Washed-up revolutionary Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio) exists in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited, self-reliant daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). When his evil nemesis (Sean Penn) resurfaces after 16 years and she goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her, father and daughter both battling the consequences ...
Rs when I saw trailers I thought this looked like an awful movie, it looked like taken or some Jason Statham type of film. Super excited to see this
sounds like there is more to it then meets the eye just viewing of trailers

Bruh Chase Infinit is badddd asf marvel need to snag her for a superhero movie
she kinda looks like the woman who plays Astrid in how to train your dragon
Yeah thisās good
This is PTA's best film. Oscar sweep incoming
Seeing this today
Amazing movie, PTA gonna win an Oscar
Lifetime achievement award? Meh
Wow that was insane
the score was fantastic, story basically felt like it flipped the entire the script of those shitty taken style films on their head
def one of my fave movies of the past decade, ts flew buy⦠the āshortestā 2h 30m film Iāve seen
Did u see yet, if so what did you think?
||The general was a strong, ā abit tragic āantagonist. Dude is torn between his āloveā of Black women and his self-hatred of that fact, driven by a desperate desire to belong to the privileged āChristmasā club. (Think one could also read him as fetishizing Black women). Sean Pennās facial acting was outstanding, especially after the meeting with the club, where he seemed almost mournful. All actors did wonderful job here.||

|| the car chase scene was one of the best scenes I saw in a while
The score was fantastic
Loved everything about the girl that played Leo's daughter
Didn't like the ending much I felt it was too weak for this movie
The movie still had fat that needed to be trimmed in the editing room (specifically the bit that took too long about the pass codes on the phone)
Great movie overall, loved the night scene
Wish Haim was a full time actress ||
||Yeah, the ending did feel abrupt for me. especially in the last 5 minutes. I was surprised they returned to living ānormally,ā unsure if they went back to their original house or assumed new identities (likely the latter).
The passcode-phone scene was one of the more humorous moments, with many things happening around him that advanced the plot/make it tense, making my screening audience laugh.
Car scene near end was so damn creative, got Bourne identity/supremacy vibes||
It was cool to see chainsaw man get highlighted with two trailers to pop of the opening trailersā¦etc

Hitman's Training Day for The Hitman's Bodyguard Press Day
anyways this movie isnt PTAs best
that fellow gotta practice what he preaching
but this is certainly a blast
This movie is gonna flop bad, I didnāt realize its budget was 175 mill š, I got tickets to more viewings to see it again. Barely any people at my location checking ts out.
look at the good side
pta managed to fool warner bros into giving him $200+ mil despite his best selling movie is less than 100 mil
Didnāt Scorsese do something similar with killer of flower moon?
Going to see this tomorrow š
This is best of the year right now
Film of the fucking decade
Iām jealous, I think my theatre I go to only doing this in digital imax not even 70mm
Enjoy !!!
I dont get the hype
would have liked it more if people weren't calling it "film of the decade"
i really love the implementation of those sound devices
Thatās unfortunate š, best not to let others opinions bring down ur enjoyment fr fr. What parts didnāt work to well for yah? Or did it just not meet the expectations that had been set by others praise?
Leo's character was absolutely hilarious. My theater was cracking up. Such a joy to see
Absolutely brilliant film, it won me over because at first I'm thinking it was going to be a political film because of the opening but it was so damn good, PTA is back!
I LOVED THAT MOMENT
"what time is it"
what's also amazing is that despite it's length there is not one wasted moment
If you liked this film check out Inherent Vice, its a much slower burn but has similar humor (though not as funny!)
I mean it was political tho...
Just not too heavy handed or overwhelming like Eddington (which I still like that too)
I agree, the film is so beautifully made and good though I think despite whatever viewpoint you come from your going to enjoy it
I have a feeling Tarantino helped on this one also
scriptwise
I'm just so happy to have a real PTA film that delivers, I was just let down by Licorice Pizza
anyways, the hype is real on this one š
here's why I think the ending was pretty good ||it showed the next generation was going to take over and maybe make society a better place, though you would think they would still be looking for her, maybe they are in hiding somewhere, but they are both happy and that's what counted anyways||
Ari Aster is more self aware of the absurdities of the political duality

