What is it about the mask that you find silly?

I love how he turns his weakness, that is needing an oxygen mask to stay alive, into a form of intimidation

worldly shard

Man I feel dumb.

#

I overlooked he needed it.

#

How on earth is that mask silly

#

It’s one of the sickest designs ever

austere fractal
#

I agree, the mask is sick

white jay
#

I feel is perfectly ok.

#

I don't find it a mind-blowing genius design but is far from silly. Looks actually quite in line with the tone of the film.

#

I love how in the Mad Max world there’s some absolutely ludicrous ideas but they make total sense in the world

#

In the olden days armies would be led by war drums, why not war electric guitars

#

Of course people are gonna take advantage of the lack of resources and become insane, fearmongering, godlike figures to take advantage of these needs

white jay
#

I find interesting that Miller despite clearly taken advantage of the post-apocalyptic setting with a lawless and uncivilized world that seems to be ruled by the survival of the most ruthless, still somehow pieces of the old world and culture prevails as one of those leaders like Immortal Joe seems to use parts of those old civilizations culture like the Vikings "Valhalla" and the Roman titles of Imperator and Praetorian.

I thought it was kind of silly that immortan Joe just looks and acts exactly the same in the years between Furiosa and Fury Road

#

Like we see him in Fury Road all fucked up and powdered with a breathing apparatus and this crazy name....it would have been nice to see, somewhat, how he got that way. Instead of just being exactly the same like 10 or 20 years earlier or whatever

#

Like he could've been a warlord who actually faught in that whole "wasteland war" that we only really see montage clips of, and survived something insane that burned his lungs, giving him the need for the apparatus and also earning him the moniker of Immortant for surviving

#

Or at least something instead of just him copy pasted

austere fractal
#

Well I think if we got Mad Max: The Wasteland, we would get that

distant osprey
#

We got Immortan Joe's backstory in one of the comics I think. I'm pretty sure The Wasteland would be a version of the Mad Max video game and would essentially tell the story of why Scrotus is not alive/present in Fury Road

#

you can sort of see the teases of what I imagine The Wasteland would be about. Max protects some people (his visions in Fury Road) as Scrotus wants them. (the way Scrotus plays with young Furiosa would probably play some part, in that he'd be interested in the little girl specifically) and it would end with some calamity where both scrotus and the people max tries to protect would die and him basically being hunted by warboys in the sequence we see in the beginning of Fury Road

white jay
#

too bad that aint happening now...

#

The Wasteland i mean

#

I would watch ngl

distant osprey
#

I would also watch it but that's just because I'm a fan :P

#

but one can always play the video game too. It was quite good to be honest

white jay
#

nah i dont have money or time for videogames nowadays

#

but good to know

#

It's going to take time, but I think it'll be critically acclaimed one day, just like Fury Road

#

Maybe his kids will make The Wasteland, he just needs to write it before he dies

worldly shard
#

That’s interesting.

austere fractal
#

Well, I guess it is

#

But corporate people only care about the money

worldly shard
#

That’s an unfair generalization most people working for movie studios just want to put food on their table and feed families.

austere fractal
#

I know I know, I'm massively generalising here

worldly shard
#

And making a movie even a bad one is one of the hardest things to do. It takes years of hard work.

austere fractal
#

Believe me I know, especially a Mad Max movie

distant osprey
#

I could see how he could make another Mad Max movie, just with a much smaller scope and scale. Make it cheaper

worldly shard
#

To whoever used the laugh emoji I wasn’t joking.

austere fractal
#

No-budget

distant osprey
#

Someone else would probably have to make a truly no-budget mad max as that kind of filmmaking is for the young

#

If it does great on VOD we might get Wasteland?

#

honest question

#

me cares 0 fucks about box office so i dont know

worldly shard
distant osprey
#

it's not that meaningless

white jay
#

I thought they meant meaningless for them... for the industry is absolutely important

#

I personally could not care less

#

most the films i love bomb

#

but then again i do pay attention when i want a sequel

#

cuz if they bomb usually no chance like with The Nice Guys

distant osprey
#

being VOD #1 is usually peanuts in money compared to good theatrical box office. But the numbers are a bit vague generally. If we get a Wasteland it will be one with a fraction of the budget

#

and then it depends on if Miller wants to make it with a fraction of the budget or not

white jay
#

Oh I see yeah makes sense thank you!

distant osprey
#

there's of course also the tax subsidies from Australia that the movie got. That might also play into how much of a loss to WB the movie is. And the Wasteland might just be a smaller scope movie to begin with and thus was always planned with a lesser budget in mind

#

The thing about Mad Max is that it's such a rich world of stuff to draw from that I would love there to be more. Even if it was comics or video games or whatever (not that I've actually read the comics) But also I don't want it to become oversaturated...

#

There's a kind of magic in imagining the world. But it's also nice to actually get more of it :P

#

Like in the begining of Furiosa we see the green place and it's such a neat design. And also we see how the wasteland is already encroaching on it, turning it into the swamp it will become in Fury Road. And just in a couple of seconds of shot there's so much story there!

#

I want to rewatch Furiosa just to spend more time in the green place :D

white jay
#

If it was me I would put Tom Hardy in the middle of the Australian desert with some goons dressed like psychos and start shooting guerilla style but then again Miller already did that with Mel Gibson in 79 so he probably not interested at this point in his career and I respect that too. If we do get something more no matter what it is...as a huge Mad Max fan I will be there tho. I also truly loved the world building in Furiosa... Is an insane and fascinating post-apocalyptic world setting.

distant osprey
#

I wonder if it could be handed over to someone younger, because the fact is it's harder to do guerilla style shooting when one is an old man :D

worldly shard
distant osprey
#

from context I think you can derive that it's not about quality, it's about the chances of getting a sequel

#

and box office definitely matters then

worldly shard
distant osprey
#

I read some stories where they mentioned Miller as "well liked" by Warner Brothers. So I assume he has a bit of a reputation of bringing things in on budget. Though I do think Fury Road was fairly troubled in that respect, but maybe it was just a grueling shoot, not actually over budget. So that also enters into it. If he's willing and given a smaller budget WB might believe he can actually do it

#

hot tub time machine 2 was half the budget of the first one (with I think a lot of the main cast not even returning to it) and by bombing standards the first one bombed less than Furiosa
