#Answer here - #127: CLANCY, PRODIGAL SON DONE RUNNING š„
1 messages Ā· Page 2 of 1
This is exactly why I was so disapointed with Clancy. Not because of how it sounded, but because me and my friend were grasping at straws trying to figure out where the lore was š
then again i heard someone say that itās an album talking about clancyās experience as a character, but that also is kinda weak story telling wise. imo vignette is a lore song. thereās something about that screams lore to me (and no, itās not the bird calling lol)
i still dont know where the lore is honestly but i know its there? i just need to really deep dive into it this weekend š
same with routines in the night
itās def there
I can see that
I also weirdly feel like there is lore in At the Risk of Feeling Dumb too, but that is just a feeling with no evidence to back that up lmao
A lore-light album is perfectly fine by me, but when you call it the main character of the storyline there's some pretty strong expectations (can't escape those damn expectations) being established
Yea, I can see that as well
I feel like the "welcome back to trench" line did make me feeling like "yippeee! more dema lore!"
idk
mmm yes
this
if anything this
is what upset me most
from clancy
not that they set it up to sound like trench, they set it up to be TOLD like trench
100%
if you don't mind me putting my tinfoil hat on, I kinda think trench might've been intended as a one-off for lore (with blurryface retconned in for funzies), it took off more than they expected, and tried to stretch the lore over two more albums even tho the vast majority of their song ideas are disconnected from the lore
AND IT WAS A PROPAGANDA ALBUM šš
i lowkey agree with this.
I knowww š šš
esp since ty was able to develop this within that period that he was isolated from social media and had time to just think about something
I also feel like SAI contributed to my expectations as well, like the music video for The Outside for example
like i agree with you heavily but at the same time sai did really well telling the story and iām pretty sure they said themselves it was a three parter
so idk
like
not be on the nose
they should've taken everything lore related from SAI/ Clancy, released it in 2021 as the *true * clancy (with a first/second half based in propaganda vs return), and then released everything else now with the lore behind them (and bounce man cut from the equation entirely :>)
yes exactly
like thereās so much
thatās unanswered
tin foil back on, they had the idea for a propaganda album but only had, like, 3 lore song concepts for it and had to limit themselves to the theme which meant ⨠bad filler all aroundāØ
except when they completely broke their own rules for redecorate and it worked wonderfully
and while you can argue that the whole idea is that fighting against your demons and depressions is this vague battle that sometimes the person themselves doesnāt even understand, it doesnāt solve how clancy is able to seize, why josh wasnāt real, why clancy set up that whole thing in dema. like thereās so much thatās unsolved here
so for it to be deemed āthe endā itās like
šā
double album cope is like a drug
Midwest indigo/vignette/feeling dumb.. cant decide
vignette ON TOP
the sad but probably sensible take: they're making ts up as they go and, just like blurryface, the lore connects from album to album only to the extent they want it to when writing.
technically vessel is considered part of the lore too
i agree with the stretching
I haven't heard why as of yet, if you wouldn't mind enlightening me
iām p sure itās more the ideas in vessel and also how vessels are dead people that can be used for seizing
eh
I mean I guess but that seems more like a clever reference than a full on connection
also it's definitely not what they mean but using the name of your album with your passed grandfathers on it as the term for necromancy in the lore is... interesting