Okay honestly though, ||was I the only one that was shocked that Lockjaw survived a shot to his face like that||???
I'm gonna say it...
IT'S THE BEST MOVIE OF 2025!!
no
I was like "Ain't no way!"
I don't think he should've survived
because i didn't think he did and then I also thought the scenes afterwards of him felt unnecessary
I wouldn't say it's heavy handed. Honestly, my main criticisms of it were that Austin Butler and Pedro Pascal were kinda underused and the tone shift I'm a little mixed on and I wished they delve a little more into the conspiracy theory stuff. But I still think Eddington is great. Again, definitely an IMPROVEMENT over Beau is Afraid (2023).
Yeah I knew they were gonna kill him, but I honestly didn't expect him to die from the gas coming from the ventilation.
can't recall if i thought that or not
i liked the chair he was sitting in
i suppose maybe he wanted to be fully sure people knew Lockjaw was dead
A little, when I was watching I thought he took a direct hit, during my rewatch Iām gonna pay more attention to see how that scene was shot, cause it looked like dude ate that⦠which if so is kinda unrealistic.
We see him later get out with shot having missed else his head would have been mush.
I felt that a little but itās kinda a full circle moment for the general he gets everything he wants and his people he was trying to cozy up to still donāt view him as one of them. They cap him off.
it kinda shows the general is like āgriftersā irl
i see
This movie was so awesome. I loved it so much. It was excellent
Definitely my favourite movie of 2025
Sean Penn was just incredible. He made me laugh a lot but when he got angry he would scare me and his walk was hilarious
They were only after them to tie up Lockjawās loose ends before he joins the Christmas club but now heās sorted itās not their problem
The Christmas club ššš
Peacemakers dad would have loved em
This movie is going to be one of the most relevant films of the 2020s. Especially since the orange essentially said to go āfull forceā on the irl āFrench 75ā in Portland. What ever āfull forceā means..
did I miss something? lol
I was thinking that watching it, that it's almost a dangerous film but in a way art can be dangerous
I didnāt know that junglepussy is a rapper. I thought she was just a character name in the movie
š¤£
That car chase scene in the end with that background score and cinematography was so perfect..the tension built on that scene was so amazing
Jesus christ Sean Penn was so good in this
Something so ambitious about making a one lane car chase scene
With reformists like the Paris 75 it will only get worse
I wanted to love this movie I really did
PTA is one of my favorite directors working today
No misses except inherent Vice
WHAT DID I MISS GUYS
For me it felt like the pacing was just unengaging
One big giant act
Will I like it more on rewatch?
This is hailed as the greatest film of the decade!
Iām fucking missing out on something
WHAT IS IT
People are cosplaying through it, it's a great crime comedy, executed better than IV, but it does not touch TWBB/Master those go through the full gambit of emotions
I feel this exact same way
Itās like I feel like outside of certain hardcore film communities the overall consensus is a just a good movie
Theyād never know that this got as much praise as say The fucking Godfather
Give Eddington to PTA, more crisp, then give OBAA to Ari Aster to make it more morally ambiguous
true I loved Eddington
but ending was eh
I had more fun with Eddingtons third act
Than I did here
OBAA better genre movie, but Eddington is more current affairs, for what's that worth
Could have been bumped up to 3rd/4th on my pta list if it had a more heater last 5 mins, like the american movie of the year, Weapons
Fucking banger movie
I donāt know how people donāt like it
The idea of 2 genres coexisting baffle them
Like the main opinions Iāve heard is āitās hilariousā
But they use that as a flaw?
I loved the ending of Eddington shit was ironic, what I didnāt like was that the director said the entire movie was all about the data center
I thought it was widely beloved among review aggregate sites ? Its Metacrtic aggregate score is pretty nuts, itās RT shows that itās more than 90% view it āpositivelyā, itās IMDb is above an 8.0
https://www.metacritic.com/movie/one-battle-after-another/
its user score is a lil low
Washed-up revolutionary Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio) exists in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited, self-reliant daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). When his evil nemesis (Sean Penn) resurfaces after 16 years and she goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her, father and daughter both battling the consequences ...
Oh interesting itās user score on rt is also quite low
Eddington
Very divisive
My theater was howling
at some scenes
especially the f** r**
Oooooo that makes sense, I watched it at home absolutely loved it. So damn good.
I found the movie balanced politics well without being overwhelming or one sided, and it also built up the sheriffās ābreaking badā moment effectively. He is repeatedly bullied and belittled, which I found more valuable of a lesson than the directorās intended focus on the data center. technology will always advance, I appreciated how the townspeople portrayed, and the sheriffās descent into madness felt realistic. Along with the depiction of social media use was quite accurate. Music and cinematography was nice so many shots in that movie looked like they could be a phone/pc background
Also the sheriff killing of his political opponent was quite jarring, quite realistic (not sure if yall seen the footage of that debater that got tagged irl ), but ts looked quite realistic.
I think the ending was bonkers in a good way, though the scene where that one social media obsessed teen shoots the šE-Fa dude who was a little corny. The way the dude gets shot up seemed a lil overdone compared to some of the other Ks
Like 95% of people love it
Another thing that was kinda fire about OBAA is that unlike other films like this like ātakenā or taken like films, is the dude isnāt just going around massacring minorities or people of some other country which a lot of those movies just feel like weird āangerā fantasy film.
in a matter of fact I donāt think Leoās character killed anyone on screen.
also it kinda defies the trope cause even though heās trying to save his daughter she saves herself
Yooo finally!!! How did you like ?
Did you post ur review yet
Not yet i literally just got outta the cinema lol
But its a 5
the musical score for this movie was so good, idk who the composer is but sheeesh that main theme is š§š¾āš³
Iām seeing it again tmrw
That was so stressful and I love it
Watched this and it was a lot of fun. I didn't really feel the length of the movie as well because of the plot and the performances were amazing. I also didn't expect this movie to have some goofy moments like that ||Phone call scene ||. Also, the movie delves into issues that are very relevant politically right now and does it really well imo.
Overall, I thought it was fantastic.
The latest thing I've seen is that if you laugh at the Christmas Adventurers Club bits, that's complicity
Proof something on metacritic in the 65-85 sweet spot, willing to be more divisive, like The Master, keeps you thinking
one thing about PTA is that he's never totally serious, his films have alot of humor in them
Was briefly Talking about Weapons
But yeah I wish I was apart of that 95%
I donāt fucking know why I didnāt love it
I was expecting the TWBB PTA
For me itās like
Itās just a cool blockbuster
Thatās relevant to today
I wish I got the hype
Again maybe I missed something?
yāall gotta help me out :/
It has a 95 on there
Itās an action movie that is less John Wick and more of old classics like French Connection (which was one of the movieās springboard)
Itās great and I think this is probably his most mainstream movie
Tbf the beginning felt weak to me, but it picked up in the middle
yeah I agree
Second acts the strongest for me
I think my problem is the pacing
itās paced like itās just one continuous chase
or whatever
I donāt like that
Theres no highs
itās just consistently tense
again like this is the type of movie I feel it will only be praised by hardcore film enthusiasts
and just enjoyed by normal audiences
The politics are a macguffin, really it's more a critique of the mononormative approach by the right/left to family values and ultimately says, you can't choose your biological family
I think my only issue is with the Christmas Adventures Club like what makes them so special and exclusive besides being an old rich white supremacists club that worship santa, it's not like those secret society like in Eyes Wide Shut where they did some fuck up ritual and have massive influence towards the elite where in this movie I didn't feel any fear or menacing element from this group
One Battle After Another
The score that played when Willow first encounters Lockjaw in the Church was amazing
Scene of the year for me
Anyone who dug OBAA: check out Happyend. Very good, similar pro-revolution themes but in a different context
I had thought the Christmas Adventure club has a large amount of political power/sway in the country. itās implied that in scenes with lockjaw and them. So Iād think the main reasons is money and power.
This may be my top of the year, i know its at least in the 3
Doesnāt the movie end with the father being fine with his daughter being a ārevolutionaryā.. part of his character arc was him going from a revolutionary to wanting to be a parent to then being an āoverprotective parentā to him letting his daughter carry on their political fight.
Dear god⦠Fox made a review of this filmā¦
šš
itās wild I think they entirely missed the mark
*āAs I walked to my car after the nearly three-hour indictment of America, I lit a cigarette and wondered how all these multimillionaires like DiCaprio and Anderson can live with themselves if they truly believe America is as rank and horrible as the film depicts.
How can all those actors at the Emmy Awards who yell "F--- ICE!" like ignorant toddlers reconcile that the same government is what protects their fabulous lifestyles of the rich and famous?ā*
*āāOne Battleā starts with a mass political violence campaign from Perfidiaās group, called French 75, in about 2010, with the rest of the movie taking place in the present day. The idea that the federal government was engaged in racist fascism in Obamaās first term just feels absurd.
For this movie to make any sense at all, one has to believe the United States, today, right now, is a fascist dictatorship. That is not only a dangerous fallacy but, as we have found out recently, a deadly one.ā*
š¤¦š¾āāļøš¤¦š¾āāļøš¤¦š¾āāļøš¤¦š¾āāļø
Did the film even give us explicit years for the time jump that occurs between act 1 and 2?
They didnt no
This mf think the rebellion in StarWars would be the ābad guysā
Also ew fox
it shouldnāt be this hard to see that the ārevolutionariesā are more nuanced, while they technically are āt-ristsā, one has to scrutinize their cause other than just say they are pure evilā¦
shoot we could go back to the inception of the United States and call those that rebelled against England to form the untied States āterroristsā
āsubjects of the Crown rebelling against lawful authority
Right so the criticism of 2010 things donāt even make any sense š.
Whatās stupid is that due to them making that review, if someone queries āwhat year does one battle after another take place inā, Google shit ai summary shows 2010, then if one selects the link itās referring it references 3 and one being that fox reviewā¦ š¤¦š¾āāļøš¤¦š¾āāļøš¤¦š¾āāļø which boldly claims it to take place in 2010 which is misinformation
https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/one-battle-after-another-movie-review-2025
https://www.wmagazine.com/culture/one-battle-after-another-trailer-release-date-cast
the third is that review from Fox
I wouldnāt be surprised if Vince McMahon was an inspiration for Sean Pennās performance
i thought it was 2018 or 2019 purely going off the music they were playing from the dance
although that might be too on the nose
He was the highlight for me
I donāt even think this movie necessarily glorifies political violenve at all
Also this dilm obviously takes place in a slightly alternate, slightly exaggerated version of reality
Its not saying āthis is exactly how America currently isā itās saying āthis is very close to how it is and how it very soon may beā
"exaggerated"
Ever so slightly
Anyway I donāt even 100% agree with this movieās political stance but I very heavily respect it
||The U.S. is honestly worse than this film depicts, undocumented people disappearing, prisoners silenced, all under the banner of āChristian values.ā That hypocrisy is what fascinates me.
Take the general: he shows sorrow at the thought of killing his ādaughterā during the Christmas club scene where he wants to become one of them, yet contradicts himself by pursuing the very role of a Christmas adventurer while claiming to have loved Profidia. This reminds me of some that preach and our against gays within a party but themselves are closeted.
The revolution itself isnāt glorified. The first act already shows the toll Profdiaās recklessness while pregnant, noticed by Deandra and Bob. Still, Profidia isnāt just a faceless neglectful parent; her choices show nuance beyond simple labels she prioritizes her own revolution over her family kinda like lockjaw does to his own kid. But also still cares for her via the letter and the discussions we here behind the door when Bob is listening to her have a breakdown in act 1||
Is that imax screening?
Same, seemed like the past few years given the sound track in highschool.
Something didnāt realize on my first watch through that became a little more clear on second is that the hitman went after Avanti car because he assumed Avanti was in it. Dude was going to cap Avanti.. so Avanti prob helped the Willa escape cause he realized he was next while seeing the other militia members enter that house.
My dad who typically has an āanti wokeā but not necessarily conservative opinion on most things had some interesting takes
Wheras with most movies heāll complain about black characters being ātoo perfectā he actually thought perfidia was in a sense too flawed, like it was out of character for her to be a rat
And honestly I agree
He also took issue with the small scene of the Molotov cocktail guy suggesting the idea that the police plant people in protest groups to incite violence
Oh bet, that does make sense I doubt police would directly do or do it to begin with.
However the film actually lines up with what the president just(yesterday or today) claimed on Truth Socialāthat the FBI planted 274 agents in the Jan. 6 crowd to stir chaos⦠and ofc the orange overlord cannot be wrong š.
But the film also plays into the belief by both right and left that fbi, military conduct false flag operations to incites riots and or other things etc.
the thing is in the film lockjaw is doing a false flag operation to nab illegals in that chicken factory thing, which itself is a guise for him to nab his suspected daughter.
There is a historical precedent(s) for public fear on this⦠itās not some conspiracy. There is well documented cases of the United States doing this via: COINTELPRO (1950sā1970s),
1968 Democratic National Convention, Environmental & activist infiltration (1970sā2000s), Operation Northwoods (1962ā this was proposed but not actually executed), Gulf of Tonkin Incident (1964)
In the movie, though, it isnāt local police but the military guy, Lockjaw, who brings in unmarked contractors to incite violence.
