#

Is this even worth it wihtout Andy Serkis?

quiet crater
#

absolutely

#

that's why it's new characters and everything. Serkis's story is over and it was a good ending. Let someone do something new with it

calm fern
#

I'm so fucking glad I rewatched the trilogy cause I completely forgot that Ceaser fucking dies at the end of War lmao

lyric condor
#

Pretty good. It's lighter on action in the third act than the modern trilogy that you'd expect and is a bit long. But, it lets you sink into its world, takes the time to develop and give you time with its characters. A lot of the new ones are quite likeable (or interesting), which is a pretty miraculous sell given it's about completely new. It is also a quite stunning movie most of the time (I think my only complaint is that sometimes the daytime forest scenes less colorful that you'd hope). Villain is quite charismatic. The intro will surprise you.

#

I have some spoiler thoughts

#

||anybody feeling like Rakka and Proximus's deaths were a bit sus? both supposedly die in water (one by falling a hundred feet into it, the other by getting killed by the flow) but we never see their inanimate bodies. I wonder if they wanna continue with those characters down the line.||

calm fern
tribal wind
#

Absolutely incredible movie

#

Makes me appreciate the entire whole trilogy more

#

The trilogy is literally perfect

#

Now seeing in retrospective

#

And this movie was more so perfect in its message and themes

#

But still it was very greatly made

#

One of the best movies of the year for sure

pulsar bronze
#

That was fantastic, loved it.

#

The absolute gut punch of watching the whole series for the first time within 24 hours like

#

Goddamnit I had just cried over ||Caesar’s death in War|| literally two hours before the film started and they hit me with that opening lol

||Plus the villain. Genuinely hated him immediately for both his and his henchmen’s misuse of Caesar’s name.||

They knocked the writing out for sure.

Particularly Mae and Noa have a super compelling and interesting dynamic, both great characters in their own right.

Proximus is a pretty great villain too.

Never felt the length at all. It was so engrossing for me, it flew by.

#

||Mae killing Trevathan caught me off guard(though it did quickly click why she did it), insane moment.||

calm fern
#

HOLY SHIT THAT FUCKING ENDING DUDE!

#

PLEASE FUCKING TELL ME WE'RE GETTING A NEW TRILOGY

#

THERE HAS TO BE MORE

pulsar bronze
#

Well, unlikeable in the third act

calm fern
#

Fuck her so much omg

#

I wanted her to fail so bad

pulsar bronze
#

Yeah

#

||When she detonated the dam I glared at screen lol||

#

||And her holding the gun when she went to speak to Noa was liiiike||

tribal wind
#

Lol y’all missing the point of the film

#

She is by no means the bad person here

#

Heck

#

If it wasn’t for her the apes wouldn’t be saved

pulsar bronze
#

Yeah i know lol

tribal wind
#

They’d still be slaves

#

Proximus was a smart and very multi dimensional villain

#

EVERY line of dialogue he had was perfect in execution and everything

pulsar bronze
#

Don’t worry none of this stuff was lost on me lol, was more of just stating some very surface level stuff lol

#

And yeah the writing was fantastic

#

Performances all great

tribal wind
#

So I feel u lol

#

Altho Civil War was wayyy more deeper

#

This one was pretty obvious that neither could trust each other

pulsar bronze
#

Mae is honestly one of the most interesting humans of this series

tribal wind
#

They LITERALLY say it on the screen like 3+ times šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€

tribal wind
#

I am also a simp but- yes

#

THAT IS NOT THE POINT šŸ’€

pulsar bronze
#

I love her dynamic with Noa

#

through the film

tribal wind
#

Noa started SOOOO WEAKKK

#

Unlike Caesar who was a BOSS even as a de-evolutionized ape

pulsar bronze
#

He has such a strong character arc

#

But yeah. Mae is kind of morally grey but also what she did in the third act was necessary to help the apes out of the hellhole.

Her debate with Noa at the end is really interesting.

pulsar bronze
# tribal wind Noa started SOOOO WEAKKK

Really goes to show how different their lives growing up were yeah. Quite different lifestyles leading to them having different strengths and weaknesses, portrayed very well.

