#Heavy stuttering despite decent rig?

Hey all returning Mord player after a few years saving up for a new build been trying to get Mordhau to run at a consistent frametime but I can't seem to solve the stuttering. Nothing looks to be throttling or bottlenecked but then again wouldn't really know what a bottleneck would look like. Specs are below

5600x
6700xt Reference
MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Max
G Skill Trident Z 2x16gb 3600mhz
Corsair RM750

Is the game poorly optimized or is there something wrong with my rig? Tried DDU and latest/earlier drivers even a clean install of w10 I'm stunned because games like DOOM Eternal, MW2, RE2 all run flawlessly at high or ultra settings 100-200 (depending on the game) 1440p 165hz but Mordhau struggles to keep a consistent 100+. Any help is appreciated and happy early holidays 🙂

Before performing these steps, you should back up your Game.ini and Input.ini file, located in %localappdata%\Mordhau\Saved\Config\WindowsClient. Game.ini contains your loadouts and Input.ini contains your keybinds, which sometimes can't be restored after deleting these files.

To hard reset your settings, you can delete these files below. If you cannot find them, you will need to enable "show hidden files and folders" in Windows, or open Run and paste this command %localappdata%\Mordhau and hit enter. I would suggest this for unexplainable loss of performance, and other strange issues. This will completely reset your game preferences, so take care to remember important settings. If you cannot locate these app data, or these files, you will need to enable the setting "show hidden files and folders" as most users have these types of folders hidden by default.

#

how strong are the stutters? Is it just mild framedrops like occasionally dropping from 100 to 95 for example or stronger?

old nacelle
novel pivot
#

a drop like that isnt really bad

#

is it a slow down

#

or a stutter as you said

#

im not sure how you could even notice

old nacelle
#

Yeah I mean as soon as I get into a big battle or run into the battlefield I can notice a heavy stutter for that split second but it's constant

deft sail
#

yeah I was gonna say that isn‘t a concerning drop or change, it‘s about the same for me too, some maps are a bit more tanky, also it depends a lot on how many players are on the server etc

novel pivot
#

it may not even be the fps directly

#

so do the hard reset

#

when did you last do a clean driver install

old nacelle
#

Last night I actually clean installed windows 10 entirely and got my mobo chipset/gpu drivers. I did read someone on here had a AMD card with the 22.5.2 version apparently going to a earlier version fixed his stutter ill try that if this doesn't fix

novel pivot
#

oh good you got your main drivers

#

amd is always a struggle with this stuff

#

I shall try to help though

old nacelle
#

Honestly really regretting i went amd lol bought this during the gpu crisis and built just now

novel pivot
#

yeah this card has popped up a ton in here too

#

well its a common card

#

so does the 1060ti etc

#

I run amd cpu myself, I just never get their gpus

old nacelle
#

Oh boy im guessing amd still has massive driver issues?

novel pivot
#

anyway I can look at your logs after

#

yeah they should be good by now Id think though

#

its a seasoned card now

#

2 years I think?

old nacelle
#

Yeah i just deleted those files and i still feel that stutter, actually notice my gpu load take a hit when the stutters occur at least it looks like it

novel pivot
#

ok find your log file

#

its called mordhau.log

#

hmm I dont have the game installed myself atm eithe

#

uhh lets se

old nacelle
#

it's a text file?

old nacelle
novel pivot
#

can you play a longer game

#

there isnt much here

#

or send me an older one

old nacelle
#

yeah fs would one full match be enough or longer?

novel pivot
#

thats fine

#

Im just looking for anything suspicious

old nacelle
#

Gotcha be back very soon 🙂

old nacelle
#

Sorry for the long wait hopefully this is good, there were some massive stutters in dungeon frontlines

novel pivot
#

hmm im not seeing much

#

there is a fair bit of the game freaking out over res changes

old nacelle
#

Res changes? Like the resolution?

novel pivot
#

kinda

#

can you go into settings and apply your res again

#

try borderless/windowed etc

#

I just want see to see if it helps

old nacelle
#

I tried borderless window and manually changed my res down and back to native no luck :((

#

Maybe i should try earlier gpu drivers? Just to narrow that out

#

Wait i noticed something in afterburner my ram clock speed went from 1990mhz down to 889 when the stutter occurred. I mean thats the only time i saw that happen though

novel pivot
#

are you running over clocks at all?