As for Perfidia, I thought her being a rat did fit what we saw in Act 1. Sheās selfish and revolutionary, she is deeply flawed. Even while pregnant she put the movement above family which seemed to worry her friends and her boyfriend, hid her relationship with Lockjaw, and kept it going willingly. Snitching on her crew felt like an extension of that self-preservation instinctāthough she couldnāt really live with it and eventually bailed. There is also a question did she love lockjaw I think itās easy to write it off as her obviously not liking the fellow but she enjoyed the power she had over the fellow.
Even in the heist she crosses another line by killing someone, which seemed to shock Jungle-Pussy, as if the group hadnāt gone that far before.
Oh fuck me I shouldve stopped the political talk earlier
Sorry that is 1000% my bad
We just cant talk politics like this in this server
I apologize
my bad, tho itās hard to discuss this film w/o politics aināt they interwound with the themes of the film š
Oh interesting insight about the first thing. I do feel though, like Perfidia was established to put her priority for the movement OVER her family which makes it strange that she would abandon the movement so easily. I totally get your point though.
I hrt that but also we shouldnt be bringing IRL political stuff into it i feel
Just our general regulations and I shouldve spoken up sooner
Either way itās a small nitpick
My apologies, again
Hmm. I feel like both this and the Eddington channel might have to be a bit more lenient just because of how directly they address current political points.
I cant currently allow that
Right thatās what gets me, she chooses to still engage with the general. I assume they gw eachother more of screen?
But I can bring it up to the team
Maybe not though. Theres still a ton to talk about in other parts of this movie
The issue is that it qill get ugly in here very fast
If we bring up real politics ever again
Would def think itās worth mentioning fr fr, Eddington and this are interwound in it. There are technical film making aspects to the film, but even the conversation of parenthood in this film can go down that path.
I loved how Pynchon-esque parts of this movie were. Like, the scene with Lockjawās boner and the one where Bob was crawling through the gassed up tunnel felt straight out of Gravityās Rainbow
Iāve not seen either of those
they on streaming?
I wish theyād have given lockjaw a smaller dick lmao bro was packing
I mean those scenes remind me of the writing if Thomas Pynchon who wrote Gravityās Rainbow
not to mention bro didnāt skip arm day š, no wonder his arms were so big
Bursting right out of that tight shirt
Lmao when he asked if Willa was insinuating if he was gay
Hope to look that good when Iām what ever age he is
He needs to win a best supporting actor oscar. I genuinely think his performance is an all time villain performance
Heās up there with heath ledger joker for me, and homelander casting. The villain performance is iconic, itās such a shame that general public aināt going out to see this
Also kinda hot take but Iād love for Regina Hall to win a best supporting actress oscar but it will probably go to either Chase Infiniti or Teyana Taylor who honestly both really deserve it
chase infinite was mad impressive, tbh she looks so much like Nico Parker
hope this movie does decent at box office
The one nonbinary friend ratting her out feels a teeny bit suspect tbh
I hope word of mouth, political relevance, and social media will help
Oh yeah, was surprised any of her friends would rat her out, having her Trans friend do it was interesting choice, but also itās valid. Itās one of those things where irrespective of gender or race a character can be a dumbass š. And her friend who snitched her out was a dumbass
Plus very likely oscar presence could get this re released
She was fantastic and it is her first movie role I believe, I saw her in Presumed innocent TV show and she was great there too
Yeah, also all her friends kinda seemed like dumbasses lol
Oh bet, ima have to give ts a watch. I hope they should snag her for an MCU movie. Was hoping theyād do Nico Parker but Iām guessing sheāll be busy with HTTYD LA sequels
Oh
That poor Latino kid was going through it š¤£
Leo intimidating Bludo was hilarious
He looked mad familiar did the kid star in āAmerican crimeā tv series ?
American Crime is an American anthology crime drama television series created by John Ridley that aired on ABC from March 5, 2015, to April 30, 2017. The first season centers on race, class, and gender politics as it follows the lives of the participants in a trial who are forever changed during the legal process.
The series follows an anthology...
Also I thought the hispanic representation was great. The skateboarding guys are people I have totally met and Benecio Del Toroās household captured the vibe of every hispanic household ive ever been in so well
Totally
Thatās the point no? They act like they are special because they are rich and has control over the military
I think making them like from Eyes Wide Shut would undervalue the seriousness of these white supremacist groups
I think Tony goldwynās character was also very intimidating
He was so good at being a āfriendlyā white guy who turns out to be a racist terminator
I think he was pretty underused
Whoās the guy that initially talks to lockjaw, I think itās the dude who daughter had a bday party?
first time he meets the xmas adventure club
NGL the performance that took me the most was that of Chase. She's a genuine star in the making hopefully.
But ye Penn nailed his role so hard.
Best new scene I watched in a long long while
Chase was really good and basically the main character
But yeah I couldnāt stop thinking of Sean after seeing it
Ive seen other complaints on tt of people saying its Hollywood casting light skin again for a role that could have gone to some one darkā¦
I think part of the point is lockjaw having hooking up with the general is more of a power play that makes her feel powerful.
Take this last comment it says the black characters serve to prop up the white male character⦠did they watch the movie Bob is a messā¦. An absolute mess
This is the exact opposite of Fox News review where they said they demonized all the white characters and made the one white protagonist uselessā¦
This movie breaks from white savior trope⦠idk how that commenter says that⦠Willa saves herself⦠maybe there complaint is they had a white man be the rocket man
Thatās also a issue with being mixed, you get attacked by white folks and black folks for different reasons š
Using Leo Decaprinotolderthantwentyfive-o as the antifa revolutionary was certainly a choice based on who Leo portends to be in real life
I think the way the character is written plays to strengths that Leo has as an actor thus why Leo was chosen plays to his chaotic tendencies but also comedic. Iād be curious to hear why director chose each actor/actress.
in act 1 Leo is much more coherent and intelligent he understand basic circuit designā¦etc as heās able to craft āweaponsā for the movement because heās not abusing drugs⦠itās a quite the big plot point in the film, heās bumbling around while his daughter gets nabbed, he canāt remember his passwordsā¦etc. his drug use serves to be a coping mechanism for the life heās lived and had to abandon.
no im saying in that leo is giant hypocrite
he claims to be for the planet
and does the opposite
your points are succinct
š I mean he is an actor, when we have actors that are the way they act in films we get folks like johnthan majors š„²
ugh dammit
other than that
Infinite was the most compelling in this after Sean Penn (who also sucks lol)
so hopefully she comes out on top
Oh whatās up with Sean penn? This is the first movie Iāve seen that has him in it
love this movie fr
he keeps beating people
Oh it seems like he was lashing out at photographers or paparazzi?
That seems to be the bulk of his cases. Then there was some accusations that Penn abused Madonna which Madonna shot down in court and Daniels even apologized and settled with Penn. (ofc just because he won doesnāt mean it didnāt happen vice versa is true)
Him lashing out at photographers/ paparazzi is a little more nuanced I could understand why someone might get that angry when being harassed by other people⦠especially if he was provoked. Still no reason to loose your cool but Iām firm believer of play stupid games win stupid prizes.
Then there were two where he fought an extra and a musician? Those seem outa pocket and messed up.
But seems like a lot of those incidents stem from pre 2000s.
Since then doesnāt seem like there has been documented proof that he continues to beat people. (I mean there was 2009 incident where he kicked a paparazzi but letās be real a subset of the paparazzi are trash.. they harass people) that entire system encourages violating others privacy, invasiveness⦠they def operate in a grey zone from my pov.
yk I just realized paparazzi are kinda like professional rage baiters
ššš
Paparazzi are scum
Who cares if he yells at them
Like genuinely nobody should give a fuck
Paparazzi are bottom feeders
Not just a subset
All of them
I think the issue is from law pov he āassaultā. As shit as paparazzi is still no reason to strike back āassaultāā¦etc but itās one of those things where people hold celebs to an unrealistic standard
If a normal person is thrust into that type of position theyād crack, loads of pressure⦠being stalked and having photos taken of them w/o their consentā¦etc
Iām not seeing it, I donāt get it. Perfidia is much more nuanced then this
I think there is more non verbal acting going on with her character like during the encounter with Lockjaw after she leaves the bathroom and meets up with āBobā. also sheās a woman that is prob having some form of postpartumā¦
āSurely a more plausible explanation would have been that her commitment to the cause made it necessary to put the revolution firstā
She is selfish sure but that doesnāt make her awful, she chooses the revolution over her family
but also is willing to rat to save herself
she wasnt one to be tied down, not by love, children, govt, others, or even a cause, she was always out for herself
āBut no, Anderson went for extreme horniness instead. This is a choice. Just like it was a choice to name another of his Black female revolutionary characters āJunglepussyā, a sexualised spin on the old racist slur ājungle bunnyā. Or to have Perfidia express her principled defiance of the fascistic state with the phrase āthis pussy donāt pop for youāā
like this misses the mark, she said this pussy donāt pop for you because the relationship between Lockjaw and her was only sexual?
from her pov
or maybe it was power dynamic, she has power over her someone she views as an opperesor.
movie feels like it came crashing in from the 80s but with a different story
the way it was shot, the music
the night scene with the skaters
the final battle in a desolate highway
bro towards the end of movie I stg there is a track that sounds like itās ripped from the wizard of oz, itās like this piano tune, that sounds like miss gulch theme
this one
Itās before the car chase scene
well before it
I feel like this movie is how "Honey, Don't" wanted to feel but didnt nail it like this
I havenāt seen that yet
is that the one with Aubrey Plaza š
and Qualley
āSorry to complicate your enjoyment of your new favourite film. I know pointing this out risks upsetting those Letterboxd loyalists who can brook no challenge whatsoever to their favourite film-maker. To them I say: please donāt worry yourselves unduly about Andersonās feelings. Heās a big boy. I promise you; he can take it.ā
āāDo you like Black girls? I love them.ā This is intended to demonstrate the characterās repellence, but would be much more effective as such, if we hadnāt just seen lovable Bob describe his attraction to Perfidia in pretty much the same terms, moments earlier.ā
Idk but there is a big difference I think the film is trying to highlight and thatās with how someone like Lockjaw views black women vs Bobā¦
There is a scene in the car with Bob where Bob vents to Sergio, about not being able to do Willaās hairā¦etc clearly things meant to show the shortcomings he feels he has as a father of a black girl. At the begging of the film both Lockjaw and Bob say they like blackwomen⦠I think there is this difference between authenticity between them. Bob is a parent someone that genuinely cares about prefidia, Willa,ā¦etc.
Lockjaw contrasts this beautifully⦠someone that loves prefidia due to their power dynamic and also he has some degree of respect for herā at the same time he goes against those feelings by supporting a white supremcist organization .
"I have nothing nice to say"
I standby that this was a new-retro of Blacksploitation films
sexy black woman banging to get what she needs and leaves
"junglepussy"
comedic white supremacists
instead of this time it isnt about fighting for "civil rights" or "black power"
but the "revolucion" and thereof of underground networks to take down supremacy
think to "The Warriors" movie
Iād argue itās not, because she isnāt just banging to get what she needs she is engaging in a means to survive and keep her movement going⦠she is initially forced into meeting him at that hotel. If she didnāt show up, there is a chance heād have narcd.
There first encounter between them I think her asking him to get hard wasnāt meant to be sexual. But meant to be humiliating the general. The issue is she didnāt expect the general to be into BDSM and during that scene there is no way sheād have known the general would become obsessed with her.
the general then stalks her movements and strategically waits to abuse his power over her forcing her into that situation.
you could maybe even make the argument prefidia was raped, because while she may not wanted to have done it⦠she was forced to meet the general else he could have harmed her. Thatās why I donāt see it as sexy black woman banging to get what she needs.
the folks in the Christmas adventure club donāt seem like bad people off rip till hearing there dog whistles and seeing their actions. I think thatās the intent because modern racism in America has changed. Thats one part of the film it does well, the āoppressorsā arenāt the explicitly racist stereotypes they are the behind closed doors type
they literally killed the guy for having interracial sex and an interracial child, who he was told to kill
she was into the humiliation, the facial movements and reactions indicate that bit , but i might be looking too far
I think so too, she enjoys having power over someone who she hates.
wont argue that in consequence, yes she was raped, and heavy coercion
"prison or sex with me"
she didnāt strike me as someone that loved the general.
both a prison
not at all
prefidia didnt love at all
if anything she loved the struggle
Yup that is evidenced by the letter at the end
didnt want love from someone, a child, a family
but understood that her daughter was a person
I think in retrospect she realizes that via that letter which we get
sans the letter
yea BUT DID SHE COME BACK? no
fuck a letter
She canāt š, sheās classified french75. If anything her dna gets registered anywhere sheād be screwed.
they faked the story she died
but that would be mad risky
What I was saying there is off rip when the audience are introduced to them they donāt say anything straight away that screams evil. There mannerisms are all politeā¦etc. itās once they start using dog whistles and their other actions that is when the audience should know these are ābadā folks. Thatās what I mean by behind closed doors racsim, (this is generalization) those type of folks are to smart to let themselves be caught saying something in public) hence why at the end of the film none of them get got
praising christmas is inherently evil

