Right so yes, weird question and this is probably not the place to ask for help but I don't know where to ask.
I'm trying to play this old cd-rom game from 2002 that has an installer on the disc, to launch the installer it requires you to download "Java VM" which downloads it just fine, but then when you try to open the installer it says "Executable file cannot be opened, could not load "jvm.dll" and then it says try to install java VM again or change the Java VM used by the program" I'm really stumped and dunno why it's doing it. I tried reinstalling the java from the game's installer but that did nothing I get the same thing. Running in administrator also does nothing. If none of you can help I wish someone could direct me to the right person/place for help.
Sorry for the inconvenience

It seems like you're having trouble running an old CD-ROM game on your computer. While I can try to help you with some general troubleshooting steps, please note that I might not be able to provide specific solutions without more information about the issue you're facing.
Here are a few things you can try:
-
Compatibility mode: Right-click on the game's executable file or shortcut, go to Properties, and look for a compatibility tab. From there, you can try running the game in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows.
-
Update Java: If the game requires Java to run, ensure that you have the latest version installed on your computer. You can download it from the official Java website.
-
Virtual machine: Consider using a virtual machine software like VirtualBox or VMware to create a virtual environment with an older operating system that is compatible with your game.
-
Seek community support: Look for online forums or communities dedicated to retro gaming or troubleshooting old games. These communities often have experienced users who might be able to assist you further.
Remember to provide specific details about any error messages or issues you encounter when seeking help as it will make it easier for others to assist you effectively.
Good luck!
try to find the oldest version of java possible
but i have the one provided by the game installed already
its possible that the ooold java u got is not compatible with ur windows 8/10/11
java is backwards compatible though. perhaps give a bit newer but still old java like java 8 a try
that said, we really need much more detail on the error u get and everything to be able to help
just tell me what to do
he just did
im setting up a virtual machine first
yeah but what other info can I give about the error tho
screenshot the entire process
from which point
show the cd contents, the Java installer, the error message, whatever u installed,...
anything
i dunno this is the installer
this is what it installs
this is the error it gives after pressing install game after installing that java, it's half in finnish but i translated it in the question just says cant open the program cause cant load jvm.dll
I'm gonna try it on a virtual machine first of all and then come back
What game is this?
just curious
finnish version of a game called "Rölli ja Metsänhenki" from 2002
can you right click + open the autorun file with notepad?
I just want to see what is in there
if we can find how the game launches I have some other ideas
I dont think I can
the folders menudata and data have stuff that can tho
open notepad, then file -> open autorun
idk
i'm just hoping there is some bit of code in here that says java --class-path ... Main
this error comes after installing and running the game or while installing
trying to install, it refuses to
yeah lemme go through this vomit of letters
like my old 2002 spongebob game I can run off the CD without installing
(btw, Spongebob squarepants employee of the month is great fun)
kek
java is mentioned 2 times and neither of them are well that
just this and a "i_java.png" in the middle of random stuff
can you show more?
just share the whole file
It sounds like it comes bundled with the java install
which aint bad all things considered
just change the exe lmao
this feels like a fun thing to fix
notepad?
its a huge mess of unreadable crud though
whatever
not to me
share it or you cant expect help lol
unless its random symbols i figure i can read it
it is random symbols
just share it wtf
can only paste it as this lol
I uploaded your attachments as Gist.
ah
well
worth a shot
your best shot is gonna be an emulator regardless
virtual machine?
even if we get past this java issue, there is probably gonna be other things
yeah virtual machine
once we get java running, probably the bundled version of directX wont work on your computer either
yeah probably but now im having problem with it too lol ive made and used virtual machines several times before with no problem and now its giving me blue screens smh
and thats gonna be harder
yup ill try to set up the virtual machine but not today it's late im going to sleep now thank you so much still
right so virtualmachine fixed those problems however now it just says cd not found put the cd in even though I have the iso mounted lol off to the vb discord server I go
