I feel like the main thing Center Mass has going for it, or partly at least, is its relatability and its exploration of a lot of things that we can deeply feel, with a deep personal connection as well. And while that may be true, and relatability is a powerful aspect of music, it's not the most important thing in a song. What's more important to me is if a song has a direct message, something that we can understand and live by, something that helps us move forward in a more tangible way than just feeling a song's lyrics. That's what Holding On To You does, especially in the second verse. Both songs have beauty that shine through and penetrate our souls, but I think the way Holding On To You does this is more powerful.

Both songs feel so deeply vulnerable. Imo...

HOTY feels more action driven especially verse 2 towards the listener. But to me it also feels like it's "the reason why" City Walls happened. The overcompensation of taking the pain, igniting, and tying a noose around your mind and telling it you belong to me, without more self compassion. HOTY is still valid, and I still love Vessel, and it still helps me process a lot of feelings and emotions too. However...

Center Mass feels like I'm getting immersed into another universe while helping me process my own grief, and feels more mature to me (yes, recency bias and also the band is more mature too). It also feels more carefully crafted musically and it feels like I'm witnessing an entire movie in my mind's eye, all the way up to getting punched right in the gut (center mass lol) when the breakdown hits.

For me it was because center mass sure it has powerful and relatable lyrics but hoty is kind of telling more of a direct message and encouragement which i feel is more powerful
Also its kind of subjective in that center mass just doesnt really hit quite as hard for me sometimes