Time for a third watch
I assumed the whole Christmas bit is racist dog whistle cause of the whole,
āWhite Christmasā song irl⦠tbh this movie could unfortunately give racists ideas of new dog whistles to use
She was great
I was a bit iffy on her in her first few scenes but she was amazing
I also think she had great chemistry with the entire cast
Especially Regina Hall and Sean Penn
Even a OBAA skeptic like myself:
Diagnosis with me with Zero Fucks Given cause i give zero fucks about the private life of creators unless they are actual felons
Yall think vod is Tue, Oct 28 through Tue, Nov 11, 2025. ?
So into the wild is an invalid movie? What is your point
You have become such a sweat that you one day won't be able to enjoy anything & that's what I've been warning against ppl in here becoming
I dislike Leo and I DEFINITELY dislike Penn but their performances were amazing
I also, personally donāt like Paul Thomas Anderson much from my personal experiences with him but hes an AMAZING director
Same goes for Woody Allen imo
You must be trolling
The car chase scene was almost perfect except for one way too shaky shot that lasted way too long
There could honestly be a sequel
Theres so much room with Perfidia and the Christmas Adventure Gang storylines
absolutely
after the car chase I thought there was still another hour or so left on my first watch.
Me internal clock was thrown out of whack.
Though I am happy if itās one and done.
Sequel brain
i liked OBAA & definitely had some good funny humour but most of the time i thought Leoās character would do something heroic but ends up just being in panic mode and being a fuck-up and just being a dad. Sean Pennāa character though š¬š¬ weird sicko fr.
The moment we see that Perfidia was pregnant, i already assumed it wasnāt Bobās. Idk if it was meant to be revealed later on but that was pretty predictable
Was this movie a practical joke
You didnāt like?
I feel so conflicted. I need to sit on this for a while

