Technically the toad that hit the bird cage did just that… 👀
He's strong enough to lift the piano and drop it on himself
Not enough damage I guess
Hmm, and we know that Mario just loses powers from simple falling
Unfortunately it isn't the statistic I wanted for worldwide statistic for each daily earnings.
Found this very interesting question
Absolutely
Not with those Pakkun Flowers I won't
would nuke a nearby country and sacrifice hundreds To impress me
Idk guys he screams best boy material
Babygirl
Wish we got a cliche dream montage of guy dreaming about stuff he would do with dream girl
But with bowser and peach
Bowser doing the most horrid stuff while being happy with peach
GWEN AS YOUR PFP💕
YES I love her :3
Wears pointes as fashion statement, girl after my own heart… forget Morales
Lol
Take that Frozen
boooyah
That's when they show Jr being their unholy love child
Yeah, probably
And how good is it that it reaches the top 100?
Pretty good, I guess
Well, people are starting to go in for seconds, like we are tomorrow night… the numbers will be climbing
Top 100 is more or less assured… Frozen II is on 13th, as the highest animated film… the question is if it can beat THAT
Hop it does!
Better not beat out Shrek Forever After
I mean, it changes nothing about the quality of that or mario
It doesn't change the fact the movie has thin plot, is incredibly fun, is nostalgia fuel... AND the most successful video game adaptation to date
That said... Mortal Kombat consistently makes fun adaptations, and Street Fighter, well... Kylie Minogue as Cammy
I know for a fact video game adaptations are now the hot new trend.
Minecraft, FNAF, Mortal Kombat 2, others studios are in the process of negotiating film Deals for other video games as we speak
Soon there'll be a Crash Bandicoot movie, then a Duke Nukem movie, then a Banjo-Kazooie movie
Personally the latter two would be things I'd be down to see if they're done well
||Among us||
Holy shit i never even considered them
I can see it being a kid friendly version of "The Thing"
The Thing for tiktok generation: The Rizz
My idea is that it would be a horror sci fi who dunnit comedy
Maybe there's a mystery creature and the whole crew have to find out who it is. The killers would of course have their own motive and a shocking twist reveal at the third act
Like scream basically but in space
And amongus
An Undertale movie would also be cool
Off topic but I really wish Tetris had had a theatrical release because imagine the insanity it could have caused when paired up with the Mario movie
It actually sounds good ngl
OH NO
Big facts
Super Mario Bros. would be a decent film, if it didn't have the brand attached to it...
Then which ranking makes it "good"?
I already seen it twice lol, and I really want to see it for the 3rd time for the Dbox, action and renditions of the osts.
The fast pacing just makes it a fun re-watch, despite the story being too simplistic.
Simplistic is an understatement, but it's a fun ride to be sure, perfect for theaters
Princess Peach!
Despite the fact the Princess Peach is a total unit in this movie, the feminists are still raging.
Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches, Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches, I looooove you!!!!!
Feminism isn't wrong... it's the 1% of the people who takes it too far that is....
Oh dont worry, i meant the 1%.
Of course i'm all for gender equality.
Remember, WE are here, the 1% of people who "takes watching movies" a little too far lol
Right.
What
We're very much not raging I don't think
I dunno, i've seen some say that Peaches doesent properly represent or something...
She didnt beat Bowser. Yah, that's the complaint.
Well, doesnt Mario usually beat Bowser in the game? So, since its a Mario movie, of course Mario will have the last fight
I know,right?
But they wanted her to be the star of the movie.
Some people, not everyone.
Well, thats their fault
And um.. I’m fully confident that Peaches would’ve beaten Bowser EVENTUALLY on her own, Mario just helped speed things along, honestly
At least, this version of Peaches is amazingly GOATED
The Super Mario movie opened up in Malaysia yesterday.
Any numbers yet?
I heard they censorship everything there
It opens in 7 days in Japan, but that market is really hard to gauge
Hard to find fault with Mario to sensor tho?
Just wanted to say it lol
Hahaha
This one is for my one and only true love, Princess Peach. (Sing along)
I keep thinking he's saying "pizza" in that song like that SpongeBob bit
@umbral nova no idea, I just saw it on YouTube.
I don't think Mario will pull off much numbers in Japan. Given how all western studio films don't get much out of Japan .
Yes, but it’s Mario, and they played the trailers on the news there
The only reason it started late was to avoid bumping into Doraemon, one of the few bigger IP than it in Japan
So.. safe to say, even if the sequel fails, there are still chances that they would make a 3rd one?
It won't because there will be KD, Luigi, Captain Toad for the kids... who knows what else
Yes
Is that a drive thru?
Nice, I went to a Drive-in when a watched the Mario Movie.
The last movie I saw there was Tom and jerry
You too? Awesome
Interestingly enough not as bothered by Cranky Kong the second time around
Drive-IN
The screen is wayyy too small I’m not sure how you’d focus
Well Cybor put on a Family Guy compilation on his phone so he could focus
Ahh well that I can get behind
‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE’ has passed $800M worldwide.

Again, the target to beat is Frozen 2, at 1.453bil
As with any photography, things further away feels extremely small
Guardians of the galaxy seems like it will be taking away that possibility of it getting 1.453 billion though
I'm both
Welp... I watched it the 3rd time yesterday, it wasn't as fun as the first, but the 2nd could've been way more fun, if it weren't for my friends irresponsible time management.
I guess putting my head against the Dbox seat was not a great idea, but thought it would make a huge difference, only to wind up getting my head hurt at the back.
How was that dbox thing
Only theater sorta near us with that is all the way downtown
For the Mario movie, it was decent, but it really depends on which movie, the Avatar 2 was the worst I had with it, was lackluster and most of the time didn't fit the visuals, John wick only had one scene that was fun, the rest just felt underwhelming, the 2nd or maybe first best was One Piece Film red.
The kart scenes and action for DBox felt great and give you that adrenaline rush for the Mario movie.
So is it just like advance seats or something
It gives you the vibration and movements to give you the immersion of being in the movie
But Japanese cinemas already has this feature for all seats, smell, air impact and many others.
So theirs are way more advanced and immersive
Sure does turn rollercoaster ride movies even more so into rollercoasters
Yeah, that's what I meant by depending on the movie, if it's a movie like gravity, it will be very trippy.
The kart scenes just felt so fun
My first DBOX was one of the later Pirates films, kinda just a lot of swirling around lol
They are not THAT extreme, lol
If it still doesn’t work, try and try again
I've seen movies like One Piece Film red 20 Times, and each session completely varies in terms of experience, with energy, people, and sitting position.
Hang on, the $871 million box office right now counts with the Sunday online ticket sales?
Or is it accumulated up to Saturday for 871 million?
Likely, one things for sure, this one is gonna hit the one billion mark by the next two weeks
What I want more is the question whether or not it could surpass Frozen 2
1 Billion is out of the question now.
Huh
animal crossing 😔
I think only pre-sales are separated... online tickets counts toward the day of the screening
How is that even GOOD movie material lol
You mean 1 Billion is "Without Question" now... (Out of question is "no longer possible").... but yeah... it NEEDS to pass Frozen's 1.453b (or was it 1.435b)...