yea
thatās what the album meant though. iām p sure they said in the livestream for vessel that them passing makes the album 10x more meaningful bc of what it stands for. but i understand what you mean. i know ty loved his granddad a lot with two songs now commemorating him and iām sure josh did too
but yea š
i get what you mean
I always thought vessel meant the reverse. The boys are the vessels for what their grandfathers represent and the clash between that and their emotions
Not to be a downer but I'm of the opinion that the boys are much less master storytellers and more "guys who do fun things and make stuff up that sounds dope"
For all the symbolistic problems that overcompensate poses as an opener in my eyes, there is one undeniable truth:
it kicks major ass
but beautifully written. i donāt think heāll ever write that surreal again š
but around vessel it kinda seems like sound became the priority and lyrical impact was a bonus (that they were really good at harnessing)
This rly checks out for me tho
I'm one of the rare "RAB is bad vessel and ST only has 3 good songs" folk around here
At the end of the day I'm a Tame Impala fan at heart: Just make it sound cool, darn it
fair enough
album p fire
And because of this, I do like the album a lot because I have 5 songs (first 3 singles + vignette and navigating) to put on my playlist, which is all I really wanted
Trench has no even mid tracks to me but I still only consistently listen to like 6 of em
for me the only mid on clancy is snap back
Masterpiece, my favorites are Next Semester, Vignette and Navigating
Poor tyler. He only wanted to make music, but he created a world. A lore. And now when he only does music, his fans r disappointed. Isnāt that sad, guys?
Clancy is fucking great. Be happy your boy put out an album that we can listen to
album is very good, better than SAI. Lavish and vignette are my top 2. New album release made me realize itās been at least 9 years since Iāve started listening to them and itās surreal to think that itās been that long already
incredible album. genuinely every song on here slapped, not a single miss. my favourites gotta be overcompensate, vignette, backslide and paladin strait. but there are a lot of insane tracks on here honestly half of the album can be considered favourites for me
AMAZING, i love midwest indigo
Routines in the night š„
Vignette, it's something they have never done before- the disco part reminds me of My Blood though
Yeah this album is pretty awesome. all songs are pretty minty, but I like at the risk of feeling dumb and vignette the most.
Oldies Station is btw actually a nice song, especially the synths in the end and outro
Vignette is such a big favorite for me tbh. Its amazing
top top songs? At The Risk of Feeling Dumb, Midwest Indigo, Navigating & The Craving Jenna's version. Favorite MV's Midwest Indigo and The Craving Jenna's version.
The initial idea of a song that Tyler looks to his audience to prove the songs worth before reimagining it, (referencing Storytellers Performance) seems like it's been done here as a role reversal instead... where he's not needing to prove good songs lyrically or musically and he's just playing creatively with Paul Meany on most of the album to bring forward a myriad of influences as to not tie down twenty one pilots stylistically to any genre. This is why Jenna's version of The Craving is so beautiful, because it stands out as a beacon of beauty above what I would say should be a critically acclaimed album worthy of the highest honors for it's rule breaking.
It's a beautiful bird flip to the critics & the industry.
But honestly i love all the tracks
I agree, the single version is like the "original version" and the Jenna's version is like "accoustic version"
I love when he says :
"And let it flow, let it show, shine
Let it show, let it flow, shine" in Lavish, idk why š
2nd best part after the proctogist line

