This was by far my favourite episode. To the point that I thought this part was better here than in the game. In both the action and character-narrative work this was the definition of what the Last of Us and its world are all about. Also it shows how you can do changes that are short and direct and if you do 'em in a cool way to preserve the essence of the game that everything is going to be fine. Also I'm so glad ||sniper mission made it in the show.||

Also the ||last scene with Henry and Sam|| is one of the most powerful moments in the game for me and they absolutely did it justice for the new audience.

No, in the game he's working in construction as a carpenter. I assume the same for the show. He's just a seasoned veteran over the 20 years of the apocalypse. And also he doesn't trust other people, even in the first night of the outbreak he wouldn't trust or let anyone else in the car with his daughter.

You mean when he's holed up with the sniper? I think you're right. But at the same time it wouldn't make sense for 4 people to cross the cover of Sam, Ellie and Henry just like that or they would have been shot. But yeah, it's kinda confusing.

Well I would say they keep a balance, they'll probably present the fireflies as a good rebellious organism. It's just their intentions are always hidden and they change quite easily depending on the perspective. And the narrative.

Observing it from the scope of real life, I'd say all groups involved are the same shit. No group in a post apocalyptic scenario as the one presented in the show could oblige to what we realize as democratic values unless they had very strict criteria about who would get into said group, but they can't do that cause strength comes in numbers. More people means more unpredictability, which leads to chaos and completely unsuitable people sitting comfortably in positions where important decisions need to be taken using rational thinking and careful consideration of long term effects. It's an impossible equation to solve, especially when they have to do everything they can to survive on a day by day basis.

the amount of pain the episode 3 brings can be understood only when you look at episode 5 and shed only some tears

halfway through episode 5, boy is Lamar Johnson and Kathleen's actor the yin and yang of this couple of episodes

it's real hard to buy into Kathleen being this ruthless leader when her performance is way softer than any of the other ''rough'' characters portrayed by other women in the show so far

meanwhile, Lamar Johnson is fucking Henry through and through

what a great actor

also now that there is another guy next to Joel for a considerable amount of time, it really makes you realize how tall of a dude Pedro Pascal is

Personally I bought Kathleen as the leader and it makes sense that she's the leader as her ||brother was the leader before and she must have helped him too||, plus she's very brutal as well

And the point of her being leader is to show that in an apocalypse even someone like her who seems soft can be ruthless

Tess was way more imponent in her performance than Kathleen

and that doesn't work for me at all, goes back to something Barry Jenkins said when talking about Moonlight years back. Although he is right here, talking about real life and how toxic that type of behavior is, I think a capable actor can a 100% use this behavior as a tool to portray an indeed, toxic character.

The problem with Kathleen is she wouldn't command respect without an army around her.

Yes, and that's why she commanded respect. If all of these people came together at random they wouldn't have Kathleen as their leader organically. She doesn't look dangerous and she lets her emotions get the best of her, terrible traits for a person having to make serious decisions for a community. She was a natural leadership extension because of her brother and that's about it.

What I like about this whole depiction though, is that her bad decisions led to the overall logical and obvious downfall of her entire team. She decided to hide the giant hole from her comrades, clearly prioritising her personal quest for revenge instead of the well being of her group, and that in natural fashion ended in complete catastrophe for everyone involved.

Not entirely. Her 2nd in command said that her brother was inspiring, but ultimately didn't do anything. She was more daring, more reckless, she didn't wait for perfect moment but created, likely by paying heavy price, situation where they could take down FEDRA. And that's she has their respect.

Yes, but we didn't see any of that. We were just told (?) I guess. The only decisions she took on the show was for her own personal benefit and her personal vendetta, justified or not, against Henry and Sam. Also killing the doctor is questionable at best.

No, we saw that people followed her, ergo we know it happened. We only see fraction of her story cause it's not her show. But imho the rebellion against FEDRA was also her personal vendetta.