Anime
The story is essentially: "Homeless person gets blackmailed into moving into a nearly deserted island, became the only laborer on it, as whoever blackmailed the person force them to build it into a resort to pay for their arbitrary debt"....
THAT, won't break 500mil, mark my word
Oh so, people who buy the tickets through Kiosk, gets added with the box office total later? The second and 3rd week don't have as much as the first for online pre-sales, right?
Yeah my English isn't good, despite being a native speaker...
Totals don't come out till like... Noon the next day or something
I was just being an ass... don't worry about it lol
this is an awful way to watch a movie for the first time
like i enjoy drive-in theaters, but they're way better when rewatching an older movie
Wasn't the first time lol
oh whew, then nice
Seems like Guardians of the galaxy 3 is projected to flop in the box office, so the Mario movie might still make the cut.
How did you come to that?
Dont care if it does. Its the last GOG and it'll be enjoyable and emotional.
While I agree with Zelda to a certain extent, it is far from being as universally recognizable as Mario
Also a Smash Bros movie is not a good idea
Source: bro trust me
Well nevermind I went and looked up some articles, lol
I highly doubt GOTG3 is going to tank because of Super Mario. Seems like odd, unsubstantiated speculation.
Yeah the articles I read didn't list Mario as a reason either
The projections I've read put GOTG at $400M domestically, which... is common lmao
Yeah
But a far cry from previous phases
Not really. GOTG2 did $389M domestically
GOTG: $333M
People seem to forget international box offices are where it's at.
I donno, i think that it will make it regardless, just because it’ll likely be dug up for summer breaks and whatnot by the theaters
Cineplex will happily dig up Super Mario Bros for summer matinees haha
Oh i was referring to overall world wide gross
GOTG: $773M (total)
GOTG2: $869M (total)
We don't have an estimate for international.
$400M seems pretty well in line with the others for a domestic box office.
Exactly, it’ll be a cheap film to rent for them in another month or two, and which parents wouldn’t want to just dump a kid somewhere with their friends for an hour or two just for the occasional quiet?
We can sort of see the international market numbers as inflated, for a Hollywood produced film, because the economics is different, and that a much larger cut out of the profit goes to the international distributors and theaters than it does domestically… so say you make a dollar on each $1.10-1.12 domestically, you make that on each $1.40-1.50 internationally… still, it’s a gauge
It’s been pushed HARD, since I think Marvel knows that it’s essentially the only good film in the present phase… 400m domestic would be considered a flop imho
It costs probably close to 200m, so to WRITE IT OFF, it’ll take 400m. Internationally the studios would make 100-150m for itself, if it can match the 400m domestic… not a major return, but decent enough to not be a total flop.
That said, the staying power of Mario means that it’ll likely generate revenue easily all the way to the Christmas season… regardless of the theater:studio ratio favouring the theaters as time goes on… raw box office numbers don’t change.
Guardians 3, on the other hand, if probably going to be a single time event… so Mario beating it is a foregone conclusion… the question again is if it’ll beat Frozen 2’s 1.45b or Live Action Lion King’s 1.6b
Ohhhhh, so an article that uses "Source: bro trust me"
right on
quotes Yellow Flash
yeah the article can be tossed out
The thing about box office is that not even people on the high echelons really knows it… it’s really a high-risk high-return gamble
Guesswork all around
There was another article about it 11 days ago being a flop

Sportskeeda is a trash site, dont look into it too much
Yeah I found it after I asked that lol
Never been an MCU fan so if it does flop, I'll be happy
Or be happy anyways instead for waiting something to fail
I prefer positive energy into the universe, don’t be happy it failed, be happy it got made and people saw it
Thing is with the films are, stories never really have story depth, nor try to find new innovative ideas, negativity is important to set the standards for criticisms, in order to avoid wasting time on films that we might not like.
Mario was an exception for me, for its fanservice and fast pacing, despite that the story isn't good, Nintendo cooperated with illumination to fit in every single detail needed. Unlike 1993 Mario Movie.
True
Oh I have plenty of vitriol, I just don't like to unleash them lol
There's constructive criticism and negativity. When you get older, you'll find the difference and a perfect balance.
Life is too short to spend with so much hate in your heart. Tears you up
Yeah, people take movie watching way too seriously sometimes especially folks on this server
But I AM older lol... chanced are I'm older than you... but no.. wisdom does not always come with age... back pains does lol
Wasn't talking to you, bud
A lot of young folks however are inundated with doomer philosophy of just being continuously negative, thinking that it'll make a difference. All it does is rot your own heart and alienates everyone around you.
I may not be a fan of the MCU but I recognize that those films are putting food on crew's tables and that's what is important to me.
Precisely, and at least at the present time, it’s not like they are making megabucks, so they just keep people continuously employed
Saying you like the MCU has become a crime by now sadly lol
The main vitriol comes from, in my case, towards the MCU, is that they’ve been meandering since the spectacular Infinity War/End Game
I wouldn't say she's the best representative. Her thoughts are at least valid.
Saying 'MCU bad' and praying for its destruction is odd.
I personally have no stock invested in Disney, nor am i invested in the MCU post-Endgame but it keeps a lot of bellies full and lights on for many crew members in Atlanta so I'm alright with it.
I know, the whole thing against Disney as well… I mean it’s not as evil compared to some actually evil mega corporations
I mean, Disney is pretty damn evil so I'm not gonna defend them. I'm just standing by my fellow working-class brothers and sisters.
Not going to argue that they are NOT evil, because they are, but it’s like, a minor player as far as evil is concerned lol
Rooting FOR Mario doesn’t mean that I have to debase Disney is all I’m saying
(See? I circle back to the topic)
Can confirm about the doomer mentality, unfortunately
As I age, I’ve gone past that, I’m in the nihilistic stage
See, it a person dies, it’s a tragedy, a few thousand is a mourning, a few hundred thousands is a massacre…. But if the whole race goes, it only sucks to be the survivors lol
Durant supremacy
Or robot, or AI, or whatever alien… or natural/extraterrestrial disasters… we all gonna die
Anyhow… back to MARIO lol
It's a lot easier to empathize with one person than thousands
Just human nature, I think
Exactly, the weight of surviving a whole race is too much for the human brains to comprehend
I like the MCU.
So all funerals are sad is what you're saying.
No, it’s only sad when there are enough people to bury the dead.
My granddad died with a smile on his face. He figured: "Life is beautiful when you dont think about it too much." I suppose he might have been right.
Discussion about the MCU here always ends up spiraling into three-paragraph rants and arguing
I'm barely a movie guy, while I watch more anime, which I started dropping certain series more to save time.
Cool
Referring to me? Lol
Feeling bad if it fails is too harsh you're right
A better non-douchebag way to say it would be, I'm in-different
Wasn't talking about you hahah
Ah 😅
When mario flew threw them, they looked soft and liquid-y
More like Mushy I would say
Yeah basically
Mushio?
The Mario movie in Japan will have dialogues that are different from the west, that will fit their media.
Same with western pop music being replaced.
I wonder what music would be added in.
A DK spin off franchise is guaranteed. I am prepared for this announcement.