#

definitely don't do that

old nacelle
#

Not that i know of at least the gpu is stock settings only oc is xmp and i think amds cpb for the cpu are those considered ocs?

#

Also tried more earlier versions of drivers didn’t help gonna go back to latest

novel pivot
#

xmp on amd may be an issue

#

as xmp is an intel thing

#

but hard to say

#

but I ran xmp for years with no issues either

#

hmm its possible that the ram just cant keep that speed

#

I suppose you could briefly try their native speed

#

and see

#

thats quite the drop

old nacelle
#

I tested ram at stock no difference 😦 same with cpb on a earlier testing i really cant pinpoint the exact cause and tbh i think thats my vram clock cause it said “memory” under gpu my ram monitoring section was below my cpu setup

#

So it seems something gpu related? :((

novel pivot
#

I wonder if forcing dx12 may help

#

worth a try I suppose

old nacelle
#

I didn’t try that anything is worth trying afraid its my rig now lmao

novel pivot
#

well mordhau certainly isnt as well optimized as the single player games you mention

#

its just not possib

#

but it is optimized in general

#

your fps is decent

#

but unfortunately, Im not graphics engineer, I can only speculate

#

but try -dx12

#

in the games launch parameters

#

"-dx12"

old nacelle
#

Yeah think that made it a bit worse actually lol

novel pivot
#

possibly

#

we already optimized the game in a similar fashion

#

alright take that off

#

is your monitor freesync or something?

#

some people had issues with that

#

im just googling your card at this point

old nacelle
#

Yeah i tried without it but ill go again, probably is just amd at this point

novel pivot
#

how about if you cap your fps?

#

to say 100

#

there are just so many potential fixes to try

#

is there a performance setting you can switch on in amds software?

#

like run the game max all the time

#

this is from a 3 month old thread

#

its all longshots though

old nacelle
#

You mean the graphical settings? I capped the fps via rtss to 100 it seems better just one tick down but that stutter isnt as bad :)) progress??

novel pivot
novel pivot
#

maybe take a look at this one

#

various things to try

old nacelle
#

I dont want to jinx anything rn cause its only been 2 mins but it runs so much smoother. I mean less smooth cause of the difference in frames but way less stutter

novel pivot
#

I remember people had success with stuff like this years ago too

#

well yeah see how it goes

old nacelle
#

I mean it still stutters but definitely way less

#

Gonna try the full screen optimizations and clock method now

old nacelle
#

I guess that was a fluke new game on peak started and the stutters are constant even with optimizations and clocks i cant even rn lmao

distant roost
#

its amd related

#

You need to up the clock speed, on mordhau the gpu runs very low and/or has high frequency drops because its not "demanding" enough

#

I do this with a 6900xt, default max frequency is 2574 MHz, but I lowered it with 100 and increased the min frequency to 100 under of max frequency as well as lowering the voltage. this is set on Mordhau-Win64-Shipping as a profile so these changes don't apply globally

novel pivot
#

ah someone did mention that in the reddit thread

#

@old nacelle

#

hopefully this helps

old nacelle
#

Tried that looked up my reference card frequency and followed the steps still the same result, maybe its something on my end at this point? Might reassemble the pc if worst comes to worst

novel pivot
#

one thing I saw mentioned in the reddit thread, was even not using the correct cables, who knows

old nacelle
#

correct pcie cables? I'm pretty sure I put them in right but who knows lol figure it out soon but I did use two seperate cables not one and two ends split

novel pivot
#

I think 2 seperate cables is ideal yeah

distant roost
#

Yeah, you do not want to pigtail the PCIe power cables, 8-pin is able to provide 150W and 75W for 6-pin