In a matter of fact this movie is technically a flop
I think itās budget is reported to be 135-170 mil, rn itās at 45mil
It is the #1 movie this week
So good
Sean Penn was the highlight, truly deranged and one of the best villain roles Iāve seen in a while

I want to see this film again so bad
Itās so long but by the end I wished it kept on going
I hope thereās some wacky directors cut thatās closing in on 4 hours
Would be a dream come true
Iām prob gonna go a third time to see in imax. I havenāt done this since dune part 2
š might gotta go a 4th im gonna see if i can find a 70mm imax version of it within 2-3 hr drive
Man what a trip
Not enough people talking about the integration of the sound of the trust devices
Absolutely beautiful
Itās expertly shown to audience as well at end of act1. beautifully shown and then we get that full circle moment with it near the end. š§š¾āš³
This is great. Just for the fact that I enjoyed watching Leo's character, a post revolutionary extremist go about his life after all the exciting part is over. He's living on the lam, raising a girl and forgetting his passwords. Very real life stuff that'd come afterwards
Movie is so peak
Gonna see it again this week
That moment when bob is walking up to willa and you hear the melody which heās been waiting to hear the entire saga heās been through to find her again
man that password sequence and payoff
so fkkin good
"What time is it?"
Im really curious what Critical Drinker is gonna think of this
Easy answer is heāll hate it cause of the message but thereās also a lot in this movie that heās been wanting. Well directed action, female/black characters that are flawed and well written
Then again if he says he likes it, his viewers may crucify him
Whatever gives him the most clicks
That is so true!!
I thought he was gonna trash on sinners to be different but he loved that. Yellowflash2 was dunking on this but he just focused on box office⦠he avoided the plot, messageā¦etc
We really dont need to talk about that guy lol why do we not just ignore his ass
Because people think it glorifies guerilla violence but in reality it is quite balanced in that it shows that their struggles donāt really succeed in the end. Nobody is really a pure hero in this film, you just have characters you can vibe with and then you have Sean Penn
I found the initial bit the weakest part but it was definitely needed to set the tone before the time jump where it all kicks off and doesnāt stop at all
Iāve never been so barraged by a constant flurry of things happening in quick succession in a while
my partner says we shouldnt have even gotten the opening scenes
skip straight to post-revolutionary Bob
leave his past that much more murky/interesting
show dont tell mentality
Isnāt that the point of act 1
show donāt tell
correct thats what he went with
What I liked about act 1 is it sows the seeds that are resolved in act 3- or expanded upon in act2. Whether thatās the satisfying reunion using the devices that Bob and Willa use, the deeper motivations for Willaās mother, lockjawās motivations, who Bob was as a person. If we pick up in act 2 w/o the first part of film. I think we loose something for those characters, even people like Regina Halls character.
if they didnt do the whole first part, and just pop strright to bob/willa and dont give exact "tell dont show" and just have the Major chasing them for their crimes and his daughter as co-conspirator
to then reveal it was actual a hunt for his daughter
The first part has some of the most interesting nuance with Perfidia and lockjaw, even the relationship between Bob and Perfidia. And Bob role as a father.
maybe thats too convaluted but i think the reveal that he had relations with Perfidia would be much more compelling
I do like the slow burn that we got
and PTA isnt a "big reveal" kind of guy imo
We do get that though, I think for some it may not be obvious that lockjaw is the dad.
After having watched many films itās easier to pick upon stuff like that. We go from a scene where perfidia is meeting with the general and then having sex. Directly to the next scene of Perfidia firing of an lmg while pregnant. the dots are there to connect but they can also be missed. Because that scene alone doesnāt mean that she gets pregnant by the general, it throws in a possibility that she did by either him or Bob. Itās then further hinted early in act 2 w/meeting between him and xmas adventurer club. The reveal is expertly done by another show donāt tell moment w/the dna test in act2
Act 1 shows us the history of these characters. not really tells (my understanding is show donāt tell is for displaying events rather than an event being done via exposition). Iād think w/o act 1 we loose the dimension of perfidia, for more of an emphasis on the story being a mystery w/o act 1.
There is small scenes in act 1, eg after the bathroom encounter w/general there is some amazing facial acting to convey that perfidia is trying to maintain her composure after meeting up w/Bob again. Or in her bedroom months or so after giving birth that show sheās having āissuesā aside from being impulsive. W/o act 1 we loose much of Perfidia as a more grounded imperfect revolutionary. I think w/o that people run the risk of having this romanticized idea of perfect revolutionaries. Irl they never like that.
We go straight into act 2 then 3 w/o act 1. We get more of a ver of film where it may be easier to be biased to be more sympathetic to the revolutionaries.
yea thats the linear path that PTA decided to take which, like we agree is still a great film
i think if i wanted my version the scenes with the xmas adventure club would have to be even more ambiguous with their racism and instead of their direct dislike of his stepping out of his race instead, to solve his problem
and honestly now that im typing it out, it makes sense im not a screenwriter
cause it really couldnt play out any different
the exposition didnt need to be all in act 1, but its fine that it was no, gripe their
ill leave it with this
Benicio character needs his own film
Sensei being chill moving everyone out of his house while Bob scrambles for answers on the phone was so funny
Right but act 1 gives us dramatic exposition for the character backgrounds. act 2 gives us dramatic and direct exposition for the characters present day before delving into much of the action.
Id argue act 1 is a master class in delivering story details w/o crazy amount of direct exposition. The way the exposition appears to be done is via dramatic exposition. Act 2 also has dramatic exposition. The exposition in act 1, 2 blends into the char actions, conflicts.
So for example in the beginning part of the movie we see perfidia circling an encampment w/o being told itās an immigration encampment. We are shown before being told that itās immigrants in the encampment.
we are shown via āimplicationsā before told that there is something between Bob and Perfidia. In the very first scene of them together she keeps glancing at him, he glances back. We are shown that the French75 has āsomewhatā successful career before, Perfidia becomes more reckless during her heists near end of act 1. We see Perfidias recklessness before itās mentioned between Bob and Regina Halls character. We are shown that the lockjaw has obsessive tendencies and is obsessed, not told.
Act 2 does something similar we get shown things and relationships first before being told
When I think of something that is direct exposition heavy, I think eternals, many relationships and events are told to audience then shown. We have an intro in the film that shotguns the viewer information to know, we get told the origins of celestial, and otherā¦etc.
That is great idea, what do you think the plot would be?
maybe more focus on the āunderground railroadā aspect of bringing folks across border?
just expanded which is probably why works as such a unique side character
Accidentally told my conservative relative to watch this film and I got lectured for 10 minutes afterwards
Good movie tho
He also said he found it unrealistic that Lockjaw survived the assassination attempt and I had to remind him that this was directed by the same guy who made frogs fall from the sky in Magnolia
Him getting shot in the face is jarring at first till one remembers irl there are survivors of shot gun blasts to the face at much worse ranges. Not to mention folks that have been impaled with rebar to head surviving miraculouslyā¦etc.
they key here is lockjaw did not take a full shot gun blast to the face.
the idea is the blast missed his face and nicked his cheek / and part of his face. If it had been a direct hit bros head woulda been in much worse condition.
The way the scene occurs when dude pulled up in other car made it look like he took the blast to the head but itās never actually shown. after car crashes and Bob checks inside his head isnāt nearly as damaged as it would have been if heād have took the full shot to the face, so thatās another clue dude didnāt take a direct hit.
I'm embarassed to admit I watch the critical drinker. Agreed with him when he was attacking the MCU failures. But outside of that he's been very predictable and careful about what he's saying. Sinners was a good example of a movie he give a mild grudging good review for but probably would've totally attacked it if it failed at the box office.
I personally felt the movie could've used more backstory on the radical group. The action fan in me says no, but I'm curious about the french75 group and got questions. Found out that it was based on the vindland book, but the adaptation changed a lot of the characters. On the other hand if they delved deeper into the French 75 and went into their ideology and deicision making process, then it'd irk a lot of people and not be that interesting. Still I'm wondering besides immigration and abortion, what did they support and not support. Dangerous to get more specific and spicy.
I rewatched it tonight. One of the ideas that struck me is that radical groups will inevitably always end up with complicated infighting because of the flat power structure. The alternative to that is the top down hierarchy like the military lockjaw represents.
Yea, I picked up on the possibility of Willa being Lockjaws child immediately when they transitioned to her pregnant automatic weapon firing. It's probably a skill you get from watching a lot of movies
I think that pattern is echoed not just with radical groups but large political party groups in general as well.
Itās one of the open ended problems. Idk if there exists a truly optimal group hierarchy
Yea, there's no one perfect structure. With all the advantages of top down military, eventually disagreements are going to arise. Within the group if they get too big/powerful and people seek their own ambition/advancement. But also within individuals themselves. We often wrestle with conflicting ideas, people are not robots taking order all the time.

Iām still baffled at how they did Leo falling and getting tased and made it look like a oner. Probably some crazy cut work
Maybe they got the double to mimick Leoās positioning exactly
Maybe they did in one take? What if they actually used a real taser lol
But when you see him, itās clearly Leo. They must have done some crazy lining up work to get it to smoothly move between him and stunt double

I thought both these reviews off a decent explanation, that review echoes others Iāve seen on TT from some folks, I feel they miss key points.
To me, the film gave us some of the best written Black characters in a whileāespecially Perfidia.
Letās counter the ālingering shotā The lingering shot, for instance, is from Lockjawās POV, meant to make the audience uncomfortable.
Characters like Willa, Perfidia, Regina Hallās role had just as much or more narrative depth than Bob. Act I balances Bob and Perfidia, while Acts IIāIII expand to include Lockjaw. Bob mostly serves as comic relief, with his arc centered on his failures as a father to his biracial daughter and getting over his paranoia. Yet, despite his shortcomings, he does love and care for the women in his life particularly his daughter.
Lockjaw, by contrast, is deeply conflictedāhe sexualizes Perfidia while claiming to ārespectā her, and even chooses the Christmas Adventure Club over his own daughter, paralleling Perfidia choosing revolution over family. But Perfidiaās choices are rooted in traumaārape, postpartum struggles, a botched heist, and betrayal for survivalāwhich makes her one of the most raw, complex portrayals of a Black woman weāve gotten in the past few years from film. Her letter brings closure with her family, and her daughter takes up her mantle in her own way.
The review also downplays Willaāshe saves herself after Avantiās help, not Bob. To call this Bobās āheroās journeyā feels off; he does nothing heroic in Acts IIāIII and was never a leader, just the bomb guy.

