So im currently in my senior year getting ready for college applications to come out. and I just need some advice. So I want to go film school. I know people say its not needed but I already know 100% I want to go. But its just the where and living part of it. I obviously wanna go to California but its pretty expensive to live there and I would be paying everything on my own (besides 2 years of a GI bill I get) and I currently live in Arizona and have 0 desire to stay here for another 4 years of my life I just cant do it. And Im wanting to move out not because of something I have against my parents or anything Im just ready to be by myself. I guess where I'm going with this is anyone that had to pay for college and living expenses by themselves. How did you do it and where did you go to college? Since I'm in the early stages of college apps I don't mind changing and doing researches on other places. my current list of colleges is. Safeties: ASU UOFA, Targets: CHAPMAN UNCSA, Reaches, USC Cal Arts.

Even tho I went to film school, I'm still pretty anti film school. But I see there's no talking you out lol so let's see what advice I can give

First, california is wild. It's generally only a good idea if you already have work out there. After all, everyone and their mom who wants to be a filmmaker goes there. Not to mention it's your first time going away from home and thats pretty far. Luckily there are some other film hubs closer to you that would be cheaper such as Austin, Atlanta, Dallas, and Orlando

Personally I couldn't afford to move out for college, so I stayed home and commuted the 1 hour each way every day

No matter where you go tho money will be a big thing. First time being on your own means first time with major expenses. Luckily when I was a student I found a couple websites that scouer for student discounts on your behalf such as https://www.myunidays.com/US/en-US and https://www.studentbeans.com/us

Most film schools offer the same as far as education. How to use a camera is so trivial there are hundreds of youtube videos on it. It's why I don't like filmschool. If you're going your main goals should be everything else. IE is there a strong film community so you can get work and be on sets? Does the school have gear you want so you can shoot your own films outside of class? What about locations? Look up alumni and see what they've done after graduating. Think about what field you want to go in. Chicago is big on TV but not much as far as major films. California has major films but it's so expensive that it's hard for anyone to make it
