I mentioned this in the #1055661635542458388 chat a few minutes ago, and it kinda hit me to make this discussion: what are you biggest pet peeves of seeing a film in a cinema? Do any of you relate with what I hate, or maybe it's an American thing that I simply cannot understand...

Personally, it's when people keep their phone's on, like if it's just for checking the current time, yeah I guess... But when you're like the lady in my Babylon session this afternoon (Brightness cranked all the way up, had it on for practically ¾ of the film's runtime checking bloody clothes shops and Insta reels, the two were in front of where I was sitting, plus she was extremely clumsy, dropped and spilt popcorn everywhere, also constantly leaving and coming back into the auditorium), it really grinds my non-existent gears. Like I was constantly trying to block out the view by closing my right eye, but it honestly started to hurt.

When the person behind me keeps kicking my seat, people that get inside the theater when the movie has started and I have to give way to their seat, kids in adult movies

#

Also people talking on their phone

#

With loud voice

vagrant stirrup
#

Holy hell, yeah.

#

I'd also like to give a very very very honorable mention to the kids that go to animated films, if you gave birth to a child, give parenting a big damn.

#

So many, people using mobile phones and actually talking, people arriving late, two people talking among themselves etc

vagrant stirrup
#

I can honestly forgive arriving late.

#

My dude Manny walks into The Jazz Singer 30-40 minutes in

#

Seems like the big issue is phones.

#

Those damn Sheila's

I have a friend who goes on her phone during the film any time she gets a message and to check her likes on her insta.(she posts when she goes to the cinema of the title screen)

I was going to make this topic it's own thread but I really don't have drinks during long ass films lol

#

Not really a big pet peeve, just wanted to point it out lol.

#

Just gotta take the smallest slurps.

proper wharf
#

people consider taking ear plugs or just regular wired earphones to movies

#

considerably reduces the noise from people having conversations

#

also probably a good idea if u go to lotta movies in general

Children always scare me.

The way they get bored and the parents just let them run off

#

They start dancing and shit at the front

cheering or clapping at the movie theater. Somehow it's considered socially acceptable to verbally/audibly tell everyone else how you're feeling just because it's a positive reaction? You wouldn't boo a movie you didn't like would you? I don't think it's fair to those who want a quiet theater experience. It's only purpose is to tell others around you you're having a good time. I went to avatar 2 and there was some lady in the front and she was the only one clapping at the movie and it was so annoying. even worse in a theater of more than one person that thinks its okay to do, basically ruins my experience at times. children or babies are probably worse but clapping/cheering is for some reason deemed socially acceptable which i think makes it more common and therefore worse.

MCU moment

#

Y'all clap when a super jumps or something

wet bobcat
#

yuuup i fricken saw that new spider man movie and i thought it was okay then one of the spidermens showed up and ofc people started clapping and put a damper on that scene for me

vagrant stirrup
#

I wonder if people fuckin' cheered during the Marvel intro. (It being a quiet tribute to Chadwick)

wet bobcat
#

i saw it like a couple weeks ago in January so luckily it was quiet. would never see that movie when it came out.

#

thats just asking for trouble

vagrant stirrup
#

Honestly kinda disrespectful when you think about it

#

Lol

#

I did see an Insta reel where a UK cinema was playing some sort of Indian film and I would assume a big thing happened in it, the front was extremely messy, the cops were called. XD

wet bobcat
#

it is disrespectful i dont know why it wouldnt be. its not a red carpet premier where the cast and crew are there so i dont get what the point is.

#

its just loud and distracting

vagrant stirrup
#

Don't think I saved it tho :(

#

Like I'm honestly fine with laughing, it's a natural reaction.

#

Plus your laughing ends up being louder because they're closer to your ears.

#

Which is why I giggle a ton

wet bobcat
#

laughing isnt the same, its involuntary

vagrant stirrup
#

Ye

wet bobcat
#

if someone voluntarily laughs you wouldn't know

#

so its not rude

vagrant stirrup
#

Tons of giggling during Babylon

wet bobcat
#

someone legit tried to tell me it was the same when i said clapping was saying clapping was rude

vagrant stirrup
#

Also from me thanks to the horrible Scream 6 trailer

#

That's honestly what scares me seeing Across the Spider-Verse in cinemas, overrun with youngins and MCU fans that really want to see Lego Spider-Man.