Itās not a white savior story either, if anyone āsavesā Willa, itās Avanti, the Native American character. Regina Hallās role also works as a grounded revolutionary foil to Perfidia.
Take the grocery store scene the reviewer singles out: Lockjaw creepily tells Pat he āloves Black women more than he does.ā She calls it ārace play for laughs,ā but that misses the point. The scene is unsettling by design, imagine being Pat, with a Black wife and daughter, confronted by an unhinged old white man making that claim. Itās meant to disturb, not amuse.
I did notice some folks laughing at creepy scenes but this style of humor is something more reminiscent with dark humor.. š¤·š¾āāļø, breaking bad, Fargo⦠they have creepy moments that are awkward and can make people laugh not because they are funny but due to being uncomfortable.
The reviewer also fixates oddly on Willaās biracial identity and the Pat/Perfidia relationship. In doing so, she downplays both Perfidia and Willaās agency to reinforce her thesis that PTA āusedā them. The same goes for Bob, she frames him as central but provides no evidence of a heroās journey. In truth, Bob has no such arc. The film actually subverts tropes like the white savior, Willa outsmarts her would-be assassin, and Bob is left largely sidelined.
Nobody saves Willa which is the point. You canāt make complaints about such a story when itās about a white man bumbling his way and not actually having any impact when his daughter does all the work
Obieās critique leans on the idea that Perfidia fails because she isnāt Assata, that she doesnāt live up to a revolutionary ideal. But I think thatās a point of Andersonās portrayal: flawed revolutionaries are more real than perfect martyrs.
I think something that can be tricky is this idea of āperfect peopleā or romanization of figure from history without looking at them through critical lenses. Which leads into another thing that feels disingenuous from Obie,
āPat was a skilled bomb maker in a revolutionary group called the French 75, a group that closely resembles the real-life white marxist American guerilla group of the 1960s and ā70s, Weather Underground/The Weathermen, an offshot of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). Like the Weathermen, the French 75 bombs the outposts of their political enemies. Unlike the Weathermen, the French 75 is led by and made up of Black women.ā
But⦠she also wants to invoke Assata parallel, if thatās the case there is a group that makes more sense then the āweathermenā⦠the āBlack Liberation Armyā which Assata was a part ofā¦
|| https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Liberation_Army|| there is some background on the group for any curious on what the French75 were prob ālooselyā inspired by⦠as the actions of this group seem more inline with depiction of the French75 in the film
**āMexico without her infant daughter, never to be seen again.
But itās this lack of nurturing that underscores what Paul Thomas Anderson doesnāt get about Black women or Black revolutionaries.ā**
She argues that Perfidia abandoning her daughter proves PTA doesnāt āgetā Black women or Black revolutionaries. In her framing, a Black revolutionary mother must also be nurturing, present, and selfless otherwise it feels like she saying itās a caricature. Something about that doesnāt seem right about her framing itās almost as if there isnāt such thing as imperfection
She paints Perfidia as the āanti-Assataā selfish, cowardly, loveless while holding Assata up as the perfect revolutionary. But pretty sure in her own autobiography Assata herself admitted flaws and contradictions. I think youād be hard pressed to find a perfect revolutionary, and expecting Perfidia to be noble at all times misses the point. The film shows revolutionaries as messy humans, not icons.
She calls Perfidia hypersexualized , and a MacGuffin, Junglepussy hypersexualized, and Deandra disposable... But that erases the agency moments, Willa outsmarts her assassin and chooses her own path, Perfidiaās letter fuels her daughterās future. Deandra again represents the more nurturing revolutionary. Theyāre not just props, even if Anderson couldāve fleshed them out more.
She knocks PTA for slapping a Black womanās face on āWeathermen-style chaos.ā But she skips over the Black Liberation Army, who actually did messy stuff like robberies and shootouts. By only naming the Weathermen, she makes it sound like Anderson invented this dynamic, this is selective history.
She claims the film only cares about white menās interior lives. But Bob is weak and sidelined, Lockjaw is grotesque and condemned, and the real conflict is driven by Perfidia and Willa. To land her main argument about OBAA, she has to omit evidence from film of Bobās failures and Willaās independence, and the black womenās agency in this film.
People have a lot to say about this movie
its certainly the talk of the town
the resistance saves her initially, then she has to save herself, then saved again be Avanti
the saves herself again with the car, then gets saved again but by proxy of the CAC trying to kill Lockjaw
CAC?
Christmas Adventures Club
she saves herself with the car, and then shoots the assassin after tho?
Ahhh gotcha
Subtle moment, the Christmas adventure is tailing Avantis car because the intention was to kill avanti, idk if they counted on Willa being in there.
they were trying to tie up loose ends
make it clean
She never gets saved
The resistance did help her but she wasnāt even under threat yet
Every actual situation she was in, she got out of
Meanwhile Leo bumbling around
To be fair Avanti does help her out. He lets her go, before massacring the militamen
she then doubles back for the keys
and Regina Hall character comes in clutch w/the extraction
She has a few people that do help her but they never do anything for her
Like Regina extracting her and the guy just giving her the keys
i thought hed have left his car keys in the car for her
Nope she doubles back after the shooting stops, and takes the keys from avanti pocket
yeah i know lmao i thought he wouldve done that
That would have made sense
Lmaoo yeah, I wonder if the character thought he might someohow survive
bro went out red dead redemption style
Seems to be the case imo. Take out the militia guys then take her back home or something
"is anybody gonna come asking about you"
i thought he wasnt gonna do shit like the natives in sinners
it would have been over after 45min
could she have gotten out that ? unlikely as she would have likely been in either military prison or a secret scary basement prison
honestly, Lockjaw once he had her and the nun compound locked down, should have ran the test while in the car, instead of waiting around
great scenes though regardlesss
"why is your shirt so tight" incredible
I was surprised how little Leo did in the movie
He still had some great character development though
I liked Leo bumbling around.
I feel like Lockjaw has a lot of similarities to some PTA protagonists
Heās odd, tickish, and a hopeless romantic
Not too far off from Freddy or Barry
I'm starting to hate these types of movies that are so unbelievably hyped up that turn out to just be good and enjoyable but nothing mindblowing
It happened to me with Sinners
I knew I would be disappointed, but I'm still upset that this movie wasn't better
what did u guys think of the first 30-40 minutes of the movie
tbh the movie lived up to its name, I had over the sky expectations, and this movie did nothing but meet that.

this guy
ive heard nothing great about it either
heard soundtrack carries a hollow film
Aw man, I was hoping heād like it
I assumed he was smart enough to understand that the movie absolutely does not glorify the revolutionaries
At least if it does, itās in a far more nuanced way than he took it as
He has some insane takes in that video
He also has his review for the smashing machine out
worth a watch
Dude in what universe lol
Never watching one of that guy's videos ew
Heās had some unexpected takes
He loved Wicked and Eeaao
Heās also always saying he wants flawed female characters and straightforward, great action sequences
That guy doesnāt know what a flawed female character is. Just watch his short film- I mean show concept: Rogue Elements.
Tl;dr it was a really meh short movie that was funded by his viewers⦠so yikes. At least it isnāt as bad as Linkaraās movie.
As for this movie, I checked myself out as soon as I saw Penn forcing his pp to get big. I havenāt seen any other PTA movie besides There Will Be Blood, but this one had me checking the time at least five times. Contrast that to the avatar 2 rerelease and I had a complete opposite experience.
was listening to NPRs take on this movie was really
the shadow that Prefidia, a not so much shallow as single focus driven, casting a monsterous shadow over the entirety of the movie even after exiting like 45min in
over her daughter, her Bob, the rebellion that has evolved past what it was
I need to see this movie a 2nd time i guess
gross
Pretty bold move, wonder if she gets in https://variety.com/2025/film/awards/chase-infiniti-lead-actress-oscars-one-battle-after-another-1236543680/
Whoād she be competing against?
A few of the current frontrunners
Wicked for good aināt even out yet tho š how does that make sense for people to vote for her
Informed assumption based off the previous films nominations Iām figuring
If thatās the list I doubt chase winning
Ariana is a frontrunner for supporting again too
It doesnāt always pan out, Joker 2 was considered a frontrunner early on because of the first films success. Once the movie dropped it was out of the question lol
Weāre forgetting Emily blunt and or the Marty Supreme opposite of Timothy.
Blunts going supporting
I think Smashing Machine has sortve cooled in terms of Oscar buzz anyway. Big smash in Venice but more subdued in Toronto
Johnson may get in still but no longer seeming like the initial lock at the start of festival season following that Venice premiere
I think the movie was more of a slice of life pic which was a bit difficult to get at. Unlike the Iron Claw or Raging Bull (similar drama to action moments in both) I found this one to feel very out of pocket and sudden with the timeline. Marty Supreme will show which Safdie bro is better.
That being said, I can see why box office was meh.
Marty seems to have landed major at NYFF so it could be a player. At this point I think most eyes are on One Battle After Another and Hamnet
Pretty sure PTA movie will be the winner.
Unless a sudden Oscar pic in will pop up in Dec.
You know what? Shelby Oaks will be a worthy contender

Well, it's got the horror stigma against it. And I've not really seen it pop up in awards discussion. I don't say this to crap on the film, ive not seen it and I have heard good things, I just don't know if it's in the discussion
Nah the Academy will get Stuckmannized

I just want a bizarre year similar to Spike Leeās back to back loss to a movie about driving for a person of different race and learning that theyāre not so different along the way.
Finally watched it
What did ya think
5/5
She was great in the movie but was she a lead or supporting actress ?
š
I thought supporting
Same but then she's recommended for lead actress
Freedom is a funny thing, isn't it? When you have it, you don't appreciate it, and when you miss it, it's gone. One Battle After Another is an absolute triumph. Paul Thomas Andersonās latest absolutely deserves to be seen on the big screen as from the very first minute it kicks into high gear. At almost three hours, itās very long but with t...
Oscars can sometimes be so easy to predict
Lead, no?
Leo is billed higher cause of star power but besides the first 20 minutes she has more screen time than him I think
At least a very close amount
i remember it had ufos and aliens in an early test screening
Yeah i think so
How many award this gonna win
now that its been about two weeks, what is everyones thoughts on one battle after another overall?
solid flick
This guy got shot in the face just to go back to the same people and get suffocated lmfao
picture, director, MAYBE leo gets in but i thinks its between him and timothee rn so
Not in an early cut. They were never filmed
But the book itās based on has a lot more sci fi themes
Somehow even better the second time
I was in the cinema saying "From this point on, it's one battle after another" with Leo's V.O
Bob and Willa hugging after the chase fucking took me out this time

