’s meant for training, not rated play.
It’s especially useful for training in chess variants, where good practice tools are rare.
