so i have wanted to dual boot linux and windows on my HP pavilion DV6, i have made a partition for it, made the bootable usb with the windows 10 ISO with woeUSB when i boot the usb tho.. it just said Loading GRUB Welcome to GRUB!
then 30 minutes of nothing the same exact thing
windows needs other way of legacy or UEFI or something? like i need to do it with rufus? could that fix it? or just my PC to old? but it can run windows 10 i know that but why cant it boot?

Your issue likely stems from the fact that the Windows 10 USB created with WoeUSB isn’t booting properly on your HP Pavilion DV6. This can happen due to several common reasons:

  • UEFI vs Legacy Boot Mode: Your laptop’s BIOS might be set to Legacy mode while the USB is made for UEFI, or vice versa. Check BIOS settings and try toggling between Legacy and UEFI boot modes.
  • Partition Scheme & Format: Windows installers typically expect an NTFS formatted USB for Legacy BIOS or FAT32 for UEFI. Verify that WoeUSB formatted the USB correctly for your PC’s boot mode.
  • Secure Boot: Some HP laptops have Secure Boot enabled which can block unsigned OS installers. Try disabling Secure Boot temporarily in BIOS.
  • Corrupt ISO or USB creation: Sometimes the Windows ISO can be corrupted or USB creation with WoeUSB might fail silently. Redownload the ISO from Microsoft and recreate the USB, preferably using known stable tools like Rufus on Windows or Ventoy on Linux.

Your next steps:

  1. Enter BIOS/UEFI settings and disable Secure Boot.
  2. Confirm boot mode (Legacy/UEFI) and match your USB formatting.
  3. Recreate USB with verified tools.
  4. Try booting again.

If the USB still doesn’t boot or shows an error message, providing the exact text or screenshot will help diagnose further.

That usually happens because of a UEFI vs Legacy boot mismatch.
If your BIOS is set to Legacy mode but the USB was created for UEFI, or the other way around, GRUB can just hang like that.
A few things you can do check:
Go into BIOS and see if it's set to UEFI or Legacy.
Make sure Secure Boot is disabled.
If you're installing Window 10, I would recommend creating the USB with Rufus and explicitly choosing the correct partition scheme:

  • GPT for UEFI
  • MBR for Legacy
Older HP laptops like the DV6 can run Eindow 10 fine, so it's probably not the hardware, It's usually just the boot mode mismatch.
Try recreating the USB with Rufus and match it to your BIOS mode. That fixes it most of the time.

just to make sure i understand you
your laptop had linux then you try to install windows
or you had windows then you trying to install linux

#

which linux distro you installing
for example fedora 37+ will need uefi
by the way windows 10 can run on bios or uefi
i had old dv6 which had 2nd generation of i5 cpu and it can run windows fine