#

||Also Noa’s confusion when Mae says ā€œshitā€ is hilarious||

#

Well maybe confusion is bad word choice lol

#

I am so happy this film lived up to the expectations from the trilogy’s greatness

Idk where I’d rank it yet

#

Definitely above Rise

calm fern
#

For me it goes
Dawn
Kingdom
War
Rise

pulsar bronze
#

Anyone else see this before the film started

pulsar bronze
calm fern
#

I absolutely loved Proximus so bad and was holding out a little bit for him to be a mainstay like Koba was

tribal wind
#

War
Kingdom
Rise
Dawn

For me

pulsar bronze
#

Koba and Proximus are both such superb villains

tribal wind
#

The final act of War is a piece of artful humanity

pulsar bronze
#

The ending made me cry

#

And then two hours later Kingdom’s like ā€œHey bitch, cry againā€

tribal wind
#

Caesar mercy’ing the villain in War

#

HOT DANG

calm fern
#

OMG I WANTED TO CRY AT THE BEGINNING OF KINGDOM

pulsar bronze
#

I diiiid

#

I saw the trilogy for the first time today and last night

tribal wind
pulsar bronze
tribal wind
pulsar bronze
#

Yeah definitely

tribal wind
#

This new trilogy

#

Gonna be insane

#

And yes

#

There’s gonna be more

#

Someone said they hoped

#

They literally said from the beginning this was gonna be a new trilogy

pulsar bronze
#

Pleaseplease dont let this flop lol

tribal wind
#

It probably won’t

calm fern
#

I seriously want a new trilogy

tribal wind
#

It seems they’re extremely careful with this

#

It’s one of the most perfect film series rn

calm fern
#

I can't fucking believe the newspaper from Rise actually became fucking relevant dude!

pulsar bronze
#

I am interested in how they’ll go about having the humans v apes conflict again without making it seem too similar to Dawn and War

tribal wind
#

This is the neutral term

#

Second movie might be frictional terms

#

Then they end on a high note

#

I HOPE

pulsar bronze
#

Mae and Noa kiss, love binds the species together

#

Lmao

tribal wind
#

I wanted a hug!!!

#

FOR NATURE!!!

calm fern
#

WHEN NOA WAS SPEAKING WITH MAE AT THE END OMG

tribal wind
#

šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

pulsar bronze
#

Girl was holding a gun I don’t think there was any chance of a hug

tribal wind
#

She’s human

#

At the end of it

calm fern
tribal wind
#

Maybe less so bc of everything but ya

tribal wind
pulsar bronze
#

||Also oh my god when Mae kills the guy I literally sat up lol||

tribal wind
#

My sensible area in my heart

#

Where I question humanity and existence

#

Kicked in

#

😭😭😭

#

That was when the movie became gritty

calm fern
#

When the fucking apes ||found that kids book with them in cages and she comes in right after|| LIKE BROOO

tribal wind
#

I gotta rewatch that scene

#

I didn’t get it at first

pulsar bronze
#

This film has such a good score too

#

the swelling at the end was so good

tribal wind
#

One of the best movies of the year

pulsar bronze
#

Also the way I wished death on Proximus and his henchmen so fast when they blasphemed Caesar’s name

#

lol

tribal wind
#

THE BANGING AND THE SCORE MUSIC

#

SOOOO EPIC

#

His villain intro was something else

calm fern
#

BRO I LOVED THE ORANGATANG SO MUCH

pulsar bronze
#

Raka šŸ’”

calm fern
#

Maurice and Ceasar would have been so proud

pulsar bronze
#

||I was so sure he’d be ā€œsurprise im not deadā€ because yk that’s the trope||

tribal wind
#

That dude ā€œdiedā€ so fast

#

I have a feeling he’s not dead at all

pulsar bronze
#

Maybe he returns in the next film

||Or he’s just dead just like that||

tribal wind
#

He just got taken away by water

pulsar bronze
#

Also, you can tell a film’s well written when you get attached to characters so fast lol

calm fern
#

I fucking love that Noe now gets to spread the word of Ceasar to his clan

tribal wind
#

The film’s writing also showed how clever it is when ONLY the climb tree apes survived the dam

