I have always found Heathens to be incredibly uninteresting; tøp are unbelievably good at exploring complex and nuanced topics, even in more commercial songs made for film and tv (the line is a great example of this). Heathens is a song with a decent instrumental, mostly underwhelming vocal performance (almost no conviction in his voice), very boring melody, and most importantly, when you read the lyrics they have absolutely nothing to offer beyond 'everyone around me is evil oh no'. I've never understood the heathens hype beyond heathens/trees or the transition into next semester in the Clancy live shows

on the other hand, the line does everything right that heathens does wrong. The lyrics are extremely multidimensional, the instrumental is gorgeous, the melody is unique and interesting, and he sounds like he means every word. It's so clearly the line here

it's kind of an essay but this is my full thoughts lol

I have always found Heathens to be incredibly uninteresting; tøp are unbelievably good at exploring complex and nuanced topics, even in more commercial songs made for film and tv (the line is a great example of this). Heathens is a song with a decent instrumental, mostly underwhelming vocal performance (almost no conviction in his voice), very boring melody, and most importantly, when you read the lyrics they have absolutely nothing to offer beyond 'everyone around me is evil oh no'. I've never understood the heathens hype beyond heathens/trees or the transition into next semester in the Clancy live shows

on the other hand, the line does everything right that heathens does wrong. The lyrics are extremely multidimensional, the instrumental is gorgeous, the melody is unique and interesting, and he sounds like he means every word. It's so clearly the line here

My only real issue with AJR music at large, excluding specific instances like Thirsty and Birthday Party, is that it tends to exhibit no sense of subtlety. they have a couple good songs but I generally don't enjoy their studio releases because it comes off very overblown and unnecessarily cinematic
