I have been developing in Python for many years both academically, for my own stuff, and professionally. And I have a project idea recommendation to rewrite pip (Pythons package manager) in Rust. The app itself is basically a glorified zipping tools/file downloader so it shouldn't be hard. Additionally, pip works on in 1 thread so just that leaves a lot to be improved. With it being rewritten in Rust we could save thousands if not millions of hours for many different servers installing Python packages. So im looking for people that would like to help me with that project 😄 If you are interested @ me here 🙂

Hi, I am a professional SDET(test automation engineer) with years of experience and working with python on a daily basis. I have been learning rust for a while(books, excercism, some simple actix-web), but still would see myself as a beginner to the rust language. I could start from the rust testing side potentially developing slowly some other things.

Open source desktop, webpage and mobile app
In AUTODOX we are building a modern decentralized application with dfinity IC and all built with rust. The frontend is using YEW framework the desktop uses TAURI with surealDB and cloud backend using dfinity IC using rust (not motoko). This is probably a new way of building apps and it may help you to learn a lot. Also, I believe all websites and apps should be built in this way in the near future.

@bright ingot @grave rapids since both of you specifically mentioned graphics, I wonder if you'd like to take a look at: https://github.com/clearlysid/cypher

I found the screen capture space lacking in the modern day dev-tooling especially now that we have newer OS-APIs like Apple's (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/screencapturekit/) and Windows' (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/windows.graphics.capture?view=winrt-22621)

I know the project is in a bit of a rough state (no readme, docs, etc.) but we can change that fairly easily if you'd like to lend a hand.

Hi everyone, I am just starting my Rust journey with a little project of mine : https://gitlab.com/romzorus/karnaboo. The goal is to help sysadmins handle their update flows in a centralized way. This is mostly based on "apt-cacher-ng" and "ArangoDB" (with a little touch of bash scripting).
It isn't a low level program but for a beginner like myself, it puts in motion most of the important concepts (multi-threading, networking, async, dealing with a database, interaction with the operating system, reading config files) so I think it can be interesting for other beginners as well.
I made a video to present the project : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUFpegW3hGQ
I'm not a professional programmer (and non native speaker) so don't be surprised to find strange things in the code and english mistakes (feel free to point them out).

# digital moon hey i'm taking a career break from being an enterprise backend dev and learning ...

NOTE: I am not actively pursuing this right now and me and the other person who were initially working on this have switched to another project so this post is moot.

I'm thinking about building a DAW in Rust with WASM, Leptos, and WGPU. Not sure how much experience you have with audiodev, graphics programming, or WASM but there will be a lot of backend and frontend alike. I'm pretty experienced at Rust at this point and would love to teach my knowledge! Not sure what will come out of it or even if I'll be able to finish it but it will definitely be a learning experience for me and if that sounds interesting, I'd love to get in touch and maybe get someone else on board. I'm still very much trying to plan and figure out a vision of what I want the experience to be like.

#

If anyone else is interested, feel free to ping. I would like to keep any core team small at least to start though.

#

@stone narwhal What do you think of the above? It's all WASM and may be either in the browser or in Tauri so no interfacing with the OS directly at all but it will involve lol-level audiodev and cross-platform yet low-level GPU access. Totally understand though if you're looking for something else though. Btw, on an unrelated note, have you ever considered looking into embedded / OSdev / microkernaling? I've kinda gotten into that stuff too to a degree though I'm looking at the above project for now.

# safe bough hi, would you be willing to work with somewhat beginners ?

Yes. To note, I've shelved the project I described for now since I got in touch with someone else here and realized that it was way too ambitious for what I could put in right now and there were so many moving parts right off the bat that it turned the steep learning curve into a cliff. I'm still in contact with anarchy.net but project goals there are currently undefined. I'm not sure what you'd be interested in but I'd be happy to act as a mentor and help out in some smaller projects. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts

Currently me, that other person, and someone else are looking into making a new Rust ML framework. The other two are intermediate in Rust and very beginner but fluent in C++ respectively. I don't know if you want to try joining up with us or if you want to work on something more independently that I can help out a little in and answer any questions.

