I'm 4 episodes in
this is a gorgeous show
filming in BW really made every frame a painting
Reminds me of Scott's character in Spectre personality-wise
combined with slow pacing and showing every little detail it has a strong noir/hitchock paranoia vibe
it might be too slow even
Filming in BW gives it an edgy aesthetic and love that
I'm not convinced Scott was the best pick, he's a great actor but a bit old for the part
maybe in the second part the character will gain more confidence
Maybe. I'm resisting binging it rn
Third episode includes 20 min sequence ||of Greenleaf's murder|| and it gets a bit slapstick
Looking forward to it

@plucky frigate
WHAT A BLATANT LIE, ANDREW
YOU'RE GAY AND EUROPEAN
literally everybody in the audience
Yes, but it's not exactly suspensful
Yeah, it's very slow and meticulous
cool
First episode was a slow burn but loved it, cinematography is fantastic. Also this is my first exposure to anything Ripley related, so gonna be interesting to watch further.
Breakout star of the show
That cat is surely majestic
The actor who plays Freddy is shit compared to Phillip Seymour Hoffman - doesn't hold a candle to him
3rd episode.. ||that boat scene was quite funny ||
Finished Ripley on Netflix and I thought it was a fantastic show. I went into the show having not read the book or watched the movie and hence the ending ||with Ripley getting away was quite surprising to me||.
The cinematography with Black and white visuals were just amazing. The performances esp from Andrew Scott as Ripley was great. The show also had a Hitchcockian feel to it in some ways, some moments were quite tense too. I do think Ripley got ||very lucky on numerous occasions and he was quite clumsy many times. ||. Regarding the finale I ||don't think the disguise was that believable but it was dark and the thing that bugged me was the inspector not looking at picture of real Dickie earlier||.
I think this is already one of my top shows this year.
I think it absolutely is imo at least..
kk
i also thought it was excellent, though with a few glaring plot holes, which i guess are in the source material. the biggest is ||that the italian newspapers reporting on this juicy story of a handsome american playboy who disappeared would obviously immediately print pictures of dickey that they would get from his photographer girlfriend, who has lots of pictures of him||
That was one of my main problems as well
i'm really glad that, like you, i hadn't watched the matt damon movie or any other adaptation. probably reading the book would be the only comparable experience to the miniseries
oh lol i didn't realize this is a whole ripley thread. nice
Yes it is but not many are watching it
Same.. went into the show blind without knowing anything
It's def less impactful for those who have seen the movie - pretty much plays out exactly like the show in movie form
Ya, there's not much element of surprise
they are late. cats have been casted frequently in horror movies for a long time
Ok this show mightâve completely lost me
@wild barn Bro either the inspector is the most incompetent detective on the planet or this show relies on an insane amount of contrivances to keep Tom from getting caught by cops. Iâm guessing itâs the latter. The disguise scene makes ABSOLUTELY ZERO SENSE considering Tomâs voice is IDENTICAL and you can clearly tell itâs the same person.
Realistically, the whole thing would be solved with a picture of Dickie Greenleaf which multiple people have access to, so none of this makes sense. Itâs becoming laughable tbh.
The inspector would 100000% know that heâs talking to the same person - beyond stupid
Unless heâs blind which he clearly isnât
The inspector legit could have just said âdescribe his appearanceâ to Dakota but I guess thatâs too much
Her character is a complete fucking idiot
And acts like no human being would
The writing becomes a mess loaded with contrivances and ridiculous conveniences
If she showed him a single picture of her fiancĂ©e especially considering how sketchy she thinks Tom is (and says it multiple times), the case wouldâve been solved in an instant
And they even prove thatâs the case with the final inspector scene it makes no sense
So yeah by the end massive waste of time
Technically? Brilliant
But story wise? This shouldnât get a pass
Ripley is just very lucky but yes that whole not showing picture of Greenleaf bugged me too and regarding that disguise.. there was low lighting and yes not inconceivable that the inspector is gonna be fooled.. again, have to suspend disbelief in shows sometimes.
One thing I loved though was the show shows how difficult it is to actually get rid of the body, many other movies make it so easy.
I think there's a point at which luck becomes contrivance and this show surpassed it multiple times imo - I can't suspend that much disbelief when everything about the world is so grounded (like you said, it shows how challenging and time consuming it is to get rid of a dead body)
And even taking the low lighting into consideration, their voices sound identical AND Tom's pretty close to the inspector when he says goodbye
The inspector never had any doubt about Ripley being Greenleaf though and he missed quite a bit, it doesn't bother me as it is a show.
Also I'm glad that this show is set in 1961 when it wasn't that hard to do identify theft with the passport and stuff. Ripley also got unlucky though when the inspector found out identity of Miles even though Ripley took out the passport.
It goes back to a photograph solving the case and there are multiple points where characters would've realistically seen a photograph
The newspapers would've attached a picture of Dickie Greenleaf (he's an American playboy whose gone missing and is suspected of murder)
Again, you gotta suspend disbelief in these shows sometimes, I also never watched The talented Mr Ripley movie or read the book and so I didn't know Ripley was gonna get away.
this is a very regal cat.
Yes it is
I just finished this series. I really enjoyed it, some parts werenât believable as others but thatâs down to happen with a show like this. I loved the cinematography, it was all very visually pleasing. This show gave me a lot of anxiety which i adored and felt some great suspense throughout the episodes. All around a good show
I agree and ya some parts weren't believable but that happens in all TV shows
exactly. I really enjoyed the show besides that so it doesnât ruin it for me
great show
Ripley relies on dozens of contrivances to work as a show, hence why it fell flat for me