#

The eagle ones

pulsar bronze
#

||Him giving Mae the pendant was so bittersweet||

tribal wind
tribal wind
#

And he should only continue to get better

calm fern
tribal wind
#

His side characters need to get better tho

#

Not that they were bad

#

But be up to par

pulsar bronze
#

||I feel like the way this is gonna go is another human-ape war that only ends when something happens involving Mae and Noa||

||The way this film ends, they really are going to be the main catalysts of things.||

tribal wind
#

If the female ape (starts with an S) is his wife, and the other is his best friend, then they SHOULD ALL be a force to be reckoned with in the future

They have a better foundation to build and work on this time starting the trilogy unlike the other trilogy who’s other characters some of them felt improvised and forced as they carried on.. and even then they were good, but these are MULTIPLE FULL FLEDGED characters that are part of what makes a trilogy of movies PERFECT

calm fern
#

I'm so scared of ||Mae and Noa being adversarial in the next movie. Especially when Noa says that he's gonna rebuild his clan to be stronger and better||

tribal wind
tribal wind
tribal wind
#

Sadly Matt Reeves is too busy with Batman. But that’s a practically masterpiece trilogy in process too. (Or duo of movies)

pulsar bronze
#

I feel like 5 will have a bleak/bad ending

#

6 will have a more hopeful one perhaps

#

Either that or its gonna be a ā€œhistory repeats itselfā€ type of thing

tribal wind
#

They both are old asfudge and I am not interested in the old ones

#

I hate old movies

#

But I can watch them

#

Just I prefer to avoid them tbh

tribal wind
#

To the point they tried to update it with a sequel millions of years later and it couldn’t keep up or reach

pulsar bronze
#

May or may not see this again tomorrow lol

#

I'm reading reviews that this movie is slow paced, and the end was anticlimatic

#

calm fern
pulsar aurora
#

No spoilers
the third movie had the most character depth because of the time spent with Cesar+his supporting cast it’s the culmination of his character arc, so they can delve into some interesting places with him and some of the other characters.

For the fourth movie, I prefer this story to the other 3– note if you’ve watched the previous 3 recently especially the third it is quite rewarding ||there are subtle and on the nose references, my favorite was regarding what happened to humans based on the ramifications of the third movie it’s not explicitly stated but a portion of what the 3rd movies antagonist feared came true to humans||, as a whole I enjoyed this one more than the other 3, the cgi is amazing some of the best I’ve seen other than avatar 2, the locations are cool as well. Note the characters in the 4th movie are obviously not going to be as deep as the 3rd but if this movie is to be viewed as an intro movie to a new trilogy it’s done better as an intro movie than the (2011) one. Also got heavy avatar 2 vibes for some reason. Note if the reboot series ends with this movie I would be extremely disappointed.

I could see arguments made for this being 3/5 on the low end (if you are not invested in the story/world building certain parts will drag)and 4/5 high end. For me it was a 4/5

pulsar bronze
#

For me it shall be anywhere from 4.5-5

plush wharf
#

did anyone else feel like there was just too much dialogue

#

like who gave the apes a dictionary lmao

umbral ledge
#

the movies conflicting imo the movie looks and sounds incredible but the movie was way too fucking long and the plot is kind of bad imo so in the original trilogy the apes were the main characthers they set up stuff for the apes in the next movie but now it sets up the humans instead. Also the movie feels too disney imo also the human charcthers for the females wear a shirt and makeup while the men dont wear a shirt just pants so its pg13 which is distracting af also the third act was so they can flez on water effects. At least they didnt spoil the fact that the girl can speak

My review of the movie

I had a gigantic problem with this film, and that is talking humans, the 3rd movie was awesome in that humans were going to be mute to lead perfectly into the 60s film, but this film negates that with military tribes not infected by that virus or something

strange portal
#

||do you guys think there might be another war with the humans||

long herald
# calm fern people can't sit through long movies anymore

Because time is very valuable and you have to know what amount you're looking at, I enjoyed fall guy, Oppenheimer and the Mario movie more because of its faster pacing and relevances. A lot is happening, instead of padding shots of people walking, and starring around that leads to nothing.

