Escaping post-war Europe, visionary architect Låszló Tóth arrives in America to rebuild his life, his work, and his marriage to his wife Erzsébet after being forced apart during wartime by shifting borders and regimes. On his own in a strange new country, Låszló settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee ...

Just got out of this a few years ago.

Not entirely sure what to make of it just yet.

Crazy to be watching a modern-day movie with an intermission; can’t believe I saw one in the theater

What to make of it

The whole discourse is gonna be comparing the two parts, like we did with Dune, fuck me.

#

Got plenty more movies to see but I think I got put Brutalist in my top three, it slapped

#

I will probably need a re-viewing before anything.

#

I think the movie juggles a lot sometimes and the payoff isn't there for all things introduced.

#

Corbet touched on topics I feel he doesn't have the authority on.

#

And the screenplay fails to do them justice.

Finally they locally distributed the film. Shame it isn't on the big screen

Feels like a subversion of Fountainhead.

I learnt that Armond White doesn't like 70mm or good lighting/framing I guess

The irony of using AI in a movie involving architecture.

Are there Academy rules for this yet? This is just lazy.

Now on intermission

#

The brutalist seems decent so far

#

Love the film visually, ost sounds great, Lazlo seems interesting of a character so far

#

I can imagine Harrison and his family will turn on him somehow

#

But yeah thank god for an intermission

#

Well 3 mins left till intermission, can’t wait for what is next

trim rampart
#

Just finished

#

Still making my mind of it

#

But it was an interesting film

#

But overall, I’ve found the movie overall to be persuasive and intellectually stimulating

viral eagle
#

That scene with Van Buren & Laszlo is 10 minutes long

trim rampart
#

But yeah still thinking of the film. It is definitely about the American Dream, Immigration, and legacy and others I still yet to remember

#

And I just learned that this film was made with 10 million and it’s pretty damn impressive

#

But yeah one think I could think of is the scene of why Harrison makes Lazlo say "Yes King"

#

I see it as a deeper message of America destroying culture of immigrants

#

Cause of how they're in Italy

#

and Lazlo seems to be really comfortable there

#

while Harrison is out of his element and hates Italy

#

And when both are alone for that scene. Harrison does it out of desperation for control. To Dominate Lazlo

#

But then after, Lazlo seems to endure his actions and stand tall. Making that building more to represent him than Harrison's mother. His legacy standing tall

#

tbh I feel like my interpretation feels a bit unrefined

viral eagle
#

No you're on to it.

#

Also it's a Ayn Rand subversion, you can be brutal and uncompromising about your vision but Laszlo is still a man of commune, after vun Buren insults Gordon, he walks

trim rampart
trim rampart
#

But yeah thinking about more of Toth and Harrison's Dynamic. They quite literally also this

Harrison: America hiring Immigrants to help build the cities, railroads, etc

Lazlo: Those very immigrants, whether European, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Black. Worked to help build this country

viral eagle
#

The "intellectually stimulation conversation" meme, even on the first one I picked up that Laszlo though, who is this dude?

Brady Corbert says the AI technology from Respeecher was used in ‘THE BRUTALIST’ for “Hungarian language dialogue editing only, specifically to refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy. No English language was changed.”

#

My review: The Brutalist is a film about someone who is striving to live in the American Dream. The movie is very direct in it's presentation that the "idea" of success is not achievable for everyone. The main character Laszlo is an immigrant and is an architect. He gets taken advantage of by the wealthy immoral people. He destroys himself with drugs. He also struggles to connect with people who support him. His wife is sick and needs love but that is a struggle for him too. Towards the end of the movie his greatest achievement is the building he constructed. His longing for an institution is very clear. He wants to be in a space where he is loved and nurtured so he can participate in the dream of happiness. The story is too heavy for me but there are parts of it that I really enjoy. The style is 100% There are also many parts of the movie I really dislike and feel embarrassed for seeing the scenes play out on film. Not my favorite movie but the independence of the title design and credits was a treat.

shadow tulip
#

If more movies can bring back an intermission that would be great

#

Why were the characters so flawed in this story?

#

The momentum of the story ends on a sad note to my ears. Was that intentional?

Does anyone here agree with this?

If one of the film’s most important themes is that the interior of every person is unknowable, maybe even to them, then I think the sex works to make that strangeness manifest. All of the sexually-charged interactions in the movie are impossibly convoluted; we could talk forever about what’s going on in the handjob scene or the dancing-with-cousin scene or the sex-while-high scene, and I don’t think we’d ever get to the bottom of it. Every character wants multiple contradictory things and I don’t think any of them understand it themselves.