NAVIGATING FOR ME, but i seriously love all the tracks. NO SKIPS.
an incredible comeback album holy shit
I think you're definitely onto something here. it wasn't just the actual music itself that made trench so great. even if the band dropped an album significantly 'better' than trench, it wouldn't have the same initial perception because it was the hiatus + the leadup to the album, and the grand expectations that they exceeded after their blowup with blurryface
I think the unique strength that clancy has over trench is that here, tyler and the rest of the team is being SO much more open about the process of creating the work, and as they said on the debut stream, they really are just some guys making music
as tyler said, 'I feel more like a dad that makes music [than a musician with three kids]'
LEVEL UP: You are now level 2!
and its this shift in identity that is incredibly apparent throughout the album that makes it feel so much more personal, and I think also makes it resonate with an older audience
The album is def growing on me i agree
Midwest Indigo is by far the best
Vignette
Good
They can open the album with welcome back to trench because they literally go back to DEMA in the overcompensate MV
which was the biggest theme of trench
And they literally start the song with Bandito which is a trench song
not even kidding, best album ive ever heard
I think you mightāve missed the point of that convo, my point was that by directly comparing themselves to trench they set the wrong expectations that we were gonna get a ātrench part 2ā when that not what Clancy is or was meant to be
i'm probably going to get hate for this but it really feels like Tyler wrote half of the album in like 2019 and half of it in 2023 and it just feels too all over the place. I enjoyed it but it just felt too unfocused and all over the place for me to really want to come back to the whole album regularly, which is weird because Ween is one of my favorite bands and all their stuff is all over the place.
Rountines is a great song, probably my favorite on here. Didn't vibe with Lavish.
I 100% feel you on the song vibes being all over the place.
Hot take, maybe. But I really really love the first minute and thirty seconds of Overcompensate. And then... it gear shifts. And it's not like that is bad but that sets a bad tone for me, for the whole album. Because it's not the only song that does that mid-song.
MY FAVORITE IS GOTTA BE NAVIGATING ANG OLDIES STATION
the only song that didnt suit the album is lavish imo
yeah i think lavish just kinda ruined the album listening experience for me. i could barely even pay attention to the final 5 songs because my brain was still wtfing from hearing lavish
i hope the album does well, but judging by the streaming numbers on spotify, which currently are only to 3pm est yesterday, not a single song that wasn't a previously released single cracked 50k streams in the first 15-ish hours of the album being out which... doesn't sound good. maybe when it updates in an hour or so every song will magically have several hundred thousand streams but to only have at most 28k people listen to the album in full on spotify on release day is concerning.
While I respect everyone's very nuanced opinions and stuff, I gotta be honest and say this is absolutely my favorite album of theirs, no question. Every single song clicked with me and I just love it
Do you think part of this is just that YouTube got more traction because of the music videos? Usually when an album releases you see that huge spike in numbers because that's how everyone is listening for the first time, but with this we just had sooooo many music videos and stuff to watch/analyze and sp I think that could've just made the numbers kind of strange
maybe, but if that's true they really shot themselves in the foot with this move then, because youtube views =/= album sales, while enough streams on spotify or apple music can count as album sales
If you are talking about funniest its vignette bc you don't expect it if your talking the best lore one it's navigating
i agree lavish is definitely a big mood change and kinda wtf moment especially lyrically but i'll be honest that the instrumental carries through the theme of the album for me personally, especially with the surges in the strings and such idk that's my take
Gotta say i am so vibing with lavish, i die everytime watching the video it's like what i grew up watching videos of them goofing around back in the vessel era
but "at the risk of feeling dumb" hits so hard with how I've felt lately with some of my friends, I've been going through a really really bad spout of depression and just want to talk to my friends about it but they keep getting upset over it and end up annoyed eventually so i just keep things to myself. idk a lot of the songs on the album hit so hard with how my anxiety and depression has been festering lately and you'd think it'd make me feel worse but it's been kinda helping me process it more. which is why I've loved twenty one pilots for so long, it's just. honestly kinda beena big help with my mental health
i do think tyler setting this up as a visual album with 14 videos was always gonna impact the streaming substantially unfortunately, if you look on their youtbe then at most 330k people have watched the album all the way through on youtube and at most 850k people watched it all the way through as it premiered
which is substantially more than the at most 28k of spotify
tyler did mention on the stream he didnt think theyd be winning any awards
The lavish mv is so good cause I recognize all the locations lol
i might've just been blinded by hate of lavish lol, everything else on the album is pretty good. i felt the same way about trench and smithereens and eventually smithereens grew on me
Yeah it took me until seeing it live to like some of the tracks from Trench
trench was an instant love for me, still has some of my favorite alt vibes to date
LAVISH
I do agree that it feels over the place like some of the songs have a trench feel with the rhythm and rap parts like Overcompensate but then some of the songs have a pop-punk vibe like Next Semester, then some have like a 2010's pop vibe like Routines in the Night. Just feels like they couldn't find out what Genre they wanted this album to be based around. My favorite from this album is probably Overcompensate.