Fall guys camera work angles AND cuts were good

long herald
# calm fern tiktok brains lmao

Never used tiktok, and rarely watch shorts, probably because of anime mentaility, from its pacing.

If there are so much padding to scenes, it's completely low effort, and time consuming to sit through

calm fern
glass sedge
#

Many people forget this but Rise, Dawn and War were also very slow as far as pacing goes. War in particular was advertised as a "final battle between humans and apes" but it's actually just a slow prison break film. These are not very action-oriented movies and they don't have to be

I just think there could be other issues that that poll has, sample bias, response bias, online polling. Using that data is limited to its sample size of 2000 Americans, does that make sense to use that to represent the entire population. My ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…Ā½ review of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on Letterboxd https://boxd.it/6sjqJp

A new story begins in the world of the apes, carefully built and enriched by the trilogies helmed by the creatives with Matt Reeves. like he was a good villain and that’s what kinda disappointed me

I wish he was in the movie MORE

#

the dinner scene was genuinely excellent

he was downright SCARY in that scene

really intimidating and you really felt his presence over the movie

pulsar bronze

I loved this film so much lol

Wes Ball was finally given a good script to direct! Good for him

#

I love the dynamic with Mae and Noa

pastel magnet

Ngl, Mae's my favourite human in the series

fair, she’s really cool

#

it was really surreal seeing other apes talk fluently

#

at least these cgi ones

#

but I got used to it eventually

pulsar bronze
#

It was yeah, worked very well imo.

pastel magnet
#

I think this movie’s coolest attribute is that it was just really intriguing

seeing ape society and the new world they’re in was very interesting

pulsar bronze
#

I was glad we spent a good amount of time exploring that

I loved the design of Noa's clan's village

pastel magnet
#

the one thing I’m VERY VERY happy about is that they didn’t try to do some twist villain shit with Proximus

#

it would’ve given him even less time to be a villain than he already has

pulsar bronze
#

I don't see how they could've done it here tbh

pastel magnet
#

that’s what I thought they were going for at first

pulsar bronze
#

Like, just associating the apes attacking the village with him was enough for me to be like "yeah that confirms baddie"

pastel magnet
#

like he’d try to convince Noa he’s not really that bad!!! oh what happened to your dad was a big oopsie!!! and then he’d end up betraying him

pulsar bronze
#

Ahh

pastel magnet
#

I’m glad it didn’t go that route
would’ve made Noa seem like an idiot

#

it’s cool that he knows right away yeah no

he’s talking shit

Lol yeah that would've harmed Proximus' character

its a case of religious manipulation is what it is basically. Manipulating an old text to your desires.

pastel magnet
pulsar bronze
#

I forgot the context of my second line there but just talking about Proximus' character lol

and ahhh

pastel magnet
#

I think Proximus is a good villain
just wish he had WAY more screen time

#

or was at least built up more throughout the movie

pulsar bronze
#

Rip Raka also

pastel magnet
#

right

#

always the best characters that die

#

I think if you’re born an orangutan in this universe you’re just automatically a real one

pulsar bronze
#

We didn't see a body so maybe he returns next film tbf

pastel magnet
#

that would be crazy

pulsar bronze
#

Also oh my god

When I saw this for the first time the opening scene(before time jump) made me cry because I had JUST finished the trilogy 2 hours prior for the first ever time lol

pastel magnet
#

ugh ikr

#

and every time they mentioned Caesar I couldn’t help but grin

#

even in death the KING gets his respect

#

Caesar is just him

pulsar bronze
#

It also fuelled more anger from me towards Proximus and his henchies when they made such misuse of his name

pastel magnet
#

that’s another thing that I wish they went into more

#

I never really got HOW they twisted his words other than ā€œwe do bad stuff we get weaponsā€

#

I would’ve loved to see more in depth ideology

#

that’s an inversion of what Caesar was going for

or a perversion of ā€œkill not kill apeā€ and stuff

#

in the movie he just kinda says what Caesar said but he’s EEEEEVVIIIILLL

pulsar bronze
#

I think we're definitely going to get more of that ideology play in Apes 5

#

As much as I loved Kingdom, it is the setup film of this trilogy

pastel magnet
#

tbf we never saw Proximus’ body

#

sooo

calm fern
pastel magnet
#

I mean it was a pretty lethal fall after some lethal injuries but

it’s not impossible

pulsar bronze
#

True

And if Noa can survive the fall he did im pretty sure Proximus of all apes will survive too