Hi. I just modified the original message I wrote as people like you understandable keep stumbling onto it even though it's no longer active. I've shelved that project for now to focus on another project with someone else I've met here and their own buddy, funny enough, involving ML. It's currently a total mess if I'm being honest but we're slowly making some progress. I can invite you to our own server but I warn you: it can get rather chaotic and random.

Two others have shown interest, joined the other server, and immediately ghosted both it and me for some reason. I have absolutely no idea why as I've tried reaching out to see what I could do to help make things more welcoming to them but to no avail.

If you want to work on a DAW like that, I'd love to help you with that although I am a little stretched thin right now. Working on a prototype with another person, especially one with as much actual experience as you on this subject on a prototype would teach me and bring me a lot of insight into how to make a remake full version as I anticipate that whatever I come up with initially will likely be a mess that that I will end up remaking anyways. That's my two cents though about that.

Another thing, just in case you're interested is that I've been spending some time drafting a specification for my own esoteric programming language although the eventual JIT and possible compiler will likely be C++ projects due to having to work with LLVM. Who knows though; maybe I could make it work with CXX in near-pure Rust.

Ultimately, it's your call and whatever sounds most interesting to you if you're still interested.

Shiva: A New Project, an Alternative to Apache Tika and Pandoc
I began the journey of the Shiva project with the first commit in March 2024, aiming to create a versatile tool written in Rust for document parsing and conversion. Over the months, it has grown significantly, expanding support for a wide range of file formats including HTML, Markdown, plain text, PDF, JSON, CSV, RTF, DOCX, XML, XLS, XLSX, ODS, and Typst. Shiva is an open-source project, and its repository can be found at https://github.com/igumnoff/shiva

The goal with Shiva is to provide an alternative to established tools like Apache Tika, written in Java, and Pandoc, developed in Haskell. While these tools have long been staples for developers working with documents, Shiva aims to offer a simple and efficient alternative that can handle the growing diversity and complexity of digital documents. Hi, I'm thinking it'd be good to have a generic database API crate similar to how tls-api exists as a generic tls API. It'd make it easier for developers to build Rust tooling that is database-agnostic for most of its code.

It would be similar in purpose to ODBC and JDBC (minimize vendor lock-in to a particular database). Of course you wouldn't be able to switch databases at run-time, but you could build your software such that you would have a 99% common core, then a Feautres for particular database implementations.

#

The API could be based on an existing tool's API as a starting point.

I built a FastAPI profiler with a Rust core (PyO3) that keeps all metrics in-memory for minimal overhead.

The Rust side handles response time collection, percentile calculations, and endpoint stats. Next up is database query timing but I'm still figuring out the cleanest architecture.

Code is small but handles the essentials (circular buffer for time series, O(1) lookups, lazy sorting for percentiles). Looking for feedback on memory management approaches and Rust/Python API design if anyone's interested: https://github.com/al91liwo/fastapi-profiler-lite

I'm always looking for contributions on my game engine. It's different from other game engines in the sense that it's really simple to write game logic and requires very minimal setup as well as that the focus is on simplicity over rust ideology. I'm mainly working on the 3D pipeline, and I could use a lot of help in developing more 2D tools and improving that side of the workflow as it's not just important for games, but also for UI.

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for contributors for Sockudo, a high-performance, Pusher-compatible WebSockets server written in Rust. We're building a robust, memory-efficient, and low-latency solution for real-time communication, especially useful for those in the Laravel ecosystem or anyone needing a scalable WebSocket server.

I'd be thrilled to collaborate with folks who are comfortable with or interested in:

Rust development: Core feature development, performance optimizations, and writing idiomatic Rust.
WebSocket protocols: Understanding and implementing nuances of WebSocket communication and the Pusher protocol.
Networking: Low-level networking, TCP/IP, async programming (we're using Tokio).
Database Integrations: Experience with MySQL, DynamoDB for app management, or Redis for caching/scaling.
Message Queue Systems: Knowledge of Redis (as a queue) or SQS.
Horizontal Scaling: Concepts and implementation using Redis, Redis Cluster, or NATS adapters.
DevOps/Infrastructure: CI/CD (GitHub Actions is used for releases), Docker, deployment strategies.
Monitoring & Metrics: Experience with Prometheus or similar monitoring tools.
Testing: Writing unit, integration, and performance tests.
Documentation: Improving our guides, API documentation, and examples.
If any of these areas sound interesting, or if you have other ideas on how you could contribute, please feel free to message me or reply here!