Next Semester will always have a special place in my heart because it came to me in such an specific time, just the right time actually, LOVE IT
In second place comes Lavish, I wouldn't be able to explain why, but I i really really like it
Next Semesterās ending is so great
Do we think weāre getting a delux version of the album?
I can see an EP or like a 30 minute music video for Paladin Straight
After some further relistens I found the best way to listen for me: don't treat it like trench 2, treat it like vessel 2
This is probably the first album since vessel that doesn't have a hammered down theme so going in without the expectation of one really helps
the only thing that continues to bug me is probably bad starts
MI, RITN, and ATROFD all start with a chorus/refrain repeated twice
once to establish the theme is fine but when you do it twice it feels like it's already lost novelty by the time you get to it in full force
I have been convinced that much like with Trench, I should just keep my thoughts on Clancy to myself.
Far too many people ( not here ) assuming when I say itās not clicking with me, that must mean I hate it or I am just not familiar with the band or something.
paladin strait i think will be like a short film
I donāt normally answer these but I guess Iāll share my thoughts about the album,
Clancy for me is a very good but a very strange and somewhat disjointed album. Itās not what I expected, which isnāt necessarily a bad thing, but I do think itās also not really what the band was advertising the album as, but despite that sonically the album still blew me away. This album has some of the best and some of most meaningful and impactful songs by Tyler yet but also doesnāt exactly fulfill itās set up as a concept album and feels like it jumps all over the map. I donāt necessarily hate the idea of a chaotic album but it does make it hard to get as immersed into the sound and vibes as with trench although trench also has some strange tracklist choices, this disjointed nature comes into play more with the second point
This album is incredibly light on direct references to the storyline itās supposed to be concluding, storyline definitely isnāt everything but this has been set up as the continuation to a story this entire time and it feels like they almost entirely abandon the idea of incorporating it directly at all. There are plenty of allegorical connections or parallels with clancys mentale struggles but we get so few references to the story that I donāt think thereās a real narrative over the record itself. Trench has enough direct references in the album itself to piece together that there is a protagonist trapped in a walled city named dema that encourages suicide, the protagonist has joined a group of rebels and escaped out into a place called trench, and this protagonist is in a cyclical loop of escaping and being brought back . With Clancy Iām not sure what the overall direct narrative told through the music that can be pieced together is other that, āI am Clancy and I am confident and going to fight Nico, oh no now Iām not confident anymore and still going to fight Nico and then I get to Nicoā this very vague almost not present storyline makes the musical disjointedness out even more to me
Overall I really enjoyed this project but Iād be lying if I said I felt completely satisfied with this in the same way as trench or if I said it felt like it wrapped up the dema story trilogy in a satisfying manner. It kinda feels like what I expected sai to be or a retry at doing that tour of genres that sai did but trying to improve on it.
Overall probably a 7/10 or an 8/10 which are both very positive ratings in my mind and itās definitely an amazing album thatās topped sai and probably some of their other albums but it doesnāt edge out trench quite yet for me
My opinions might change over time this is still a super recent release but thatās how Iām feeling right now, I wasnāt expecting trench 2 and sonically I love the direction they went in and have no real issues other than the tone changes but I did expect them to at least attempt to tell the story through the music in a substantial way still
Trench 2 or blurryface 2 or sai 2 or just Clancy as itās own separate thing whatever you wanna call this album, itās still a concept album and it just didnāt really execute on half of the concept it established
We know during sai era Tyler talked about how he intentionally didnāt plan out an order for the album track-list beyond good day and redecorate but if you told me this was the album he did not order beyond opener and closer I would believe you
Some of the best music theyāve ever made but a somewhat lukewarm execution as 1 whole cohesive project and concept
Oh yeah last point, I think the fact that most of the fanbase is currently desperately banking on there being a follow up of some sort with an ep or double album is very telling of my point and illustrates what Iām trying to say very well
I would very much agree with you. The fanbase is very strongly behind the idea of a double album. I believe itās more the case that this was a tease of a much fuller concept album to come out next year. But still under the Clancy album title more of an ultimate edition adding the last few songs and really bringing the story to its conclusion
Clancy is my 3rd fav album
- Trench
- Blurryface
- Clancy
- Vessel
- SAI
- RAB
- Self Titled
I'd give it a solid 7.5/10
btw my least favorite song on clancy is probably Snap back or Oldies station
And my favorites are:
- Vignette
- Backslide
- Midwest indigo
- Navigating
- ATROFD
wheres sai
why is self titled last š it's my favorite
oh
idk
i love some songs on ST like IOFB, Fall Away, Trapdoor, Air Catcher and imo those are the only good songs on ST, but everyone has their own opinion...
I wanna meet the āRaB is their best albumā fans, just to get the feel for what they think of the other albums. I legit knew someone back in 2014 who hated vessel and was meh on self titled but loved RaB and we have since lost touch but I am so curious if they kept with the band
what if I told yall all the Clancy songs are my favorite

