In Superman (2025), there's a scene where the Engineer (Angela) attempts to…

|| suffocate Superman by filling his lungs with nanites. The nanites also suppress his optic nerve, leaving him completely blind. With his face entirely covered in nanites and unable to remove them, ||
Superman flies upward. Both the Engineer and Ultraman follow him into the air.

During the aerial confrontation, the Engineer holds onto Superman and completely envelops his body with nanites (upon Luthor's prompting), while Ultraman catches up and begins punching Superman. At some point —possibly in space— Superman reverses course and plummets back to Earth, with the Engineer still clinging to him and Ultraman continuing his assault.

As they descend, the Engineer realizes she won't be able to withstand the impact. Lex Luthor warns her over the comms to disengage, explaining that Superman is protected from the crash (apparently because the nanites covering his body are acting as a protective shell), but for some reason, she is unable to do so. Ultraman manages to detach before they crash, but the Engineer and Superman slam into the ground together, and the impact knocks her unconscious.

Several aspects of this sequence raise questions. Superman couldn't have known the Engineer would completely envelop him with nanites or that she'd be unable to remove them in time. Even Lex can't figure out what Superman is doing, asking, "What's his game?" One of Lex's minions replies that he's using friction to remove the nanites from his face, but another points out it won't matter since they're still in his lungs. It's also puzzling why the Engineer would completely cover him with nanites (which ironically protects him during the crash) when just covering his face and filling his lungs should have been enough to suffocate him. The Engineer's failure to disengage despite having control over the nanites is equally puzzling.

Why did Superman fly upward during the nanite suffocation sequence, leading to the Engineer being unable to disengage?

I was a bit confused too initially but what happened here was that, Superman was suffocating from those nanites and hence what he did was go far above in the sky knowing full well that the engineer and Ultra man would chase after him and try to capture him, then he can go down at huge speeds thereby making the engineer unconscious and getting those nanites out..

I wondered if he was trying to burn them off in reentry

and maybe Supes thought the others wouldn't be able to breathe in space and would dis-engage

The ability of the film to hit a billion rest solidly on the Week 2 numbers, and the amount of people turning around and realizing that “unflavored liquid is pretty tasty”.

It has nothing to do with anything other than the pressures it has to make it back in the box office.
The studio has its shareholders and movie financiers to worry about… so the more you spend, the more you need to make it back AND more to keep them happy. Like, if a mega billionaire wants to make a 10billion dollar film on their own dime, they won’t really have any pressures of not even releasing it.
Once the budget passes 100mil, it’s no longer an indication of quality nor scope, just a line number of what the studio is willing to spend on a given script.
