For now I find it kinda nuts that if two objects made of the same clean metal touch each other in space and there's no oxygen between them, they'll simply merge and fuse as if they've been welded instantly

Or that the reason that we find it so hard to encounter alien civilizations is that some of them could actually have existed in the 13-billion year span our milky way has been around, but none could survive the first billion years without running out of resources and dying out

untold sage
#

That’s so sad but so cool at the same time

#

Like all those aliens are just gone because they got welded together?

Bowling ball cores aren't centered or symmetrical. This is due to ball rotation speed, mass, and also hand dominance. Also, the bowling ball isn't smooth. In fact, the ball has tiny (almost microscopic) imperfections in it that help it stay controlled during the roll down the bowling lane

#

Also, the lanes were originally oiled to protect the planks on the lane from damage

the tuberous root of the cassava is widely used in culinary where im from. y'all probably already heard of tapioca, its white bubbly starch, but we also consume it here as farinha, (a coarse flour we add to our açaí), tucupi (sour sauce used in preparing duck and fish), in cooked cubes, etc.

problem is, you'll probably get a cyanide intoxication if you take a bite out of any raw part of the cassava plant, so all recipes have been crafted by our native people to remove the cyanide through trial and error. the maniçoba is a dish that's like a dark stew made out of grated cassava leaves - its good, but you gotta cook them for at least a whole week straight to get the best flavor and make sure you're not gonna die tasting it.

fungi can create whole mini ecosystems from oil spills! lots of fungi have evolved to break down anything carbon-based, and oil is carbon-based. so there was an experiment done where there were 4 oil spills; one left untreated, one treated with enzymes, one treated with bacteria, and one had oyster mushroom spores added. six weeks later, the tarps were lifted, and the other three spills were still really gross, but the fourth had tons of beautiful, robust oyster mushrooms growing. and the mushrooms had released spores, attracting insects, which attracted birds, and there was this whole oasis of life made out of an oil spill. its crazy

Jeff Bezos is worth 200 billion dollars. Elon Musk is worth 261 billion dollars. American billionaires as a whole have seen their wealth rise by over 1,200,000,000,000 since the beginning of the pandemic. They are now worth over 4,600,000,000,000 combined. (1)

The annual cost of chemotherapy for all cancer patients in the United States is 22 billion dollars. (2)

Malaria, a disease that kills 409,000 people globally each year, including 275,000 children each year, could be eradicated in 10 years for an estimated 100 billion dollars. (3)

It would cost 170 billion to lift every single American out of poverty. Yes, some Americans would fall back into poverty after a one time cash infusion, but studies show that a one time cash infusion reinvigorates local economies with lasting effects and allows people to invest in tools that permanently keep them out of poverty (going to school, moving locations to a place with better job opportunities, taking care of a chronic medical issue, etc). (4 + 5)

Over 2.1 billion people around the world do not have access to safe drinking water at home. 892 million people do not have access to toilets, and so have to defecate in the open. Contaminated water kills around 829,000 people every year. It would cost 240 billion dollars to provide everyone in the world with clean drinking water. (6)

the scene where sam and frodo have their argument and frodo tells sam to go home, they filmed elijah wood’s half one day, and were going to do sean astin’s half the next day, but there was a change in the schedule and they didn’t get to his half for like three whole years, so every time the camera switches, there’s actually a huge jump in time

  1. People with amputations can sometimes feel pain and sensations in their limb - this is called phantom limb pain/sensations and can be anything from feeling like there is a bracelet on the amputated arm to feeling the pain of an ingrown toenail
  2. We have an internal biological clock that works even if we are living in isolated areas without daylight, e.g. in a submarine - people trying to adjust to different than 24 hour schedules of wakefulness and sleep usually fail
  3. Children tend to sleep early and wake up early, and adolescents tend to stay up later and also wake up later until they are around 20, then their slowly reverse. This trend of adolescents staying up is present in all cultures and has been also observed in other animals
  4. People recall more memories from their adolescence and early adulthood than any other time period (other than recent memories) - this is called the reminescence bump and might be caused by the amount of major events happening around this time (graduating highschool, college, getting married, getting a first job...)
  5. Alien hand syndrome is a condition in which one of patient's hands performs involuntary movement that are often disturbing (doing something else than what the person wants to) and in some cases without the patient's awareness.
  6. Capgras syndrome is a condition in which people recognize faces of people they know, but they believe that these people were replaced by identically looking impostors
  7. There is a negative correlation between having women in leading roles of companies and performance of the companies - this is likely caused by the fact that women are chosen as leaders more often when the company is already doing not so well