Oh, I love Nick Kroll
I can see Nick Kroll King K Rool sounding like a this but with a gruff British accent added onto it
https://youtu.be/meefffamv-c
I had a good laugh with this movie.
Confusion
Ik mario was created in japan but what
The series felt like it was always mainly made to be marketable to western audiences and especially the movie so
what does the movie benefit from being in japanese
I am nowhere near any of these places unfortunately
Sometimes they do buy normally on the 4k disc only
Ik 4k blu rays released by disney often put Japanese tracks, like my encanto 4k
but universal never puts anything but english, french, and spanish on their discs
It's nice to see alternate versions of them, especially when the text in them is different.
Hmm richmond huh..
Different music, slight change of dialogues to fit Japanese tradition and jokes, because if JP copied from the West's dialogue, everything would be awkward
Different music, huh?
Mario drowns his sorrows by getting a full combo on a 10-star Oni
Haven’t been to that cinema for 2 decades, not a bad idea
Why would they use Brooklyn, thunderstruck, kill bill and other western pop music to it?
Mario playing TAS on a Kaizo
Nobody’s gonna get that joke here except tech
I wonder what the they used over there, maybe AKB48.
Fr
I sure Hope not, probably 80s equivalent joke
Its such a damn shame I can't go 27km to my theater on Friday to watch JP, because I need to get braces
I could get the Japanese blu-ray, but there are no subtitles for it like the movie theater does.
Looks like so far only these dates in Vancouver
You don’t know that… a lot of the films are release with all the subtitles with Japanese Bluray… all my Ghibli ones does, région free too
I think they just figured that they were going to be too popular anyways, might as well just make one Bluray and put it in different packages lol
A very very large majority of movies made over here (basically films made originally in english) tho typically don't include Japanese tracks is the thing
So mario movie having Japanese on the disc is a small to no chance
importing a jp blu ray of it would probably be most optimal
Sony and wb 4ks have jp tracks but only for older movie releases, not newly released ones
once again, only English, French, and spanish
That's probably just the American side, idk
That’s what I meant… that it’ll likely have English version and English subs, even for Japanese Track
AS Japanese IMPORT
North America used to get the best DVD releases, then Bluray era hit; they realized they don’t have to be tryhards
Good thing I only care about video quality when it comes to blu ray/4k
Because yeah there's normally nothing special about them
Some don’t even have TRAILERS on them anymore… what would I watch were the AI take over and the INTERNET GOES KBLOOEY?
It's just infuriating, I still don't know why they won't show this at my local theater, because the other area near me are filled with a majority of Chinese, that would 100% watch this.
But instead it has to be in urban
chinese? you mean asian?
They make up 33% of the majority
Wait, no 50.
Japanese people only make up 0.01%, and Koreans way less than 1%
We would be waiting for Japanese Bluray or VOD it seems. Wife vetoed seeing the movie 3 times in theaters, and specifically for Japanese because son isn’t versed in the language
Do you think is worth it for me to pay $90CAD for an Uber ride for the JP version?
I have the fomo mentality
Because of subtitles
You do realize you have to pay that again to return home right
It's 45 and 45
Also, same reason my wife vetoed a 45min drive, because “it’s just a slightly different variant”
It’s not like it’s a slightly different VERSION, it’s just slightly different VARIANT.
Anyhow, 90+tickets doesn’t seem of value for me
It’s not THAT exciting, if you’ve already watched the movie
It's a total for a trip there and on the way back.
Which totals up to 90
I guess it's best for me to buy the JP Blu ray then. I owned JP anime Blu rays and they don't have any eng subtitles
I'll try to take the train.
The ultimate recap cartoon of The Super Mario Bros. Movie! Wahoo! Mario goes to the Mushroom Kingdom with his brother Luigi, Bowser sings a nice song for Peach and they all go on a nice kart ride on the rainbow road. What other Nintendo or Mario games should we recap next? Mario Galaxy? Mario Oddysey? 3D World? Breath of the Wild?
If you want ...

Hmm no box office data on Japan yet, probably will have day 1 by late afternoon (noon Japan-ish)
It's going to either be amazing or super underwhelming
My vote goes to underwhelming for them, seeing through JP YouTube, JP articles, and other social media.
They do not have much say about this at all.
They do a lot of things like this tho, city promo, less online
Youtube they do things like Hikakin and Seikin (two separate Youtube channels, who are brothers) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evlD3k7ZR5M

And they were shown trailers on the news
so it's a... I donno... I think they just have different promo style
Huh, well, damn, I hope i'm wrong then
We won
@half nymph I'll wait for the results and see for myself.
Mario sweep
Those people and critics make up a very very tiny minority of those who see and have interest in their films
That company knows how to make financial successful movies
Seems like Japan has an English version for Mario
All seats are sold out for the Mario movie in a theater for Japan.
@umbral nova Seems like it's a big hit in Japan.
Well
It doesn’t speak to quality does it
Also, a lot of sold outs
For the English one?
Subs are yellow, so almost sold out.
I'm already aware of that
Well you asked lol… but yeah, seems to be doing good business
I'm sure it'll still be in theaters all next month and most of June so it'll still make a lot
It’s apparently supposed to hit VOD soon, but I think they should wait
Honestly it's not the worst idea
They already made a crap ton from theaters
People are still talking about the movie so the momentum can continue more with a home release
The physical release is Dec 1st, so there will be a fair bit of Christmas gifting of it I’m sure
December 31st is always a placeholder date
We don't know officially when it's coming to disc
September 1st in Canada, I might’ve misread earlier
Pre-order has started on Amazon
Sep 1st sounds more realistic, considering the movie was April 5th
2-3 months theater exclusive, 1 month VOD chase up, 1 month physical
Then, about a month or 2 before Netflix
universal movies keep releasing at home and disc really quickly compared to other studios
cocaine bear already came out on blu ray last week despite coming out in February
Illumination and peacock has a deal with Netflix that it’ll send its film there for 10 month, about 6-7 months after release
But that’s a film that didn’t do nearly the business
Less the theatrical run box office, faster the VOD/streaming
Other universal movies that did big numbers like minions 2 and jurassic world 3 still came out like 2 months after release to blu ray
June--> August
July --> September
Yeah, 45-60 days
I never questioned in two of those posts though
I just gave two statements of what I saw from the pics
#1093094851672801341 message doesn’t matter tho, crosswires happens all the time online
The question, as always, is if they’ll beat frozen 2
Yeah but its not pulling a lot of numbers from China, for Frozen 2 its $100 million from China, and Mario is only $20 million.
Mexico for the win
I think (without verifying of course) they did more business day to day compared to Frozen 2
China is a VERY complicated issue... Disney at the time of Frozen 2, is still VERY cozy with the government, who controls EVERYTHING. And NO foreign distributors/studios had the kind of pull Disney had, once they fell out.
Now Universal has a decent amount of pull (nothing close to Disney in its hay-day, of course), but had to rely more on local distributors to put in the promos and secure the theaters/screen... instead of Disney, who used to be able to do it directly.