#

So when I first saw the film, it was in a room with recliner seats

I was reclined a lot of the movie. Until towards the end of the second act, when Mae, Noa et al. are setting the explosives up and Mae fucking kills the guy when she realizes he's going to rat them out. I sat the fuck up lol

That was such a scene and i hadnt seen it coming

#

The gun at the end too

pastel magnet
#

OH and that guy too
another character I wish we could’ve gotten more of

#

feels very wasted

pulsar bronze
#

i think his character was mainly there to be a contrast to Mae honestly. Two humans at opposite ends of the ideological spectrum.

pastel magnet
#

yeah
wish we could’ve gone more into that
his reasons why
his backstory
etc

pulsar bronze
#

Honestly still struggling to rank this film in the quadrilogy thus far

#

Rise is last place for me

pastel magnet
#

I’d put it behind Rise but not by much

#

just a smidge behind it

pulsar bronze
#

Gotcha

pastel magnet
#

I think my rating is 3 1/2 or 4 stars

pulsar bronze
#

Rise is the only one of the 4 that i didn't give a 5/5 lol

pastel magnet
#

probably 4

#

then there’s Dawn and War that are both built different

ebon tinsel
#

would've had more opportunity of that if they didn't kill off Raka

#

or kill him off in the kingdom

pastel magnet
#

In that movie’s universe is Cesar as much of a legend as Hercules from Greece is in the real world?

#

I think he might be.

#

Except maybe more is known about Cesar.

#

No one knows for sure if Hercules existed or not.

#

It’s the same with Cesar in that world right?

limpid flower
#

#

Only real issue I had was that the humans seem to remember the old world like it was a few years ago but the apes treat it like centuries. The opening title also says "Generations later"

pastel magnet
lusty fern
#

I find it hard to believe some humans stayed okay with intelligence after a hundred+ years

pastel magnet

#

yeah that part sticks with confusion cause its just not explained after they imply they all just become mute in the last one

lusty fern
#

Yeah the antagonist literally said "everyone has the simian flu"

pastel magnet
#

it’s really odd how the entire point of War was that humans are animalistic now

#

and that’s kind of out the window

#

I get what they’re going for but it’s REALLY weird

pastel magnet
#

I’d say less myth and more legend in Caesar’s case

#

I mean Hercules is both, right?

#

I wouldn’t be able to tell you but at least to my understanding

#

a myth is fictional

#

The thing about Hercules is that no one knows for sure if the guy existed or not.

#

That's why he's a myth.

#

whereas a legend is more a retelling of a real story

#

a thing that’s known to be true

#

So in that universe there is evidence Cesar really existed right?

#

Tell me honestly is comparing Ceasar to Hercules an apples to oranges comparison?

pastel magnet
#

all of that says to me that he’s pretty well accepted as fact

#

most apes accept that he was real

#

So it is an apples to oranges comparison right?

#

I suppose, yeah

#

because in Caesar’s case there’s not much dispute that he was real

#

like the apes seem pretty certain of it

#

it’s not like a myth where it COULD have happened but was unlikely

#

and most people don’t see it as real

#

I really like the movie’s worldbuilding

#

how Caesar affects the apes on many levels

#

From my experience there is no agreed on opinion. People aruge all the time about whether Hercules really existed or not.

#

not always in obvious ways

pastel magnet
#

because clearly if enough people think something is real

there’s got to be a reason why

#

but exaggeration and misinformation can explain the more bonkers part of a story

#

that don’t make sense in real life

#

This is one of my favorite movies of the year, btw. I mean the kingdom of the planet of the apes.

#

I love the hell out of it.

#

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Loch Ness Monster is a similar case

#

something real that got exaggerated or misunderstood

pastel magnet
pastel magnet
#

Right.

#

stories never come from NOTHING

#

all art is based in reality to an extent

#

or at least our perception of reality

pastel magnet
#

And just make up completely fictional characters

#

I don’t see how something can exist entirely original of anything else

#

like
as a writer I find it impossible to create something born from literally nothing

#

You have a good point.

