Are you based in Australia or New Zealand?
both if possible
We're not able to sponsor visas. Any Australian or New Zealand citizen with the appropriate experience and skills is welcome to apply
@strong shore Would you be so kind to tell us your experience hiring for the role? approx how many applicants, their quality and did you find someone suitable and anything else interesting? ๐
for the sake of market research in ๐ฆ๐บ ๐ฆ
Who are 'us'?
well, me and the general populous of elixir-lang who might stumble upon this thread.
OK, sure, I'll bite
I had almost 200 applicants. The quality was generally extremely low.
JEEPERS i didnt expect that many
Large numbers of people applied from outside Australia looking for visa sponsorship, despite me being clear that we can't do that
Probably 90% were disqualified due to lack of work rights
In terms of interactions on here and Elixir Slack, I had three suitable people contact me.
I also had dozens of spammers / scammers DM me. That was frankly exhausting
I had several very promising candidates on paper apply who once I got on a call with them turned out to simply have been lying about both their identity, nationality and skills.
For example I was to talking to someone based in Adelaide who know Elixir. He turned out to be in a different country and was answering my questions via ChatGPT or similar
It was, frankly, a horrible experience cutting through the liars and scammers.
But, I did find someone who's starting next week. I wasn't able to find someone who was senior, so hired a mid level person who's gonna do really well I think
I advertised for a junior role last year and had 800 applicants ๐ That was hilarious.
The number of deluded graduates with zero experience asking for $200k+ a year was insane.
well thanks for sharing, it was illuminating.
That's not how you spell exhausting ๐
I'll chime in and say this was a great read! Thank you for asking the question, @zenith summit and thank you @strong shore for the laughs and insights!
