i can help! while im not a math expert nor an astrologer, im pretty sure the ellipse shape of planet orbits are because of the laws of attraction and repulsion, and from my limited physics knowledge, the larger the mass and the farther the distance, the stronger the attraction between two objects, and at the same time the object also repells the object pulling it, and because of the force of the object's mass and the force of attraction from the larger mass, the object takes the middle path between these two forces and moves in a slightly bent elliptic orbit around that mass, this has been observed not just in planets, but also in normal objects as well (look up cavendish experiment)