He literally the blue eyes meme
Yeah that bit got a huge laugh this time (from a very small audience who were surprisingly quiet, unlike opening weekend)
Also, I've somehow never seen this meme
I remember it getting a surge with Oppenheimer with Cillian Murphy and his naturally blue eyes
Timotheee for this new movie ?
marty supreme
also can we talk about that fuckass wig they put on alana haim š
Oh yeaah that. Its that good ?
seems like it from what ive heard
Ooh ok . Waiting for a digital release
also i gotta say playing american girl from fast times over the end credits was really funny considering
I love that scene. Itās peak of both lockjaws creepiness and awkward hilariousness
And Bobās absolutely stupefied expression after sells it
still cant believe people have walked out of this movie
Is sinner and obaa competing in different screenplay categories?
smh
yeah
āOriginalā while true, itās still influenced quite a bit by āFrom Dusk Till Dawnā
everythings influenced by everything yeah
Everythingās influenced from things
That doesnāt make it less original
Itās an original script whether you like it or not
One Battle After Another both presents itself and is an adaptation off Vineland
Why "The Smashing Machine," "One Battle After Another" and other buzzy films are failing to make a profit at the box office.
The theatrical experience has been made to not feel special anymore. There's no sense of need from people to flock to the theatres because of many factors. Streaming, poor marketing, the price of going. Streaming more in the sense of essentially telling people "btw this movie will be on demand in three weeks time".
Movies are also costing way too much nowadays
https://x.com/letterboxd/status/1978483577881833581?s=46 that was quick
while thats true, theatres still get a lot of people especially during long weekends and holidays and some movies are meant to be seen on the big screen./ its just that covid made and still makes people hesitate ( no idea why now), but also releasinga movie digitally and announcing it well before hand also makes people nOT TO GO to one and yea price is also expensive nowadays unless you have some kidn of memebership like cinehub in canada and get a standard ticket lke 6-7 bucks of
Poor box office performance for OBAA and movies like it are the new normal. Shame because I'd love to have more incentives for the industry to create more adult dramas. Movies are still a great entertainment value depending on how you look at it. Few things give you about two hours of entertainment for the price of a ticket. However you can also look at the value versus watching a streaming service for free.
watching it in a big screen is a completely different experience then watching it on your home tv ( unless your a nba or an nfl player who have thier OWN MINI HOME Theatres)
shes such a cutie
Hell yeH
yessss
š¤©
Love her first scene sm
Actors Leonardo DiCaprio (āThe Wolf of Wall Street,ā āThe Reverantā), Teyana Taylor (āComing 2 America,ā āStrawā), Chase Infinti (āPresumed Innocent,ā āThe Testamentsā), Sean Penn (āMilk,ā āLicorice Pizzaā), Regina Hall (āGirls Trip,ā āThe Hate U Giveā), and Benicio del Toro (āSin City,ā āSicarioā)...
OH yeab for sure
Frfr
She was so good in this movie
Leo eating shit off the rooftop still gives me a good laugh
Fuck yeah she was
Haha
falls down just to get tazed šš
Idk man, with Minecraft in play as well I just hope they give their two strongest contenders equal push /s
Seeing this on a small screen feels a disservice
I will be copping the 4k/steelbook when itās available
U didnt see it in the theatre?
Of course I did, but for rewatches
In his review Ben Shapiro said āJohnny Greenwood did the score, not sure who that isā
HOW?!?
If u think Benās was dodgy check out drinkers, Foxās, then on the other aisle there is Brooke Obie take⦠I found herās to be worse than drinkers, Benās, and Fox combined.
AAH ok
I saw an official news article similar to Obieās take and it dwelled so much on the āfetishizationā of it all, especially jungle pussys character
Criticizing how only a man could come up with that name or something
But thatās literally the actresses name lmao
yeah not gonna hit nearly as hard š
Way better than I thought it would do
Ye, nice to see a decent turnout for it, even if it's still facing down flopping
Flopping,,?? Wdym flopping
Itās only barely over the budget
And budgets often underestimate the actual cost
Im mostly curious when it well get to the top of 2025 on letterboxd
It has to at some point tight?
oH wow
I thoguht itbwas doing well
Opening weekend anyways
Itās doing better than what was expected at the least, but yeah it was still very expensive
I think WB knew it was going to be the case but took the risk as it would be making a big showing at awards season, which has proven now to be the case
Oh i see
Steely Dan may be the best needledrop of the year
šÆ
once this goes through the awards season, they might do a re release and it will make a shit ton of money
fan frikin tastic movie
best time in a theatre ive had in 2025
very excited for bugonia tho, cause emma stone is my fav actress and the favourite is one of my all time favs (same with La La Land)
it is a good one yeah
Excited to finally put together my Bob costume
Exactly yeah
Awards arguably do more for a studio than initial gross
this is such an elite costume
iām probably gonna do that next year when i start college
Me in my Bob Furgeson costume
lmfao
hahah
Paul Thomas Anderson's 'One Battle After Another' will hit 4K UHD and Blu-ray on January 20, 2026, nearly four months after its theatrical opening.
Pre-order here: https://t.co/hzC7KfzByC
nice
If this somehow wins best picture, Iām gonna be super upset. 3.5/5
Just watched it. IT felt sooo meh
Wait im confused
Meh but 7/10??
Lol
Am curious what your pros/cons were
Pros is legit just DiCaprio losing his shit to everyone. And everything
Cons was, I didnāt feel tension or like āoh shit theyāre comingā. The wanna be tough chick wanna change the world thinks she was hot stuff but just loved being in power over people ratted out her own people to make herself feel free and shit.
I really didnāt like her character in the beginning. That whole beginning was just why the fuck are you acting like this.
I felt that made her more nuanced then some girl boss
Used the side plot of the underground society of white people to take out the power hungry army guy just because he had bdsm kinks and loves black chicks.
Itās was so annoying like some child who learned how to post on a forum about making a revolution
But he didnāt love black folks, he fetishizes them. Thatās the contrast between the colonel and DiCaprio character.
They wasted the side character. He was great but they made him like a source of transportation for DiCaprio from point a to point b and he showed the audience of the immigrant proble
I think the āshockā was that everyone knew who DiCaprio was to the resistance but thatās like a āyeah no shitā at least to me.
If youāre using real life politic point of views, how is that a shock by any standard
Also that last scene of āthe car chaseā or whatever the fuck that was, they made it seem like she was being chased down. No character in each car knew who each driver was.
I will saw it was clever how they did a ācar chaseā with the uneven hills of the road.
That whole time Iām like, how the fuck do you know that car is chasing you down.
Idk, there was so many misplays for me. Shit was just happening just to move forward.
If anything that this movie tells me as a viewer, is that your parents actions fucks with a childās future.
Anything āpoliticalā Iām like yeah no shit. Being chased down, yeah no shit, being hunted from place to place from people that know you, yeah no shit, being tracked by phone calls and signals, yeah no shit. A higher force of authority wants to clean his past so he can reach a higher peak of authority from an underground society of white men that want to purify society, YEAH NO SHIT.
this was no just bad guys vs good guys film, itās just bad people wanting different versions of bad. By doing different versions of bad actions
Also, the āgood guysā didnāt even win. THE DAUGHTER IS STILL PARTICIPATING IN REVOLUTIONARY ACTIONS JUST AS HER MOTHER
Eddington is way better than this. And way more on top of the political views of today
Bro how is a 7/10 meh š
7/10s for me are pretty good
I thought it was overrated as well but thought it was p solid. Def not the masterpiece everyone is hyping is up to be but I would've liked it quite a bit if I had low expectations
I lowered it to a 2.5 after some focused criticism
Ah I see
its weird cause the video reviews ive seen talking about this film, its like yeah you should be uncomfortable with that opener of a film.
and to me, im not because that is what my environment has always been. i feel like thats what it comes down to it. if the setting of this film is so common and relatable then its like a yeah, whatever, whats new or different. this shit has always been happening. it only matters now because its been televised. and now that EVERYONE sees it, it matters.
also the idea with one battle after another. that shit is common with us "minorities". because it literally is if its not one thing, its another thing. its ingrain within our mindset that theres no such thing of theres nothing to do. THERES ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DO OR IS HAPPENING.
so i kind of find it hilarious that those who are "praising" this film being the best film of the year, never been in that environment where theres always something happening outside our walls. Just because they put a "political" spin on it doesnt make it way more visible and important now compared that way before.
which is why i love eddington more because its literally a MIRROR HELD UP TO THE PUBLIC AND SAYING THIS IS HOW YOU IDIOTS LOOK LIKE AND ACT LIKE WITH YOUR PRECIOUS IDEAS AND SELF RICHTEOUS IDEOLOGY. And in that film, one of the characters didnt even care. he just wanted to hook up with a girl who did care. That is way more relevant than this film.
they attack a govt site and they think they'll forget about them over the course of time. PSHH YEA RIGHT.
i remember a philosophy prof asking the class, "is freedom free if someone tells you youre free"? people think their free because consequences hasnt been applied yet.

