We’re aware that many of you have been experiencing connection issues, lag, and outages recently on a lot of Rust servers. These problems are the result of ongoing large-scale DDoS attacks affecting multiple gaming networks across the gaming industry — including our own servers.

We know how frustrating this is, especially for those trying to play, compete, or enjoy time with friends. We sincerely apologize for the interruptions and the impact they’ve had on your experience.

What is happening:
When an attack reaches tens of terabits per second it strains global network infrastructure, can impact ISPs, CDNs, and carry collateral damage to non-gaming services. Larger infrastructure backbone operators are fundamentally changing their own TOS and how they operate due to these attacks, which is impacting some ancillary DDoS protection services. Our previous networking provider got kicked out from one of the largest providers in the world (Datapacket/CDN77) because these attacks were affecting them so much.

It's affecting around 52,000 concurrent rust players (of the 180,000 peek pop this month). This is not an issue that is affecting a small portion of servers.

This is not just bad servers or a bad host. Several billion dollar companies and major gaming platforms including Steam, Riot Games, etc. have experienced simultaneous disruptions as a result of the same botnet that is attacking the game servers.

Yes, the disconnects and lag is bad, and we know how frustrating this is. But this isn’t about server owners being cheap, it’s an global issue caused by massive DDoS attacks that need to be addressed at the game’s core level.

I have personally advocated for Facepunch to enable estimated ping which would allow us to switch from Rust specific hosts to the ones that can handle such massive attacks for years now. I increased being much more vocal about the issue to Facepunch in the last week as well, however, I have yet to receive their acknowledgement that they will do that.
You can help: Start advocating for estimated ping to be enabled as well in Rust discord, Rust subreddit, etc.

We’re actively working on solutions with our hosting provider to stabilize things which takes time. We expect our hosting provider to have a short term remedy within the next few days. We’re doing absolutely everything in our power to get rid of this lag and disconnects.