thx for the advice, i do have some contributors which i do thank them and i do respect they are basically volunteers (thats the premise of open source), tho i wish it was more streamlined experience, im worried, i get i am the leader and i take most tasks at hand, but man is it a lot of stuff even for a small (but significant) part of the project

turbid sparrow
# spare folio I’d suggest continuing to build and being patient. Pressuring too much can disco...

also a bit of a followup more as a question, since im quite stumped, honestly even if i try:

  • Document heavily every single thing without being too extensive nor too brief, where the documentation is litterally 50% of the codebase (6.5k lines of code to put it in context, that it is around 48 english essays/articles written) plus tell contributors how to work in the project
  • Provide a relatively good experience without boilerplate and friction points

Tho im not trying to brag nor i try to attract contributors with this question specifically, but I still don't get much attraction, while others do

cosmic tangle
#

do you have a list of what stuff has to be done in order to finish atleast a 0.1?

#

and if you have a goal in mind, make sure to communicate that

#

in order to make projects of any kind out of thin air, even if you know little to nothing about what you're doing, you have to create some sort of path

#

and if you want feedback, you need to get something done first, in this case, its a tool, so make a tiny project with it

#

test it yourself, and once you managed to make something with it, then ask for feedback

spare folio
#

Attraction can’t be forced. People are naturally more inclined to contribute to established projects, especially when those projects align with their interests and values. I recently shared my own project here - while I haven’t gained any active contributors yet, I’ve had some good discussions and received valuable feedback. For now, I’m staying patient and continuing to build, hoping to eventually connect with others who share an interest in decentralized collaboration.

Hey there, My name is Bilal Khan. I started learning Rust 1 year ago. Since then, I have made a few projects that you can check here https://github.com/ibilalkayy/my_work. Before that, I was a Golang dev for more than 2 years, and I was also creating YouTube videos, but I didn't get a job, so I switched to Rust development(because a friend told me), and I liked working with Rust. Also it's been a month since I got a Junior Rust Developer job locally, which pays me $200/month.

Along the side, I am also trying to crack open source and contribute to projects like Cargo package manager itself and Extricrate(Divides the files into multiple modules using CLI). To be honest, the maintainers are really helpful, but I am unable to make the contributions as they say. Recently, the Extricrate project maintainer apologized to me for not continuing here and returning after some time, and a similar thing happened with Cargo also, where the maintainer asked me to return after making some projects. Although I made the projects and returned, but I still have a fear of rejection again.

I just wanted to know if anyone can help me continue the open source journey and not be rejected again.

Hello, I am looking to contribute to Rust projects (I am also looking for a job where I can work with Rust at least part time). I am beginner in Rust and systems engineering tho I studied electronics 10y ago and I spent the last few months learning, coding and reading extensively about system design, low level systems and Rust. Here is the cover letter I created: https://www.diksipav.com/cover-letter/.

I spent few days just understanding locks and parking_lot crate, I'd love to contribute to this one but there are no many open issues atm.

I love projects that involve concurrency and deep tech projects (databases, compilers etc) but I am also opened to more relaxed projects, anything where I can build solid Rust experience. Thank you! 💜

I also have a crate I'm working on that's going to be incredibly similar to linfa and also smartcore (called spindalis)! It originally started on the suggestion of one of my classmates to work on manifold learning algorithms (still to come) but I became really interested in specifically making ergonomic ways to deal with polynomial inputs

I can't say my take is the best way to deal with things as I'm still new to Rust but it's been an interesting journey so far with this project that is still very much in its early stages

I wouldn't say we are competitors. You are developing some general, extendable scheduling library. I am developing decentralized collaboration platform, what happens to include a scheduler for managing it's own tasks. It's much smaller, much more opinionated, but quite capable for my needs.
But of course we can discuss things. I have seen something about your struggle with persistence without registration, but to be honest I have no idea how to solve that. I simply used registration, it's fine for my use case.