LEVEL UP: You are now level 9!
Navigating was my listening party/first time listen favorite
Now my current non-single faves are Routines in the Night, Vignette, and At The Risk of Feeling Dumb
The Craving and especially the intro to it is such a tearjerker like I have that fear as well of growing old and realizing that I still dont know much of that person, and this song somewhat being a reply to that.
Paladin Strait is such an interesting closer song to the album I love how I'm interpreting the whole/majority of the song being sung towards Nico and his approach towards him to confront rather than a song about escaping and seeing 'us'. I still cant stop thinking how the MV will actually turn out and I wanna see what they cooked for us to feast our eyes on.
Oldies Station gives me such a hopeful vibe on just living life tbh and man it truly gives me that bit of motivation to "push on through"
Next Semester is and will probably be a consistent favorite single off of this album. I just relate to it so hard on a near-personal level with the struggles of college and the chorus having a simple yet good message of moving forward despite the mishaps to continue and/or start over
One of my favorite moments on the album is the bridge in oldies station. Its looking forward at everything you'll be there for if you choose to keep living. Celebrating the joy that comes with growing older and experiencing those things.
Agreed, Oldies Station bridge is really growing on me too. It's, like . . . Really inspiring?
for ppl going through their 20s and experiencing drastic change, life moving forward, etc. this song just delivers the perfect message
"push on through" because in the end it will be worth it. In the end i think there's a good comparison to be made with this song and Next Semester.
Like they're both the light and dark side of the same coin.
(biased, those are my two favorite songs on the album. but that's probably because they share similar intents)
genuinely -- this album release came right at the time of my college graduation where I'm feeling so so lost about next steps. and I've never NOT been in school. ive been going through it super rough and taking it out on myself a lot but idk the song kinda put things into words and then broke it down like "yes life sucks right now but eventually you will cope and grow even more and start a family you're proud of, this isn't the end of everything"
so today was my first listen following along with the lyrics in front of me. i always like giving listens where i just focus on the sound and what lyrics jump out before following along with the words in front of me later to make more connections. and i was already thinking it, but this just confirms everything for me. anyone who's been through anxiety and/or depression knows the ups and downs that come with it. generally, you're not ALWAYS anxious or depressed (for those of you who are i truly hope you're getting the help you need to not feel that way
). usually it's like a game of ping-pong that goes back and forth between good times and terrible times. to me SAI is that "good day" (ha) you occasionally have that sometimes has outsiders looking in thinking, "oh they're fine, they're so happy, clearly they don't have anxiety or depression" when that's not how mental health works. there's those good days, and then there's these moments that are SO overwhelming with bad thoughts you can't shake, and all you want is someone to be there to hold you and tell you things will be okay. and my god, all the songs on the album hit that thought so hard. to come back so strong from the happier vibes of SAI with such emotional and dark pieces about mental health struggles is just absolutely encapsulating what that struggle is truly like. and to me it has the sound of blurryface+trench but more importantly the lyrics of vessel+self titled. god i love this band ;-;
Sorry this is out of the topic of Clancy but this line, "someone to be there to hold you and tell you things will be okay" is how I feel about Migraine. When I listened to the first half of the song it feels like my feeling is being validated and when enter the bridge part the song trying to tell me that things will be okay ("life has a hopeful undertone"). Because of that, Migraine is my most favourite song, or my "best friend"..
i love lavish its great
LEVEL UP: You are now level 3!
Yep
Oldies station I love her
Vignette is a good song I think
Atrofd underrated
Great album
Iām almost at the point where I can confidently have an opinion on the album. I am always surprised by anyone who can listen to it for less than like a week solid and form theirs lol
i don't like how at the risk of feeling dumb sounds like clown music. the choruses are great though
yeah the intro threw me off at the start, i still kinda laugh a lil whenever i hear it but the rest of the song is bangin
its so great
1: Backslide
2/3: Routines in the night/ Vignette (I cant decide)
4: Overcompensate