my favorite take of the entire film. it makes sense why i disliked it so much because everyone who is trying to push change and cause chaos, im like what the hell are you doing. you dont know what change is. you dont know what political fight we're battling.
that entire first act was like what are you doing. declaring war by a group from within. like what
the new generation dont understand what a revolution means.
I like that take
I felt like I was the only one who liked Eddington more than this movie
I feel like this movie wasnāt as politically charged or relevant as everyone claimed it was
Like thatās just the backdrop
I felt that the themes were more on fatherhood
And how true change comes from within
or some shit like that
idk
im not smart
thats an insane take. since the first scene is them attacking a containment camp filled with immigrants. And through out the whole film it was about "getting rid" of them. from black to white people.
you cant tell me fatherhood also involves breaking federal laws and blowing up federal buildings and infiltrating federal areas
if youre talking about eddington than thats even MORE INSANE
in this film, they legit were running away from federal agents. a bunch of undocumented people who lived in a house were trying to escape because they were chasing down dicaprio
in eddington. a small town was trying to not let new laws and regulations control their beliefs, even if its the sake of protecting the people. they dont like the feeling of control. ALSO it reflected on everything that was going on at the time BLM, police brutality. They legit didnt care how the black police officer was because they treated him as a friend and a co-worker. but once the "cant breathe" thing happened, his partner was constantly asking him " ARE YOU OK"?. dude was just like " yeah, im fine".
THE DAD OF THE WHITE KID WHO STARTED TO PROTEST WHITE POWER BECAUSE HR WANTED TO DATE THE GIRL LITERALLY SAID "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, YOURE WHITE".
What you have to realize is that this movie has just as much political stuff as say, Star Wars. The difference is that itās REAL politics and in real life.
I think itās a really interesting choice that gets the audience to really think about everything. Itās easy to root for the resistance in Star Wars cause everything is fake but in this movie itās more complicated. The Resistance is at times pretty pathetic
Iām not saying this movie doesnāt take some clear political stances but I also think it isnāt neatly as black and white as some people make it out to be. Especially the scene where Perfidia shoots an innocent man. You are supposed to think āwait why am I rooting for these people?ā
And its really only the first 20 minutes that are political. The rest has some political moments but the characters take the front seat
Basically, humanity sucks
The world is a disaster and we are doomed
There is no point in fighting because you will just lose
I mean we see it in here
They lose
I think itās more humanity can suck but also it can be beautiful at times. It contrasts the pure evil of the Christmas adventurers with the complex but very good hearted main characters
Maybe
But optimism is bad
It clouds your mind
The world sucks and we cant do anything about it
All we can do is fuck off and live on our owns while the world goes to shit
a lot of the film version of French 75 and perfidia draws inspiration from Black Liberation Army.
Maybe but I think the ending is way too hopeful for that
Thatās not the point!
I may be projecting a bit because i think the ending is optimistic and optimism is kinda bad
The movie ends with Willa going out on her mission now. Itās about passing the baton to the younger generations as they fight against injustice
yeah i mean it works for the fjlm
It works in real life too
But in reality, evil wins
Well, no
Thereās not really an objective answer to that
As the film says, itās up to you whether you choose to fight or give in and accept the situation
Youāve given in. But some people will fight
I would say optimism is the only thing that has prevented the world from already going to shit. The reason things have improved at all over the last thousand years is because there have been people who are optimistic enough to keep on fighting for good even though it seems like its no use. The pessimists are the assholes who just sit by while shit happens to them because in their minds theres no point.
That being said I donāt think this movie really has a big point to it. Itās just a movie following some characters in front of the backdrop of bigger conflicts and those characters end up prevailing against all odds and continue to fight the good fight.
This movie is sort of the antithesis to Eddington. Both are great movies that bring up big problems in the world and imo they are both equally important.
yeah... no thanks. i got bills.
But youāre casually rich
i agree with your mindset but the word "evil" is too subjective. i would go with greedy. because one will flourish while the other suffers
Lets not sugarcoat it
The world is evil and regressive and greedy
its only evil because the image we put on evil
what we see what evil in one place can be tradition in another
also "evil" is only attached to the human race. cant apply evil to animals
then it would be just survival
I hate reality tbh
We live in the worst timeline
āEvilā depends on what ever morale frameworks a person is taught though?
No just
The world sucks
yup
not if you live in a remote location with no access to world news
sounds like depression from you imo
Im not depressed lol i got.ovrr that ages ago
Im realistic
Im being realistic
I should say
but i just had pizza and my life is better than this morning
I think a large part of bigotry stems from ignorance and lack of exposure to others. That can change when people are exposed to others that are different than them.
Iād highly recommend watching a documentary by Deeyah Khan,
https://youtube.com/@deeyahkhan?si=CeiX1DjF3JJSNvGb
she uploads her vids to this channel, she goes to people that hate her and interacts with them to try and get to bottom of differences, and other intense topics.
YouTube
Documentary director and producer Deeyah Khan has won two Emmys, a BAFTA, an RTS and two Peabody Awards in over a decade of making empathetic and unflinching films which deal with some of the most important and polarising issues confronting the world today; extremism, violence against women, inequality, racism and social exclusion.
Deeyah has f...
travel, and youll see some places are better than others
theres a book i read that really explained the double-sided views on these social topics
freaking loved this book
Why is this name familiar?
The comparison between this and Eddington not something I would make since they're two almost unrelated movies. What ties them together is the political themes. But I agree with people who said OBAA isn't really about politics but about a father daughter action movie. Eddington is a great movie because it's got messages that both liberals and conservatives can point to and say that supports their views. When I watched it in theaters, there were almost two groups laughing at different scenes. In a way it was wonderful.
what are we some kinda one battle after another
The film everyone's been talking about is coming home. #OneBattleAfterAnother will be available on Digital 11/14.
Dam that feels kinda fast. Film be in theaters for 1 month or less and straight to digital
I thought it was the 20th?
Wow
Bouta stream tf out it
Itās a good strat. Get people talking about the release and just as itās about to leave, you release it on VOD to keep the buzz going.
Been like that since Covid. Before that it was exactly 4 months before it hit on home video/VOD.
At the start of the millennium it was about 8 months. Crazy to think how much distribution had to accommodate in favor of the times.
I do miss those times
It was a novelty. Hit films stuck in theaters for months on end until it completes its run. If I recall Titanic was in theaters for a full year.
That VHS box set was everywhere
It made it a big deal when they finally came out at home
Same with Avatar Blu-ray
And obviously the cinema was much more of an event
You see that as part of the Blu-ray starter pack with accompanying PS3
Now I find myself saying āIām 50/50 on this so Iāll watch it at home in 2 weeksā
If it was gonna be in cinemas for 4 months I would think different
Iād say that was the waning era of event films. Cameronās releases are such outliers vs the norm.
Considering event films like Ben-Hur is such a foreign concept now.
Hell Iād watch a Ben-Hur. At least with Kalki 2898AD it was such a treat. Outside of Cameron, Nolan is like that too. Odyssey already sold tickets for its imax screening.
MCU had that for a bit too with the Avengers series.
The fact that they wrote a well articulate article for a take that's actually bonkers (in a bad way).
@tidal sonnet
@tidal sonnet hereās a break down on that article
@tidal sonnet and this part
even if this movie didn't make the point it was trying to, it is still a fantastic movie, because it dared to, and indeed challenged it's own ideas head on. I also really didn't think this movie was trying to make any one point, rather force us to think about our own views on the events and ideas presented in the movie
also yall r talking about the nolan odyssey movie coming out soon, and while I think much of his stuff is heavily overrated, I can't wait at all cause im a huge junkie for all things greek mythology wise
Wait was the last Ben Hur film an event? I loved it but I love ancient Rome setting. Were you around for the OG Ben Hur?
I didnāt expect people to remember the Timur movie
I may act really old but I wasnāt around for that. I have older family and they told me along with observation of film before television.
Also I suggest the Robe for the romanticized early christian setting Rome, Caligula for Rated X Rome or Barbarian (season 1 is really good historically speaking)
I've seen Barbarians. Pretty ambitious to do it in Latin. Have to check out the Robe.
Itās decent, I like the Robe mainly because itās a skeptic who just wanders into an event that people canāt stop talking about.
Caligula is so bizarre. I saw a Blu-ray of it but didnāt buy, by the looks of it,it didnāt hold back in its rating.
I think they recently rereleased it with the director cut in theaters. I don't hear much about it except the shock value, which is pretty tame now by today's standards.
Also you're not going to recommend gladiator? Lol
Also The Eagle and Spartacus TV ssries are great Rome movies
Sucks Season 2 had historian consultants walk out.
Figured I donāt need to if you like the setting
Usually itās the introduction to those types of swords and sandals films. Spartacus the original movie is neat but you can see Trumboās then ideological statement getting in the way of the actual events from the revolts it was based on. Kubrick hated working with Douglas as a result of shooting that film.
Huh interesting color to the production. As long as it doesn't affect the product itself,
You watched Cleopatra?
Exactly like from the opening it paints these ārevolutionariesā as morally grey at best
I guess it gains points for being relevant but PTA wrote this script what like 10 years ago
No, I gotta get that in too. I think I've seen the tv series from the 1999
HBO Rome too
Also Rome Battle After Another
I've seen that. Too bad the production only lasted 2 seasons. Was probably what got me originally interested in the time period.
Iāll take this to a different chat at #movies-ii
aaaaah
Gaah beat me to it lol
who got that one scene
Still my film of the year
yeah that oscar is secured
interesting
Watching again now that itās on digital
Itās so good man, I wish I owned a vista screen or something.
that would be the dream
from here on in its one battle after another