Hey everyone,

I've been working on CForge, a build system and project manager for C and C++ that aims to bring a more modern, streamlined experience to native development. Think of it as something like Cargo for Rust, but for C/C++ projects.

What is CForge?

CForge is a CLI tool that wraps CMake and handles the tedious parts of C/C++ project management:

  • Project scaffolding - cforge init creates a new project with a sensible structure and a simple cforge.toml config file
  • Dependency management - Pull in Git repos or vcpkg packages with cforge add, and CForge handles the rest
  • Simple build commands - cforge build, cforge run, cforge test do what you'd expect
  • Workspaces - Manage multiple related projects together (like Cargo workspaces)
  • Cross-platform - Works on Windows (MSVC), Linux (GCC), and macOS (Clang)

The goal is to reduce the friction of starting and maintaining C/C++ projects without hiding CMake entirely. You can still drop down to raw CMake when needed.

What's new in v2.2.0

This release adds a bunch of commands I've wanted for a while:

cforge watch - File watcher that auto-rebuilds when you save. Add --run to automatically run after successful builds. Great for quick iteration.

cforge bench - Google Benchmark integration. Run benchmarks with filtering and JSON/CSV output.

cforge tree - Visualize your dependency tree in the terminal with color-coded output for different dependency types.

cforge new - Scaffold files from templates. cforge new class MyClass generates the header and source file with boilerplate.

cforge doc - Generate Doxygen documentation with a single command.

cforge lock - Lock file support for reproducible builds. Commit cforge.lock to your repo and run cforge lock --verify in CI.

cforge fmt and cforge lint - Wrappers around clang-format and clang-tidy.

cforge completions - Generate shell completions for bash, zsh, fish, and PowerShell.

I also increased the default build timeout from 60s to 10 minutes, which should help on slower CI runners or large Release builds.

What's new in v2.2.1

Patch release fixing several Windows-specific issues:

  • Fixed the cforge update command to actually work (it was cloning the repo but not building/installing)
  • Fixed file permission errors during self-update on Windows
  • Fixed CMake version parsing for release candidates and alpha versions
  • Fixed the min/max macro conflict that was breaking cforge watch on Windows
  • Standardized install paths so manual installs and cforge update put the binary in the same place

Links

Would love to hear feedback, bug reports, or feature requests. Still in beta so expect some rough edges, but it's stable enough for personal projects and I've been using it daily.

Developers Needed To Test ChronoGrapher

Hey fellas! As you may guessed, this isn't the typical contributor help post, rather it has to do with testing (to be fair its some form of contribution and actually a valuable at that).

ChronoGrapher is slowly but surely being materialized, its core is being finished (for now without persistence). We will require some of the help of testers (developers) looking to shape the future decissions of ChronoGrapher by simply giving their constructive feedback

We want testers (developers) ideally with experience in complex scheduling systems such as:

  • Temporal
  • Apache Airflow
  • Candece
  • Prefect
  • Dagster

Bonus points if you already know either:

  • BullMQ
  • Sidekiq
  • Celery
  • Quartz

If none of these are your thing, then you should at least know either:

  • tokio_schedule
  • CRON
  • node-cron
  • APScheduler

Depending on the programming languages, you may be tasked to test specific bindings made by our team.

The job of these testers is:

  • Find any detail that bothers them (and compared to other established solutions)
  • Stress-test ChronoGrapher in both performance, scalability and mantainability by implementing some projects
  • Provide constructive critism about their experience with ChronoGrapher, ideally by keeping a note
  • (Optional) Suggest solutions that would satisfy them
  • Be onboard to help test ChronoGrapher again in the future

We aren't interested in "fans" who say "Oh cool mate, interesting project", we want actual developers eager to make ChronoGrapher a better landscape than it currently is

As it goes for documentation, there will be both API docs for the structs, enums, methods... etc. As well as a guidebook that covers all general concepts around ChronoGrapher (it has code snippets for every language supported). You can expect Python, JavaScript/TypeScript and Rust SDKs. There won't be any handholding (unless absolutely needed)