9: Paladin Strait
10: The Craving (Single Version)
11: Midwest Indigo

13: Snap Back
14: The Craving (Jenna's Version)
album is a 9.5/10 for me and my 3 favs are Vignette, Backslide and Next Semester but the third fav changes every day š
Same with that one part in Overcompensate the "days feel like the perfect length.."
It is more like vessel, I forget what song it was but one of these songs he said going back to the beginning and I just thought of vessel

delete ATROFD and put it right below Lavish and move everything up and switch Snap Back with Navigating and thats mostly me
Next Semester being that low is insane though
A list I have not seen at all lol:
- SnapBack
- The craving
- Next semester
- Lavish

my fav song is navigating and my fav video is lavish
hmmm
okay on a fourth listen ive come to the conclusion that the album is a solid 7/10
no longer a 6-7
the back part of the album isnt that bad
its just the lack of direction that kills it for me
the craving (jenna's version) is defo my favourite
next semester comes a VERY close second

but you don't know what that means
- Midwest Indigo

ABSOLUTE BANGER TĆP SONGS ARE: ATROFD, Navigating, and Vignette
And of course Routines
yes š
thatās cool you take a listen and deep dive after a couple- i did the same thing. and i absolutely agree. the lyricism of this album is amazing- i thought i was the only one who thought the lyrics felt a lot like self-titled and kinda like vessel. i also felt the album sounded like trench and blurryface, and to me, a bit vessel (like vignette).
those are my favorites too!
Why is everyone ranking Midwest indigo on the lower half is this only a song that the Midwest can relate to??

What did single version ever do to you š
Existed
what do u have against the single version mv?
or backslide?
Heās not feeding the ducks with that bread heās wasting. AND I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT!
As for the single version, there was a build up. Just to shoot a bullet.
lmao
for single version i kinda get that but its the point of the video no
the shell represents the song
the shotgun shooters represent the music industry
they put a ton of effort but no one cares
Yeah I didnāt really like the point. But I felt it couldāve been better. I felt TOP couldāve done more.
Ironically, single version is the only Clancy song I have heard on the radio, and I've heard it multiple times on the alt station they play at my job
same actually
well besides overcompensate
I really thought next semester or maybe Midwest Indigo would be radio songs
my guess was routines but ig not

LEVEL UP: You are now level 9!
Lavish, oldies station, Midwest indigo, at the risk of feeling dumb, navigating for me personally.

My favorites so far are Next Semester and Vignette.
Backslide and the craving
Midwest indigo
Oldies Station and Next Semester
Hallo and welcome
Itās pretty good
Yeah itās good, sad we donāt get any albums until 2027
Not like thereād be a double album or anything
yeah, theres probably only one way we get anything new before then and it would be a double album. Maybe weāll see josh put on a drum show at some festivals though.
theres no way its a double album lol, itād be too rushed and end up garbage⦠plus they probably have to think a lot about the intentions of the lyrics before anything else like another whole album
