Minus Color is the SUPER limited edition, I'd say you lucked out, since that's at the moment the preferred version

If rumors it to be trusted, it’s also a repolish and color treatment not just a regrading into black and white… they didn’t just turn saturation to zero, so to speak, so it will be the definitive version to pay homage to the 70th Anniversary of the original Godzilla.

And the aftermath of it all, the raining blood and the supposed death of Noriko was terrifying

Even in black and white it was more terrifying

More on the human side

I felt really emotional towards Koichi

Godzilla's BODY is moved slightly to the right, and the boat is moved slightly to the left, all the fins' blurs are redone, along with parts of the blur going into the face, and the water also moved a little... like... who DOES that? lol

Human skins, clothing, papers, etc would be instantly turned to ash.

Assuming they did the same treatment as the machine gun muzzle smoke on the Minus Color version (turning it dark, as it would be if shot for real, instead of bright) with the ash, it would look DEVASTATING

Either way, Minus One has better nuke effect than Oppenheimer

Fun exercise of just DESATURATING the original footage from Minus One, and using 50% CONTRAST, can more of less definitely prove that they layer graded.
The top was just desat and contrast, bottom is Minus Color.

Ouside of the vignetting, which I didn't try to play with, it might "feel" not that different, but it's "texturally" different.. and that adds up.

Frame-by-frame, it's actually SUPER noticeable.

Also a fun observation, at least from the footage released... Minus Color isn't actually PURE Black and White... it's a cooler, more retro black and white that emulates color-scanning/remaster of old black and white film inside the color colorspace. So the film isn't actually a Black and White film, it's accurately "minus color".

The black and white allows you to focus more on the score and the lurking presence instead of the details, which make it feel way more terrifying. It also feels like a pure homage throughout to '54, and I am pretty sure there was a new, or possibly better accentuated, moment that felt directly pulled from '54

I can’t remember in the Color version, just like I didn’t notice the machine gun smokes in the Color version, but that muzzle smoke was there as soon as I desaturated (was hard to see in the Color version)… maybe it’s the same thing, or maybe they redid that effect, because I didn’t remember it off the Color.

Also whoever thinks it’s blood after the boom in Ginza, I think that’s condensed soot… but again, need to rewatch the COLOR version when it comes out lol

Estimate is sometime end February, but that’s based on North American releases, Japanese are horribly slow sometimes, especially now that Toho is allowed to own theaters in Japan again that it may try to squeeze it. There’s no official word yet.

Well, as far as we know... or don't know... we have no idea what sexe Godzilla really is... the original writer said "probably male" in an interview iirc, the original Japanese film (in original Japanese) always called it an "it" (but "he" in the original English dub)... and in the NA version he/she/it ||laid eggs||.... as well as ||split cells|| in Shin, and of course there's ||Minizilla||.... so in my mind it reproduces asexually, hence calling it he/she/it are probably technically all correct.

I have only ever seen ONE Godzilla movie and it was THIS ONE and I loved it so much. It was a truly human story of coping and survivial and it was a beautiful and trying love story as well. I have thought about seeing other Godzilla movies but some say this one is unique like that. I dunno. I am tempted to watch others. What would anyone here rec if you have seen others?

The original Godzilla, 1954; Godzilla vs Biollante, 1989; Shin Godzilla, 2016; they all have a bit more silliness in places, at different scopes, obviously, than Minus One, but remains my top picks for solid human drama.

Oscars always look at VFX through Quality, Quantity, Effort, Innovation. Creator satisfied 2, Godzilla satisfied 3, simple as that.

Oscar “best” isn’t “best looking”, never was.

As far as to “earned it”, Godzilla earned it by pure audacity of effort alone, and all of the nominees earned it for different reasons, one can argue for any one of them to win.

Both films represented paradigm shifts in pure post production processes on a professional level. One is by shooting FOR effect but not doing excessive plates, reference shots, and shot planning, instead relying on the technology and the artists to replace things accurately, which would’ve been impossible just 2 years ago. The other used small team mentality and modular tools and tech as well as smart story and shot planning to achieve the quality and quantity of something 10 times more expensive, another thing that is impossible just 2 years ago. They literally used opposite strategies in many places that matters to the artists at the office.

Besides, Godzilla simply has a better story, which makes it more memorable when time comes for people to vote, not to mention that people loves an underdog story. Neither of those are “on effects”, but absolutely affected the vote.

At the end, it comes down to the desire of almost every effect artist (who are the ones who votes for the category, remember) to work in a tightly knit team rather than a cog in a system.

I've read up some under 3 star reviews of this film, and I just don't get how Minus One gets targeted here, I feel like this film fully respects the OG '54 film, and I get it Godzilla may not have that much screentime and we have to pivot to care about the fictionalized post WWII Japan setting but that's what makes the film so authentic and real to me, and isn't that what Godzilla films are all about? There's also one I read about how this film doesn't feel Japanese at all...

Yeah but Yamazaki knows that a Hollywood budget and system is not something he's quite ready for... he's almost an auteur at this stage, with the way he worked on Minus One... the complete package. How many Hollywood directors you know (even if they came from post-production) jumped in to COMPOSIT SHOTS themselves?

Tim Miller on Deadpool too I think… but as far as fully jumping in and managing individual members (instead of the pipeline), I do think Yamakazi did the most of these 3.

On the Deadpool Test Footage, I think he did serve as his own post supervisor, but not Deadpool movie itself iirc.