Project’s name:
Anchor Eventline
Project’s description:
Anchor Eventline is a Rust-based helper library for Solana programs built with Anchor.
It provides a structured way to emit, collect, and process program events, making on-chain events easier to index, test, and consume off-chain.
The goal is to improve developer experience around event handling in Anchor-based smart contracts by offering clean abstractions, utilities, and examples.
Project’s link:
https://github.com/fabriziopfannl/anchor-eventline
Why is help needed:
This project is in an early stage and I’m looking to grow it with community feedback and contributions.
Help is needed to:
Improve the API design and ergonomics
Add more examples and documentation
Write tests and edge-case handling
Discuss best practices for event emission and indexing in Anchor/Solana
How can people contribute:
Review the code and suggest improvements
Open issues with ideas or bugs
Submit PRs (docs, tests, refactors, features)
Discuss design decisions and use cases
Rust + Solana + Anchor knowledge is welcome, but motivated learners are also encouraged to jump in.

New Rust Tool: CCC — Cargo Cross‑Check

Hey everyone! I’ve been working on CCC, a tool to make cross-platform cargo check way easier.

What it does:

  • Runs cargo check across multiple targets in parallel (Windows, Linux, macOS, WASM, custom).
  • Aggregates errors/warnings in VS Code’s Problems view with the target clearly labeled.
  • Provides a matrix view for a quick cross-platform overview.

Why it’s useful:
Normally, cargo check only works per target. CCC saves time and helps spot platform-specific issues instantly.

Looking for contributors & feedback!

  • Rust tooling enthusiasts
  • VS Code extension devs
  • Cross-platform Rust builders

Check it out and help improve it: https://github.com/Ranrar/CCC 🦀

Looking for two things in my workflow orchestration project https://github.com/GitBrincie212/ChronoGrapher/. Aiming for high performance, minimal crate size, strong ergonomics and DX and best of the market in terms of flexibility / extensibility.

We ask for the individuals to remain committed and not just abandon out of nowhere without a good reason.

Alpha Testers

Their job is to test the feel of using ChronoGrapher and report back

  • Slightly experienced in Rust (at least ~5 months into Rust)
  • Familar with some workflow orchestration or job scheduling tools (not being an expert, just familar)
  • Strict, descriptive, constructive critiques about the project (API, documentation, ergonomics... etc.)

Contributors

There isn't only one type of contributor but a mix of categories, contributors are not restricted into one category but can be in multiple (just at least in one):

Architectural Partner
This category of contributors is mainly for helping with architecture and provisioning stuff:

  • Quite experienced in Rust (at least 1.5 years)
  • Dedicated to delivering high quality results
  • Can reason about architecture, ergonomics, extensibility, DX and future-proofing design

Technical Writers
This category of contributors mainly writes documentation (either via the guidebook or API docs):

  • Experienced in writing documentation and explaining complex topics easily
  • Have read outside documentation and examined its structure, narration... etc.

Proc-Macro Gurus
This category of contributors mainly focuses on the macro layer of ChronoGrapher:

  • Good experience in writing proceedual macros (attribute, function-like and derive macros)
  • Know how to structure a macro for the best possible ergonomics

I've made some issues for help, more will be coming soon, do let me know if there any questions. You can also chat with the "team" (there are like 3 peps including me actively working)https://discord.com/channels/273534239310479360/1432017649730060348

i've been working on nmrs for the better part of 6 months; it's a set of rust bindings for NetworkManager over D-Bus. the repo also includes a gui that dogfoods nmrs itself.

i'm currently stable, but expanding features vastly, the next one being OpenVPN support

i'm looking for contributors to attack this with me. all vital functionality needed for OpenVPN support has been filed into issues, which are all ready for PR's.

i would attack this myself but between working on other OSS and my day job, it's unfortunately tough to focus all attention on it.

i am aware that i've likely opened myself up to AI slop PR's-- which is honestly fine. i am still going to review every line and simply close PR's that are in no way conducive to the coebase.

the domain isn't too tough to learn, any intermediate-to-experienced rust dev will have no issues implementing some of these features/refactors. but i am open to anyone willing to jump in and learn/ask questions!

thanks, and to the mods, please let me know if i've incorrectly labeled this post or broke any rules. i made sure to read the rules ahead of time so i think this should be fine.
