Power in Pants: An Inquiry
A famous idea: a King still puts on his pants one leg at a time like everyone else. Really? There's nothing else to aspire to in mastering pant mechanics? Everyone who wears pants is, in a sense, equal? And if pants-wearing is something of an equalizer, it seems to naturally follow that there would be a power difference between those who wear pants and those who don't—as embodied by the phrase "who wears the pants in this relationship." Men have historically worn pants, and women have not. Men have historically had power, where women have not. And so in our minds we have often connected power and pants. What is the cause and effect here? If we lived in a matriarchal society, but with the same traditional clothings among genders, would pants simply be considered a sign of lesser power, in a manner analogous to how they've been viewed as symbols of power in our traditional society?
Or is there something...inherently powerful about pants?
The answer...may surprise you.
Perhaps a clue lies in the connection between pants and comedy. Pants is an inherently funny word. Underpants is so much funnier than underwear that the former immediately negates any eroticism implied. David Letterman's production company is called "World Wide Pants." "Bossy Pants" is the title of a Tina Fey book. Bossy shirt, bossy skirt, and bossy hat don't have the same ring. In each of these cases, pants stands in contrast to something serious. It follows worldwide.
Is the silliness of the word an accident of the English language? Hardly. Pantalones in Spanish, is even sillier sounding. All this suggests that pants may not in fact be a symbol of power, but rather, a symbol of humility.
So where are we going with this? Well, this all leads up to a call for change for everyone watching at home. Am I suggesting that by reverse engineering the way we wear pants, that culture could change for the better? No. I'm just saying that the way in which we wear our pants, can perhaps lead to a more prosperous world.
For example:
The way we dress, traditionally, is shirt-down. What does that mean? It means that we pick our outfit based on a shirt first. We have a shirt we like, we plan on a top, we put the top on first, then we try to figure out what we're going to wear below it. And it's part of the problem, to be frank. Wearing your outfits shirt-down sends you to the dead-ends of pants. You're cornering yourself.
These are the days of the past. The 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. It's what's caused our society to degrade. The shirt-down method. But we can turn a new page here today. Tonight, folks, I propose that we enter a new era—the era of the pants-out method. By making pants decisions first, we send circulation of good taste throughout our body. It'll affect what shoes we wear, then what we wear on top. Good pants, make good outfits. And those good outfits trickle out into the world. Into our relationships, work life, and eventually all the way up into government.