#

But I'm honestly so glad it's coming to cinemas, I never got to see the first in cinemas

#

Biggest pet peeve is people not seeing the ratinf of the movie or what the movie is about beforehand and so they come to the theatres with their children

I was in Bullet Train showing and this random parents got up with their kids in the MIDDLE of the movie to leave

vagrant stirrup
#

Holy fuck LMAO

#

Y'all remember Sausage Party lol

rancid sleet
#

Lol

#

Also, during Avatar 2, this sister brother pairing sat next to me and the brother was just explaining the plot of the first movie to his sister during the movie lol

vagrant stirrup
#

LOL

#

Oh god that reminds me of that one guy during the Lightyear screening.

#

Just explaining what the reference was.

rancid sleet
#

Just dont bring children in the theatres if all they do is scream

vagrant stirrup
#

It all comes down to good parenting, really.

rancid sleet
#

If your kid is well behaved then there is no issue

vagrant stirrup
#

We're all born to become shitheads in our first years, to be fair.

#

But I was intensely quiet even in my under 10s

rancid sleet
#

As achild, I would never even speak a word during the theatres in case I made too much noise lol

vagrant stirrup
#

Honestly goes to show my love of film even at an early age. :)

rancid sleet
#

Ooh nice the thread creator has OP on his name

#

Very Reddit

vagrant stirrup
#

That's me!!

#

Even if I'm the OP I can't pin comments lol

#

I might do another thread soon enough, actually.

wet bobcat
#

babies is where i draw the line really

vagrant stirrup
#

So true

wet bobcat
#

i seen first man at the theater and somebody brought a baby. to a movie thats main draw is having extremely claustrophobic and loud rocket launches

#

thats just irresponsible to blast a lil babies ears like that

blazing wagon
#

I've never had people clapping during a movie where I live. It's just not the custom.

#

However, during festival screening (outside usual theater screening) people would often clap at the end of the screening. I guess people who go to festival are mostly movie fans who go out of their way to see non mainstream movies

#

So different custom applies, idk haha

wet bobcat
# blazing wagon I always think it's an American culture to cheer with the movies.

it is an american thing and its really obnoxious. the truth is that some people in america are more interested in having what they consider to be a "good time" than caring about seeing a good movie, so they go to big releases with the sole motive of treating it like a concert or a sports game. they all go in a big group and clap at the parts where they see an actor they know. its really rude to people who are just there to see the movie, but these people are going with the intention of having a "communal experience" and think theyre owed that experience since its a big release.

#

they act like if theyre not clapping and cheering at the screen theyre not enjoying themselves

rancid sleet
vagrant stirrup
#

Topical

rancid sleet
#

But yeah seems to be predominantly an American thing lol

blazing wagon
#

They should make a quiet screening and normal screening, like when in a train in Europe they have silent car and normal car hahaha

wet bobcat
#

fr i feel that way

#

i also think an "adult swim" hour should be in order, at night kids shouldnt be allowed to see movies with parents or not

#

after like 8pm that should be adults only showing

rancid sleet
#

Kids shouldnt come if they cant behave

blazing wagon
wet bobcat
#

if their with their parents kids should still be able to come

#

i believe, but no latest is usually 11pm

untold light
#

It's not a problem for me unless they do it constantly when the movie is on

#

I had that problem once when me, my mom, and her friend saw Annabelle Comes Home

untold light
#

Yeah I mean if they only do it rarely during certain parts, then I can tolerate it

#

Though I never really had that be a constant problem whenever I go to a movie theater

tired saddle
#

idk who agreed to soda cans in theatres it's so annoying when they open bcs they make a massive sound

#

they even have them in like theaters where you see stage plays now

#

and when people who are late just glare their phone torches in everyone's faces

I experienced a lot when watching EEAAO over and over again, but people completely missing the intent of a scene. For EEAAO, it's when Evelyn, an Asian immigrant mother, tells her daughter she's getting fat instead of having an open discussion with her. Every child of an immigrant can tell and relate to that scene, but everyone else laughs at it.

When I go to watch the movie, and some people sit right in front of me. All I see is the tops of their heads now the whole movie (I'm really short and it's a personal pet peev experience)

Also, when I can't find any seats right in the MIDDLE of a row. Slightly to the left or right seats? No ty

Honestly, people talking or being on their phone doesn't bother me at all.

vagrant stirrup

OMG NOOOOOOOO

So true

I'm 4'10 (147 cm)

a packed theater and concerts are basically the bane of my existence unless I one day learn to love watching other people's heads for a few hours instead of the intended show

I'm 6'3 right now, so I'm sorry in advance.

rancid sleet

...She said it was a personal pet peeve
No need to be rude

I do think american theaters are not built high enough

I never have that problem here even though I am as short as pink

I vividly remember getting into a cinema that was really steep, was like a basketball stadium

It's a personal bucket list to watch a movie in a country I visit, even though I won't understand the movie cuz of the language.
Unfortunately, I was only able to do it once or twice so far