Post-Pandemic (and post-Disney fallout), there are less theaters (the lockdown was crazy there, a lot of theaters closed, and the numbers hasn't recovered), as well as less foreign film placements (because many reasons, chiefly one of intensification of nationalized patriotic works in theaters, but that'll take too long to get into here), so there's VERY slim chance of China hitting more than 50mil before VOD comes in...
However, China has a much larger number of people (both by percentage and by raw numbers) who are subscribers of the 2 main VOD/Streaming platforms (and it's FAR less confusing there, because of the government's limit on media distribution licenses), so it may boost that number quite a bit on VOD.
Sill, projection should be around 25-45mil for China, including VOD and streaming.
Ultimately, 50mil difference should be easily made-up from other markets, so I don't personally think that China would be a deciding factor on if Mario makes it past Frozen II.
The worry is more pandemic shift in media consumption habits, and people not going to theaters as much...
The pandemic caused a significant uptick in both large (more than 50inch) screen purchases, as well as audio playback purchases (specifically soundbars). People THINK they are getting a closer experience to theaters (they are of course WRONG), so they don't need to go to theaters anymore, especially with it "coming out on VOD/streaming in a couple of months" anyways.
Anyhooo... I'll stop ranting...
Ah, thanks for the clarification, I also had been paying attention to their policies and ways of doing things. But this is further proof and confirmation of that.
I will need to do re-reads on what you typed up.
THEY DID IT! 💥🍄
‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE’ crossed $1B at the worldwide box office.
It’s the 11th animated movie to reach that mark, and the first one since 2019 with ‘FROZEN II’.
Read our review: https://t.co/iAS6Di3tD5
I don't know how good it is for the retention and the pacing of the money earning, but I have doubts it could pass Frozen 2
Illumination Ichiban!!!
See? They just promote it differently over there, doesn't mean they didn't do any
1.7b yen = about 14mil, which is extremely good in Japan
Japan's 2022 box office champion was One Piece Movie: Red, which had a 16.6mil USD opening weekend, Mario just had a 14.4mil USD (not yet final though, so might still change)...
Japan's ALL TIME highest grossing film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, had a 31.4mil opening weekend.... both of the other films are also SUMMER releases, so there's a slight advantage there... the fact that Mario had a SPRING release (it's graduation season in Japan, so most of the target demographics would be rather busy, which puts it at a slight disadvantage) and still got anywhere close is a major feat by itself.
I've watched One Piece Film Red 20 times in theaters myself actually.
I was never a fan of demon slayer, i'm struggling to watch the swords smith arc.
But do those release timings really effect the pulls throughout its showtime span for 90 days? Is it because as time goes on, there will be new competitions and that the Mario movie will wind up moving to a smaller auditorium, with lower picture and speaker quality? @umbral nova
I don't think the enjoyment of Mario absolutely depend on the quality of the projection and sound system... but Japan is weird, as the MAJORITY of the theaters are either Aeon-related, Toho-related, or United/Cineplex-related, so as movies goes into second tier cities or below, they will occasionally get a bump for seemingly no reasons (I'm sure there are reasons, but it's beyond my knowledge) since a movie that makes money can stay in theaters almost as long as they want to.
With the local distribution partner being Toho-Towa (some new cinemas, but a lot of older ones), I think it'll play for a LONG time.
The key is that Japanese treats cinema still more like an "evening out" sort of thing, with some special occasion feel attached to it. So VOD and Streaming probably won't mess with the numbers that much, with some film still playing once or twice a week, or weekend as "babysitter", for more than 6 months... I think Mugen was 8 months, and One Piece: Red was 5.
Normal foreign films stays around 6 WEEKS though, I think... so it all depend on if Mario is considered Japanese or Foreign, and what the deals are between Universal/Illumination/Nintendo/Toho is regarding to long term profit.
Wait hang on, as you've said from before... Mario was put at a slight disadvantage for spring. But as of right now, they have a 1 week vacation for golden week. Students get these days off as well.
Right, but usually they are prepping for grad or end of year stuff, as well as various club activities for older teens... so it's still a disadvantage compared to the summer.
It's SAKURA season, after all...
this is by far Illumination's most expensive animated film
Nice
By FAR
No wonder my friend said that they will spend on the sequel as less as humanely possible.
Why would they? I mean, 20min difference was probably spent on Nintendo meeting and stuff anyways… which brings us back to the 80mil normal illumination budget
Unlike most industries where “bulk” generally means “cheaper”, film economics don’t really always work that way… tech is progressing all the time, and audience expectations is higher on a success. It stands to argue that hey would spend at least the same (which is arguably “cheaper” already due to inflations and actors/crew wanting to get paid more etc)
I'm just waiting for those YouTubers to make those "all mario references in the mario movie"
Give it a few weeks once the digital version is out
They already did, just based on theater… once digital comes out they’ll have still frames to support… I’m more interested in all the music YouTubers anyways
So much musical references in Mario
the reference video is gonna be longer than the movie
Ahhahaha naw… even a video essay of like… Dune, is not much longer than an hour and half
Omg that's literally him
@umbral nova The super Mario movie was illegally uploaded on Twitter for the full hour. And has 9 million views after it's taken down. Would that effect the box office?
The quality is probably still lame
“How many times a movie had been pirated” is becoming a new matrix of the popularity… and honestly, people who will watch a pirated film will always watch it pirated… people who prefer theater will always prefer theaters
OH GOD
HE'S REAAAAAL
ima see it when it hits digital
im saving my money on guardians 3
Got tix for Sunday
I'm pretty sure the 9 million figure for the twitter uploaded mario is how many people started the video. I bet around twenty people watched the whole movie on twitter because why would you?
Yup, it’s not like those people would’ve contributed to the box office one way or another anyways
watching something on twitter it was most likely people who already saw the movie and on the twitter thing they just skipped forward to rewatch Peaches, Peaches, Peahces a couple of times
Ahhaha
boneless lego movie. jack black was really good tho. one of the only ppl that fit their character lmao
good time to rec the original mario bros movie. it's actually decent
DND. i didn't watch it but mario's boring so
I was think about experiencing the iMax for Mario for my 4th watch
If you enjoy it that much, go ahead
Yeah, I regret so much watching DND.
Mario is more fun and memorable for me with the Easter eggs, osts, voice acting and etc.
I bloody loved this
Besides old man playing arcade, who else did the og mario VA voice
i still need to see
DnD also was filled to the brim with easter eggs
HD stills here we come
What are your favourite soundtracks for the Mario movie?
fr
End credit, because it’s LITERALLY just Mario music rearranged lol
Do you always watch through the credits?
When family isn’t being rush rush… can learn a lot from watching the credits. It’s also a form of respect.
Side note, in the soundtrack, the song is called Level Complete
ngl surprised more people dont with how many movies do credit scenes now lol
so many still walk out the moment credits stsrt
Again, family doesn’t usually like to stay, but I personally like to, even with films that doesn’t have any post credits.
i only leave early if im short on time
after movies i usually bus home
so if my bus doesnt line up to be after the credits
In terms of Mario, we can learn a lot about how many people on rigging, environments… how many people are in charge with communicating with Nintendo etc. I expect to spend more time with the credits once VOD is out.
Yeah its good to know about the production teams, but I usually stay watching the credits for two reasons, the song is good, or there is a post-credit scene which I search up after the movie ends or before it starts.
BUT MY GOD?! how did Mario jump from 1,059, to 1,150?! Does the Sunday even count towards this?!
I was expecting it to be a $20 million jump, but whaaa?
JAPAN
Wow, it might actually beat Frozen 2? O_o
It’ll probably be hard to beat Frozen 2 with a post pandemic release schedule… unless they do re-releases of it in Christmas
Or summer vacation
How long had you been analyzing the movie industry box office?
VOD next week will give it maybe 10mil more…
On and off for 20-odd years, but i usually only look at films I care about, and there are less and less films I care about lol
I just think that Mario is a superior film to Frozen 2, honestly
Welp... I hope it can beat Frozen 2 then...
I mean Peaches is already better than Let it go
No let it go is frozen 1
PFFT oh
Frozen 2 is “into the unknown” which is mid compared to “let it go”
Frozen 2 got a lot of boost from China… which Mario didn’t get because of the fast-changing Chinese viewing habits due to the pandemic
both of them are kinda average but mario is a lot more enjoyable
Still though if we divide it, assuming Japan made $24 million out of the box office 2nd weekend, 80 million is still pretty big.
There are still no results for Poland though
Population density from Poland makes it not so much of a factor, compared to like, China... so all the MAJOR markets I think are in already in-progress... I know I said earlier that China probably wouldn't be a factor for Mario overtaking Frozen 2, but that 100mil gap is... hard I think... I may have to eat my own words
Fighting Tooth and Veil OST is good too. When skipped to 1:19
We have nothing else to say about this film do we
it's a illumination film there's typically not much to say about them
Not really, just collecting bets if it'll surpass Frozen 2 by the end of the year lol
How much more could it potentially pull for 2 month summer holiday? And does it start on June for the US?
End of June, but every state is different I think. Domestically it should be close to done at this point, but it’s still reliably doing 1-8mil a day, which is very impressive at more than a month after release. Honestly I think it’ll do 20mils more or so before the numbers dips below 1mil a day, and 10mil before it dips to below 100k a day.
Beginning to mid June is around the start of summer here
Summer is a bit of a wildcard. Typically there are some event viewings and limited theater. Those has very big variance, anywhere between less than 1mil box office to 20+ mil box office are possible, because it depends on the theaters. That is, if Universal and the local distributing partners don’t choose to do a push of some kind, that is.
Toy tie in, game tie in, double features, reduced admission, prize give away etc etc.
I’m almost going to bet that there’s an internal desire to beat Frozen 2, so they may push for summer and Christmas. Though realistically Summer isn’t going to be anything super significant, but Christmas could be interesting with things like extended edition or something like that. Who knows.
Gots to have a gimmick to get people back into the theater to boost the numbers.
Frozen 2, for instance, had a “singalong version”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 3 hour cut
The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Miyamoto cut
#releasethemiyamotocut
But yes! From experience working at a theatre, summer is pretty hit and miss with how many people will come. More people want to be outside lol
lmao yes give us the miyamoto cut
Like in general i see a lot@more attendance in the first and last quarters of a year
the middle two waver
Summer you have to make it an EVENT, to make it work
“Look how explody are our explosions, and how punch-y are our kong fu:.. and look at that big cgi!”
Mario, I don’t see it as a massive performer in the summer… it’s a crowd pleaser, but not really extra spectacular and boom boom pew pew.
Of course, if this summer is extra hot… who knows.
He didn't like it, did he
No
Good for him
nope
I remember hearing that when video tweets he saw a movie, you can tell if he liked it depending on how he sentenced it
Too lazy to fix his name
Absolutely
If he likes it he’ll write a bit about it
And you can see for Mario it got, well, a sentence
A sentence with a power-up mushroom.
still need to see it
Rewatchin this
I will say this..... The Mario movie is unbeatable in terms of being the highest video game movie adaptation.
Which other game even has the potential in doing so? League of Legends? Because thats the closest to the next biggest thing I can think of.
mario easily has the largest worldwide appeal out of any game franchise
helped by having a long and important legacy
Yeah, there is no freaken way the Mario movie will get overtaken by a different video game adaptation in terms of earnings.
I don't think anything could come close except maybe a call of duty, fortnite, or gta film adaption
Mario is forever !
Depends if it's even good enough and/or faithful
You're 100% better to watch war movies and others rather than a call of duty adaptation movie, what uniqueness does it even possess for it to deserve an adaptation like Mario does? Mario is different in everyway for its fictional concept and world.
The only way to surpass the Mario movie adaptation, is for Nintendo themselves to release a Mario sequel for it. xD
I don't think Zelda would come close either, I mean I think it'll be high up there, but not at the Mario level.
Yeah I've never seen Zelda anywhere near close to mario in terms of popularity
Until breath of the wild came out, I think that game expanded the fanbase for the series by a ton, but still not as big as mario
I've seen it 3 times already, i'm itching to watch it for the 4th time.
Arcane did well.
What are the numbers?
LoL does not have nearly the four-quadrant appeal that is in a Mario
the problem with other games-turned-movies is that the games themselves were movie derivatives so the movie version of the game that was inspired by a movie is just a worse version of the movies they were inspired by (See: Tomb Raider, Uncharted, AssCreed)
Huh, a billion
Well League of Legends is or was the most played video game in the world.
I haven't played it in a long time though.
Brand recognition only goes so far. This show was the shit!
ive honestly never played LoL and im not super caring to
You're better off not to, I wasted 9k-14k hours on it, despite it being one of the most fun, the toxicity and while being one of the most tilting games takes a toll on your mental health.
And now that i'm older, I never knew how damn time consuming it is.
Back then, games used to last an average of 22 minutes, but there are times where it'll last longer like 40-50. But as of how things changed now, not sure.
Would buying this really support the Mario movie?
30$ wtf
Never played LoL either, but the show was pretty darn good, imo.
Canadian dollars
I mean, it sure doesn't need support it's clearly a success
‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE’ is NOW available on digital platforms.

Every single reference in the mario movie videos here we come
But they have to bypass Nintendos copyright, no?
Or else they'll end up like Gary Bowser.
faster than theater release in Poland xD
While Illumination did great job in animation department, their humor, writing and music choices dragged this title pretty heavily
At theaters or streaming?
streaming
I was able to understand all of the references
I felt like I was home
visuals were some of the best animations I've seen as well as the style
pacing issues were definitely noticeable
things just kind of happened
but I wonder if that was on purpose
chris pratt, seth rogan, charlie day, and anna taylor joy did not fit in the movie as well as I would like
Like, I understand that they couldn't just imitate the classic style, but couldn't they just add it into their voices a little more? Just enough to sound familiar?
I expected peach to sound more like a classic disney princess
fun fact: mario not liking mushrooms is a reference to shigeru miyamoto adding mushrooms to the original super mario bros game because his son did not like mushrooms
More contribution to the film
Nice stuff
Also streaming it in theater 1 right now
A sugary speed-run through the mushroom kingdom, and exactly what you'd expect from a nintendo/illumination animated collaboration. This is inoffensive, happy-go-lucky multiplex fare. Kids will love it. Features pretty, albeit standard, animation and typical celebrity voice-acting issues. On the way out of the theater, an electronic sign in the lobby had advertisements for Lego Mario. This movie will make all of the money and in that sense it is a grand success for corporate synergy.
You combine two money hungry studios like illumination and nintendo this is understandably what happened
Same with Lego and nintendo
It's precisely why it was made... it's the missing puzzle in Nintendo's Mario Strategy, this completes the domination lol...
To be fair, I think it's better done and more fun than most Illumination by themselves works
@tawdry yacht Continuing from the JW4 thread
If you remove International (which is a much more complicated formulas involving local distributing partners and production translation/dubbing etc etc), Mario made a LOT more money than Frozen 2 ANYWAYS... despite (at least so far) not having passed Frozen 2's All Time Global record.
Ahh I see, I'll need to re read this 2 more times
@umbral nova So you've stated that Mario wanted to surpass/needed Frozen 2, but as it implies from Miyamoto, he thinks that earning this much has to be very lucky, so Nintendo was not expecting this.
It was from one of the interview I've watched where he stated.
Obv they HAVE to say that… and the Iger “congratulations” is basically “hey, better f’n luck next time”
It’s all in the subtext
Mind you, Nintendo probably is walking away with between 200-300mil of “low effort” money, why wouldn’t they say that “it was lucky”, you know?
They didn’t spend much on it, and the supervision stuff is mainly reading some scripts and dealing with internal meetings and approval sessions, on top of some press work. Compared to actually making a game or the movie themselves.
on a movie, but they will also triple sell of their merch and games with Mario
Which is “things they are already going to do”, so again “extra money for low efforts”
They had their own studio, which is "Nintendo pictures", chances are, they'll do it themselves from now on?
They weren't able to do it before because they aren't familiar with the technology or have assets for it?
Naw, too expensive, better deal with IP trading than full-on make it themselves
Lot Efforts = good money
Nintendo Pictures, is mostly considered "support and animation support", but who knows... it could be used in other ways... it used to be called Dynamo, before being bought by Nintendo in 2022, and used to do mocap and in-game animation for games.
It doesn't really have the capacity to take on something like Super Mario Bros, with only 105 employee at one point. Which again leads me to believe that it's established for other reasons, we'll see.
Mario is on it's way to surpass Frozen 1 now, being ranked at the 20th spot
That's NOT the point... international numbers are for prestige really... a significant percentage of that gets lost on their way to the main distributors and production, and REAL money in hand returns, are better calculated with Domestic Box Office... and in that, as far as PG and G films, Mario is second only to Incredibles 2.
Nintendo obviously can finance the movie themselves, but building animation studio from ground up is whole different animal. It will take years to hire people with talent and know-how to run that kind of operation.
Nintendo Pictures is probably gonna make cutscenes, trailers, ads... Maybe they can scale up in couple years to tackle something as complex as theatrical release
The peeps at next level games and the mario + rabbids ubisoft team does a really great job animating the mario cast
A lot better so than nintendo themselves tbh, their cutscene work is just super charming and well polished
No, this is just a fresh message update, it has nothing to do to reply what you've answered before.
I know, but I love the sound of my voice, even virtually lol
Sorry, narcissism lol
I saw this movie. I loved it. They clear up the Mario accent right at the very start. Very very nice. The way they did that. Love Chris Pratt.
Thin story, awesome ride… then again, not much story in Mario games anyways
its mostly just ride without much plot
gotta speed that up like 10 times
That gif is strangely attractive.
Jennifer Connelly, Carrer Opportunities (1991)
Oof...some bad green screen up yonder.
That sure was a movie
DEFINATELY a MOVIE
I rather enjoy that movie. I'm kind of a sucker for Henson.
Many movies are movies, in fact, I'd say that nearly all movies are movies
Agreed. 😛
So what do you think Brooklyn is doing with that giant bowser castle
Didn’t it exploded or something, when Bowser slammed into it?
It’s rubble now
Just checked, it exploded, and is rubble now
Still left a huge mess and several square blocks gone
My theory is that the wrecking crew is cleaning up the mess and a certain duo of yellow and purple discover the item blocks and the plot of Spiderman: homecoming happens
Ahhaha wrong studio
Spiderman is Disney/Marvel/Sony; Mario is Universal/Illumination/Nintendo
The two shall not cross
Some multiverses can’t be combined, unfortunately
Now if it caused the Nightmare Future from Justice League, I’ll buy that
Let me have my crackpot theory
[having a tantrum for no reason lol]
I am wrong, destruction looks pretty big, min a couple of hundred people injured or dead, actually
Wow, mario beated Frozen now, how much longer will the Mario movie be in theaters for?
Eternity
The end of summer probably
i'm sure Disney will push it out of kid slots eventually
inb4 mario survives longer in theaters than elemental
Did it? Didn’t follow the box office
Oh frozen… the target is frozen 2 tho
Still the second highest animated film anyway.
But at what costs do re-releases do?
Cost?
I guess none then.
Because since they do re releases it will take up an auditorium.
There will be some cost, but that is mostly offset by the theaters’ DCP kit rental cost
That’s what re-releases are good for, since the rental is generally between 300-600USD a week, with less limitations on minimum screens and showings, as well as generally better box office percentage for the theaters.
First run films rentals costs more, especially because it would have shipping and additional costs that may or may not be shared by the distributors, and the theater only makes 10% (on average) and most of the time the theaters also has to guarantee minimum screens and showings, as well as other terms that can be confusing.
For Mario, for instance, the theater will likely leave the DCP on the local server, because they probably will replay it in theaters in the summer, regardless of official re-issue.
They can’t play it anyways after the encryption key expires, but will save shipping and other things, they just need to pay for a new rental key.
Huh? 10%? Theaters, and distributors would always keep that confidential. Last year, I bought extra tickets for One Piece film red to support it.
Normally, theaters makes not more than 10% of the box office for the opening week of any given film in North America. It slides up higher as time goes on. International are different each region, but generally fluctuate between that number as well, though some theaters may make much more in places where the distributors and/or studios owns the theater chains, which had been illegal in North America between 1949 and 2020.
So basically, at least on first release, movie theaters makes the bulk of their revenue on food and beverage, not tickets.
Hence the heavy emphasis (at least here in North America) of “get a popcorn”
Theaters can get a slight boost in revenus if they claim minimum operating cost (make i think up to 30% of a film’s ticket on release, up to their minimum overhead) but that usually mean a much slower slide-up on percentage later, and are mostly claimed by smaller single or double screen and art house theaters, less done with megaplexes.

Goddamn... I regret not doing it earlier, so I can always look back on it and do re-reads
So the cut from the theaters do not get included in the box office, correct?
The box office is the COMBINED number of the ticket sales, each distributors and studios works out the percentage with the movie theaters/chains normally, and that percentage isn’t removed from the actual pre-tax and pre-processing fees total revenue numbers, because each deal is different, and they DON’T want people really to know the exact numbers (not to mention that it looks better with a bigger number).
So, if you buy a ticket for $10, then $10 is counted towards the box office, despite $1 going to the theaters, and generally $4.5 goes to distributor and $4.5 goes to the studio. The deal between the studio and the distributor(s) may also be different than “half”, since outside of PR and Marketing, the distributors’ general cost remains fixed per theater (per print in the old days).
It doesn’t matter if a film costs $10mil or $100mil, if the distributor wants to show it in 1000 theaters, their distributing (making different formats DCP for each theaters from the studio’s DCPM, copying of the hard disks, shipping and handling), will be between 1.5mil to 2mil. They are however, expected to front some money toward PR and Marketing in each region they represent. So in terms of a $10mil film, they are EXPECTED to throw in between 8-8.5mil (to bump their costs to a full $10mil); and in terms of the $100mil film, they would be expected to be putting in 98-98.5mil toward PR and Marketing (for an even $100 mil).
Of course, the actual math is much more complex than the above theoretical math, since the studio could’ve been getting money back as tax break, reducing actual SPENT budget vs PUBLISHED budget, or put in some PR and Marketing money to take a bigger percentage of the box officer cut from the distributor etc etc.
Increasingly, also, studios are offsetting their costs by contracting out bits and bobs, meaning say Illumination and Nintendo may be putting in SOME money (or additional work) against Universal. In those case the studio itself wouldn’t be making as much of the box office money as if they funded the whole thing themselves.
It’s ALL about the contract negotiations between the Studio with the Production, the Studio with Distribution, and the Distribution with theaters/theater chains, with the production budget as a gauge toward each’s responsibilities. Larger (usually financial, unless it’s a borrowed IP like Mario) responsibilities = bigger cut of the box office, generally speaking.
A good example is Spider-Man… for things like Endgame, Sony puts in really a couple of millions to make sure they have some returns on “their character”, and things like No Way Home would be close to 50/50 split budget between Disney and Sony, while Venom would be like 100% Sony funded, with Marvel on a bit of a consulting position (so “work”) for 2-5% of the box office cut. Actual deals are probably far more complicated, but that’s the gist of it.
Fun ones are the super indies like Blare Witch Project, where there’s really no Major Studio funding the production, and the production would be selling the distribution rights for probably 20-30% of the box office cut, but distribution would be paying for all of the mastering and duplicating costs, and of course PR and Marketing, for a massive 70-80% cut, after the theaters got their 10%.
That’s why, traditionally, it’s been said that a film “breaks even” at double its budget. Though realistically, with Major Studio productions, breaking even could be really more like 3x budget, or more, depending on the funding/investing breakdowns, and other deals, because they have to get more money back to support their large size, and PR and Marketing from the Studio side.
But as I’ve said earlier, major studios can absorb a flop much better using different accounting techniques and its various revenue streams, while they don’t really make as much as they “think” they should on a success. If you have seen the film The Producers that’s a super simplified logics (and of course wrong in all the details) of how a failed project can sometimes be better for the studio than a success. Since if it’s a failure, they can absorb or write it off through creative accounting, but if it’s a success, they need to PAY real money to other involved parties.
Disney writing off $1.5-1.8bil as “impairment charges” from Disney+, for instance, is one such accounting practice. Real cost to the company is minimal, but they are “writing off money they would’ve spent if they kept those things as active assets”, so it’s really “fake money” for accounting purposes.
I mean, it’s real money (licensing, residuals, server space, bandwidth cost… some of those numbers are actually very arbitrary… and some of these money are like, between D+ and Disney Animation or D+ and LucasFilms, so left hand to right hand sort of accounting) but they haven’t spent it.
It’s basically optimization of accounting, toward things that DOES get views and will bring in new subs or keep old subs… if that makes any sense.
All that is of course, before we start to talk about international markets, and those deals are even more complicated because you have so many regions and local distributing partners. I really don’t want to think about those because I don’t want my head to explode lol.
Fun fact, a movie theater or chain can also do the OPPOSITE, and outright pay money to the distributor to get a higher percentage on opening week, which also means that their cut percentage will slide up faster as time goes on. That is mostly done by megaplexes and less with single/double screen theaters and art house theaters.
Oh my god, saved
5.5/10, maybe a 6
Pros:
-Animation is well adapted
-Charlie Day and Jack Black give good voice performances
-Score and sound design slap
-Tone stays true to the spirit of the games
Cons:
-Writing is terrible
-Voice acting otherwise is basically just the actors speaking normally
-Bad music choices
-Way too little that wasn’t already shown in the trailers
-Humor kinda sucks
Yeah I think I'll like this one a lot less as time goes on
It's kinda whatever to me now
I think mario deserves better still, have no hopes for the sequel to be any better because illumination never tries with their sequels
Illumination’s business model is making cheap movies that look extremely appealing to little kids
Mario is definitely better than a lot of their catalog
But they haven’t made one genuinely good flick besides the original despicable me
Mario is better than literally their entire catalog
Even the Sing! movies? I rather enjoyed those.
yep, i dont like them at all personally
"Be like Mario. He's an Italian plumber created by Japanese people, who speaks English and looks like a Mexican. Jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew." - An Old Meme
don't take it too seriously
It just means there’s no plans to tell him about it or possibly include him… or that they just did a single movie contract just to see
I think you read it wrong
Yes I did…
Universal Pictures is closing a deal to acquire the rights to ‘THE LEGEND OF ZELDA’.
It would be Illumination’s next big film.
(via https://t.co/1nyCSMthl8)
Oh,please, let it be so!
Please let it be A Link to the past!
Maybe they will get some theme park rights with it too?
As a voice, would he be really that bad?
Good thing i was born in the 80's.
I found this movie to be great, and at the same time, it was a little triggering of my adhd. I had to really really concentrate to follow it. Myabe that is a "me" thing and the rest of the world did not experience this?
Well you're not the only neurodivergent in the world so it's quite possible other neurodivergents may have experienced it.
My son didn't like it as much when he was ON meds, as when he WASN'T... so there may be some truth in that theory
You’re a fake doctor, you tell us
He found it more fun when he couldn’t concentrate on it and just let “the Mario wash over him”, actual quote
‘THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE’ has already earned $75M+ from PVOD sales.
Read our ranking of all Illumination films: https://t.co/PcevK1P0W5
Remember when physical media sales could earn like $200+ million
no
It’s all because people know it’ll be on streaming a couple of months later than VOD
How good is 75 million on vod?
Not good, not bad, it just means that most people who wanted to see it had, and the rest are waiting for Streaming.
Depending on the deals, Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal may each get about 13mil, if broken down evenly (it won’t be), but no matter what, the actual numbers of 45mil income (up to 40% to platforms) is just icing on the cake anyways.
good but flawed
Fun, but pointless story, but fun
I already VOD'd it too, after watching it in theaters twice lol
Super marios box office for South Korea looks very disappointing compared to the presence to Frozen 2.
It was number 1 for the week of release, and number 2 for 2 more keeps, so yeah the NUMBERS are disappointing, but I'd rather think that simply not as many people in South Korea went to theaters compared to pre-pandemic... and Frozen 2 was one of the last MAJOR family film before the pandemic hit. So there's really no comparison.
What's the reason for an early release of that on May?
Both in the sense that people are waiting to see things on streaming (particularly a family film which is better served at home), and that movies go into streaming a lot faster during and after the pandemic
Easter Sunday in North America, late release in Japan was to avoid Doraemon
there will be a bump from summer holidays though right?
Hard to say, there will be some returns, but it's not a film that really stands the test of repeated viewings in a short span of time.
I'd say they would've been making a push in Nov or Dec, but as far as I can tell, they won't beat Frozen 2
The fact that, as a POST pandemic, post China breakdown film, it was able to even get close, is nothing short of a miracle, honestly speaking
I mean, you have to really see it in the bigger perspective... it's STILL number 7 in North American Domestic market 2 days ago.... that's crazy.
Another thing to consider is that, ultimately, Frozen II will probably made LESS money than Super Mario Bros. when it's all said and done. We are 120mil away, though in reality it's only 20mil away before they "make the same amount of money", because Mario has 100mil budget, and Frozen 2 has 150mil... meaning that you need to substract 100mil from Frozen 2's box office compared to Mario, to see how much the studios are making. Of course, the cavieat is that Frozen is ALL Disney, while Mario is Universal, Nintendo, Illumination sharing the pot.
Mario movie hate will grow now because Spider-Verse has more style with substance in their animation and they'll look at mario movie and just find bland substance behind good graphics and animation
Naw, different reasons to exist, comparing the two is like comparing Despicable Me to Wall-E, doesn’t compute… but I guess people are so full of hate these days that they will try anything. That said, MARIO with SUBSTANCE? Are you kidding me? It’s about a lizard turtle in love with a princess and the everyday hero elevated to save her (tho she is more of less capable to save herself, albeit with probably more collateral and bystander damage)… it was designed to have no substance other than “when the levels are too hard, you should try again and again until you pass it, and oh buy more of our games and merch”…. Doesn’t mean that it’s not a great ride tho.

Some movies rely more on visuals than story. Mario does its best in that department I think. Nothing short of the best dynamic camera use/action in any western animated movie. https://imgur.com/a/v2A2sL2
Thinking people prefer spider verse over mario just for the animation is wrong
The story and characters were infinitely more compelling too
Both movies are from very popular and beloved ips, but I think mario really depends on that established love to get the most out of the film, whereas anybody can connect to either spider verse film without much knowledge of it beforehand
good movie but flawed
this scene was cool tho
And even JUST the animation is plain stupid... because actually it's not the ANIMATION of Spider-verse that made it good (outside of the story and characters and whatnot)... what makes it is it's STYLE, and that's ANOTHER layer above the "quality" of animation that each of the shots in Spider-verse had to go through, on the pipeline.
I agree Spider-verse 2 is a heck of a good looking movie. Probably the best-looking animated movie ever. I don't think Mario is too far behind tho. It's certainly pushing a cool vignette look and has very popping imagery.
Yeah I mean, obviously ATSV is superior visually, but this movie definitely pops on screen and looks very goof
true
Here’s a video message from Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Chris Meledandri of Illumination, the co-producers of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, to express their appreciation to all of our fans for watching the film. #Su…
4.5/5
Feels like there was a sequel announcement there but it was scrapped last minute. Maybe because of the strike?
Likely not
They save those for the Directs
This is just typical Japanese “humbly gloat” ehhehe
Movie was alright, they should’ve just made a super smash bro movie if donkey Kong was in it, 🍿
or a DK movie since mario was in it.
Cuz historically, as far as video games are concerned, Mario started in Donkey Kong.
Huh. I don’t remember seeing two Italian characters with there initials on there hats, in the games? Unless you’re saying Mario gameplay originated from donkey Kong?
[You saying they have the same style?]
Mario originated from DK, yes.
Technically “Jumpman” but yes
Bottom line, Just Mario and DK do not a Smash movie make.
Think we'll get a...Smashverse of sorts?
Mario and Sonic in a movie together ehhehe
20 fire emblem movies
I genuinely can’t think of one great aspect of this movie
It does mostly everything competently but nothing really excels at all
its great tho
Jack Black was great but that's Jack Black being great not exactly movie being great
It’s a great ride, and it’s great at “doing everything in the perfect middle”

I can. The platforming parkour and the Kart scene.
Well...I thought those were great, anyways.
its fine
fucking peacock.
good for the four people who have it
it'll probably eventually hit Netflix like every other illumination film
Defo a platform i don’t subscribe to, and not looking forward to lol
6 months exclusive probably
I wish i had peacock, if only because it has ALL the Columbo.
Not worth the 4.99 a month for just Columbo
i dunno. I like me some Columbo.
you could do a lot worse than watch Columbo for a month for 5$
123movies
how did yall react when you first heard Luigi say "that is cinema"?
i don't remember any line that wasn't said by Jack Black
Lol
and even his.. .it's mostly just "Peaches"
SANG
Peaches peaches peaches peaches peaches; peaches peaches peaches peaches peaches... I LOOOOVE yoooooooou!
Princess peach
I still have the peaches song stuck in my head
"Oh boy can't wait for twitter to repost that thousands of time"
I must be dreaming…
She has come soooo far since The VVitch.
I love this movie from start to finish.
This is incredible

This is fire 🔥 take it down!!
This is Jr and the koopalings when bowser told them peach was their mother
First ‘k-bop’ song I heard, I was like “what is this Shii”
I was gonna do, the person who played me the song a favor, and throw there 💿 away. Lol
{wasn’t really going to do that}
wow this is good considering this is KIDZBOP
The original song is a forced meme anyways
If it gets nominated for an award over Am I Dreaming I’m screaming
i would eat a sock if that's what it takes for me to never have to listen to that version of peaches forever
original is the only way to listen
I mean, the animation was really good but the story was quite good.. didn't bother me as I had a lot of fun and clearly many people did as well. I think this movie is gonna be the highest grossing movie of 2023.
¯_(ツ)_/¯ people want FUN in this drab time, who’d thought?
This movies theatrical window is still going how
Theatrical window is over, because PVOD is out, but it’s “still in theaters”
It seems to be making average nearly 3-4K per theater playing it per day over the weekend, which is still very strong number at a whopping 11th weekend.
Even in the olden days of 90 days release window, and 180 days before physical media and VOD, it’s good numbers. In these days of 30 days release window and 60 days VOD it’s stupidly good numbers.
very fun, def cool to see my childhood adapted into a movie
It's a very beautiful movie. Really faithful translation of the source material's worlds and characters
Just wish the story was better because clearly the script needed more work. Feels like there's moments where the characters could sit down and talk but most of those moments don't last over 30 seconds.
Which is less than ideal especially because the ideas and said moments are there but very undercooked by what feels like a very obvious 90 min runtime mandate.
The directors should definitely try now that they have some clout with the enormous box office this movie made to push the runtime next time and make it more character-driven
wish we got more
We will. But not before 2026 at the earliest I'd say.
Even on the tighest production timeline, an animated movie production timeline needs 3 years minimum to get made.
100% bet they knew this movie would be huge before it released and plans were already made
Fun fact: they appear for the first time in the movie but at least some of Mario's family members were based on old unused designs that were kept secret by Nintendo.
10/10
Not even close
11/10 ?
based
8.5 / 10. Final offer
