||“Clancy” by Twenty One Pilots, album review
First I just want to start by saying I’m not a huge Twenty One Pilots fan. I enjoy their music, but I was given the opportunity to listen to their new album a little bit early and wanted to share my opinion. Not really familiar with the story line that they have so I can’t really speak on that. I’m “technically” not supposed to share what I heard so I’m going to keep my name and occupation anonymous. I’m gonna go track by track to make this easier to read.

Overcompensate: Honestly one of my favorites off this entire album. Production is beautifully done with the suspenseful intro and into that beat switch. A great way to start off this album with one of their better tracks.
Next Semester: I really enjoyed the lyrical content of this track. Juggling some really hard hitting topics. Very strong 2000s vibes. I can imagine this song being very fun in a live setting. I think that the song was a bit on the shorter side and maybe could have strided out some more.
Backslide: The first thing that caught my attention were some of these drum fills. Josh Dun is a star on this one. I do like the faster paced stuff that they do. I wasn’t a huge fan of some of the vocals but lyrically it was okay. I understand the idea of slipping back into bad habits but I feel it could have been addressed differently.
Midwest Indigo: This is a cute one. Really makes you feel like you’re running through grassy hills. Remembering where it is that you come from and the people that were there for you is a really cool thing to see from such a big artist. The same ukulele guitar from the end of “Next Semester” is used in this one and appears several other times in the album.
Routines In The Night: A bit of an interesting change in pace from the previous track, but it flows nicely. Really cool aggressive bass lines with some darker drum patterns. Once again, production is great. Really cool intro that transitions into the chorus. Really liked this one.
Vignette: Very very synthy and gritty. Makes me think of being in a sea of people in New York City and looking for a way out. The sound of this one makes it a standout track on the album. Unlike “The Craving”, I actually really dig the falsetto bits on this one. Very unique track.
The Craving: Sweet love song. I assume it’s for his wife. Ukulele again. Could see this doing well on the radio as a summer hit if they wanted it as a single. Not my favorite but I appreciate the song.
Lavish: Okay, as a hip-hop fan, this is my favorite one on the album. The vocals starting and stopping with the drums was so cool. There were some really great and a little back-handed lines. I don’t think it’s a political track but honestly I couldn’t figure out what the song was entirely about.
Navigating: Honestly, this one wasn’t one of my favorites. Towards the bottom end for me. The bridge was probably the saving grace from this song being one of my least favorite 21P songs. Piano build with drums was cool. But not super memorable.
Snap Back: Super funky track. The main guitar/bass riff was really solid and really helped this song move from verse to chorus. Super catchy chorus as well. Probably in my top 3 or 4 on the record. I honestly think this should’ve been a single instead of “Next Semester”.
Oldies Station: Another catchy one. It does drag a little bit which would probably be my only complaint. Really interesting sound, closest thing I could describe it as is a punky summer beach track. I can already imagine laying out by the water while this one plays.
At The Risk of Feeling Dumb: I dig this one. Kind of a lo-fi pop song. Emotional and optimist at the same time. Definitely one of those to play in your room at night. The final song before we get into the wild finale of this album.||
||Paladin Strait: Whew, this one is something else. I’m pretty sure it was over 6 minutes long but it certainly did not feel like that. Like I said earlier, I know little to nothing about their story line, so there were several words and phrases being thrown around that I’m not familiar with. But sonically, this song is excellent. Piano is absolutely beautiful. I don’t really know what to say other than it really is a grand finale. It is a journey from start to finish. One of the best vocal performances I’ve heard from Tyler Joseph. I don’t know if this is their last album or if they said it is the last, but some of these lyrics feel like it is. I’ve heard a lot of records, but this is probably one of, if not the best closing track to an album I’ve heard.
Final rating: 8.7/10||