#

Even if a character is not based on a real person, there are still some inspirations from the real world or other media.

#

yeah that’s what I meant

#

it’s what I was saying like

even the most fantastical thing can be linked to something else, to the person creating it, or the world it was created in

#

ideas are built on other ideas

#

and those ideas are built on the world and our perception of it

#

our lives through it

#

I find the idea of completely original art absurd but that’s for another day

ANYWAY WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY RAAAA

#

APES TOGETHER STRONG!!!!!

ebon tinsel
#

don't dislike them still talking cause i kinda did like how I felt subverted expectations when Mae started talking, but I dislike that they don't explain how she is

pastel magnet
#

yeah that’s my issue too

#

it comes across as more contradictory to War rather than expanding on it

#

to me it feels like

ā€œthe virus now causes humans to become less intelligentā€

#

ā€œā€¦. except for these humansā€

#

at least in Dawn there was the explanation that some humans were immune

#

but like

#

are they just immune to the lethal aspects of the virus???

#

or do they become stupid even if they’re immune???

#

are some people immune to that too???

#

idk how they would’ve explained it in the script but

#

it’s really weird

#

maybe I’m missing something here

ebon tinsel
#

like, they avoided it, or they evolved to be immune to it etc

#

but nothing was said

pastel magnet
#

but again

if some humans are immune does the virus still affect their mind despite the immunity

#

because if that’s the case

are the intelligent humans in Kingdom ā€œimmuneā€ to the mind changing part too????

#

The main villain of the movie, Proximus Caesar would you guys compare him to Hitler? I would. He wants to genocide humans which is similar to what Hitler was aiming for with certain groups of people.

#

Oops

#

Got the wrong character.

#

I will edit the comment when I find the right onw.

#

Nevermind I got the right one.

#

since Proximus specifically calls himself a ā€œKingā€ the connection to fascism is a little shaky (as far as I know) but there’s elements of that ideology there

#

Maybe he's more comparable to the ancient Egyptian kings then.

#

it’s a little iffy to call something fascism because a lot of people jump to that instantly whenever they see a dictatorship of any kind

#

Ok I'm probably just being dumb then.

#

when an absolute monarchy (like the Kingdom in the movie) is technically a dictatorship

pastel magnet
#

you aren’t dumb dw 😭

#

but yeah Proximus does have a cool thing that’s at least IMPLIED in the movie

#

that being that he twists Caesar’s words

#

we all twist the words of who we look up to

#

to our own perception

#

and that’s not a bad thing

it’s just that Proximus uses it to justify awful stuff

#

it’s an interesting trait that I wish they did more with

#

since I watched the movie

icl

#

I’ve grown to appreciate Proximus more

#

sure it kinda sucks that he gets very little screentime at all

#

but his presence over the movie is still REALLY felt

yay not alone in it

#

I feel weird asking for more on caesar

#

because this is kinda becoming its own thing separated from him

#

but i think its like, if you are gonna introduce this mythological figure who has some impact and influence, it should have more paved for it

#

like maybe a convo with Noa and Proximus where he acknowledges and talks about the Caesar before him

My ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…ā˜… review of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on Letterboxd https://boxd.it/6ujOLn

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY! While Kingdom moves away from the character-driven drama the previous trilogy went with, and the absences of that drama can definitely be felt here, the lasting effects of Caesar's legacy can be felt from the very start of the film. The cold open in question was actually quite emotional, showing us the funeral of Caesar wit...

I think the main villain of the movie Proximus Caesar is comparable to Hitler.

I don't think he legit hates humans. I think he's only using them as a scapegoat to excuse his massive genocide as Proximus only wants power.

I don't think he really cares that humans are causing trouble.

He looks like a power hungry dictator to me.

Well yes the names are the same but these movies are meant to be more ā€œrealisticā€ than doing time travel. It also wouldn’t make sense since the original movie’s time travel affected the events that led up to the first movie. In that series we also see Caesar and he also stages the same rebellion. I can’t imagine why use time travel other than being a movie about trying to stop a virus kinda like Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys
