How do I do this

stuck smelt
#

can we type our question here or like

#

go to help and wait for an open channel

#

yoha

inland ether
#

Idek

#

What am I doing

#

SOMEONE HELP PLS

stuck smelt
#

ok so basically

#

our like teacher showed us something else and this isnt it and we tried to do it but it like doesnt make sense

inland ether
#

Yes

keen oriole
#

,rccw

green saddleBOT
keen oriole
#

so where exactly are you stuck? what did your teacher show?

stuck smelt
#

we are stuck on like the first part of the probelm if that makes sense

keen oriole
#

on which question number? and what do you mean by "first part of the problem"?
(also, I don't think you should send random GIFs into a help post...)

stuck smelt
#

oh sorry

inland ether
#

Okay so

stuck smelt
#

okay im stuck on the second one

keen oriole
#

question 2, alright.
can you show what you've tried?

stuck smelt
#

and like the first step because the teacher said for example before it could be 2x=y or something but now its like x=y and it doesnt make sense to me

keen oriole
#

what does not make sense to you? how are you taught to substitute?

stuck smelt
#

thats basically it

keen oriole
#

a quick reminder that just because the variables have changed around, doesn't mean you can't reuse the same concepts for them.

keen oriole
stuck smelt
keen oriole
#

now solve that new equation for y.

inland ether
#

I’m stuck on the question 2, 3 and 5 bc on the number 2 it says y= 2y - 2 but the teacher said that in that part we have to substract to like the numbers that are on the both sides of the ecuation but there’s only y on the other side

inland ether
#

idk if u can understand

#

cuz I don’t know how to write English properly

#

I’m sorry

stuck smelt
keen oriole
#

I'm not sure what your teacher meant, but what you need to do here is to make the equation into y = {something}, without any y on the other side.

stuck smelt
#

can i show you the original like equations she explained and the one she gave us now

#

if thats easier

keen oriole
#

any context is worth it.

stuck smelt
#

okay wait

#

this is what we were taught

inland ether
#

Exactly

stuck smelt
#

this is what she gave us out of nowhere

inland ether
#

We weren’t taught things like y= 2y - 2

#

And all exercises are like that

keen oriole
#

it's the same situation right here.

#

plus, at this point, have you learnt about solving an equation for a variable?

#

like, if I gave you 2x + 5 = x + 1, can you solve this for x? (yes/no, you don't have to actually solve it.)

stuck smelt
#

ok wait

#

i dont think so

keen oriole
#

oh dear...

#

alright, if I tell you to move all terms with x to one side, would you understand what I'm telling you to do?

#

for example, given 2x + 5 = x + 1, if I told you to move all terms with x to the left, can you do that? (yes/no.)

#

if not, you may need to understand this concept first. (don't memorize examples!)

keen oriole
#

alright. using my example, move all terms with x to the left, and move all numbers to the right.
show me the final result.

stuck smelt
#

x= 2x+5+1

#

???

#

ikd

keen oriole
#

the 2x was originally on the left, it should not be on the right now.

stuck smelt
#

RIGHT

inland ether
#

x= 1+x+ 2X

#

Wait

#

No

#

I wrote it wrong

#

Sorry

#

BUT I KNOW

stuck smelt
#

x+2x=5+1

#

???

#

HRLP

keen oriole
#

correct concept, wrong signs.

inland ether
#

Wait give me one last change

#

Chance

#

Okay so

stuck smelt
keen oriole
#

yes.

#

I'll explain what I mean when yoha is done.

stuck smelt
#

ok sorry

inland ether
#

x= -1 -x -5 - 2x?

keen oriole
#

incorrect.

inland ether
#

oh

stuck smelt
#

but like the x is on the right

#

when they said put it to the left

keen oriole
#

so let's recap.

stuck smelt
#

okay

keen oriole
#

we had 2x + 5 = x + 1. we want all terms with x on the left.

#

now, 2x is already on the left, so no need to touch it. but x is on the right, so we need to move it.

stuck smelt
#

2x + x = 5+ 1?

keen oriole
#

wrong sign again.

stuck smelt
#

oh my gosh

#

is it -

keen oriole
#

since that x is positive, we must subtract x from the right, so that we have x - x = 0 on the right.
but by doing that, we also have to subtract x from the left to keep the two sides of the equation, well, equal.

stuck smelt
#

oh

keen oriole
#

so, \
$2x + 5 = x + 1$ \
$2x + 5 - x = \cancel{x - x} + 1$ \
$2x - x + 5 = 1$ \
$x + 5 = 1$

green saddleBOT
#

Nicole

keen oriole
#

we can do the same thing to move the +5 to the right, subtracting 5 on both sides to get x = -4.

stuck smelt
#

OHHHH

#

wait

#

okay

#

what does the x like canceled out

#

mean rn

keen oriole
#

x - x = 0, so is there any more need to keep writing it?

stuck smelt
#

ohh okay

inland ether
#

okay so I need help w these two

#

I’m gonna send u what I have

#

I think it’s wrong idk

stuck smelt
#

wait im starting to get it

inland ether
#

3 and 5

keen oriole
#

,rccw

green saddleBOT
stuck smelt
#

question

#

when you substitute the 2y where the x goes, do you put the 2y by itself or does the x go somewhere

keen oriole
#

if y + x = 460 (for example) and x = 2y, then just put the 2y where the x was.
you'd get y + 2y = 460 in this case.

stuck smelt
#

okay thank you

#

cause i was confused on that too

keen oriole
# green saddle

-> x + (15 + x) = -15
up to this line you are correct. I don't know where the 15x came from though.

#

(for question 3.)

stuck smelt
#

the 15x came from the first part

#

right

keen oriole
#

for question 5, it is more advisable to arrange the first equation for x instead of for y.

inland ether
#

The teacher told us that to distribute if we multiply 5x 15 it’s 15x

keen oriole
inland ether
#

Uhm

keen oriole
#

you have x + (15 + x).

#

you don't have x(15 + x).

inland ether
#

Oh right

#

So what do i do?

keen oriole
#

x + (15 + x) is the same as x + 15 + x. you can then proceed.

stuck smelt
#

wait so what am i supposed to do now (when ur done with yoha)

keen oriole
stuck smelt
#

to the left

#

okay

#

so

#

2y + y = -2??

keen oriole
#

wrong sign for 2y.

stuck smelt
#

okay

keen oriole
#

that 2y on the right was positive. you'd have to subtract 2y from both sides.

stuck smelt
#

OHHHH

#

wait

#

okay

inland ether
#

Wait how many is 15x + x

#

I can sumar that??

keen oriole
#

you do not have 15x in the first place.

inland ether
#

wait

#

I’m sorry

keen oriole
#

you have x + 15 + x.

inland ether
#

I wrote it incorrectly

#

I meant 15 + x

keen oriole
#

15 and x cannot be summed.

inland ether
#

okay

keen oriole
#

sum the two x's instead.

stuck smelt
#

i think im doing smth wrong

keen oriole
#

that's the right idea. what would you get?

inland ether
#

and how many is x + x?..

stuck smelt
#

well y-2y

keen oriole
keen oriole
inland ether
#

okay

stuck smelt
#

2y

#

???

keen oriole
#

when someone asks you for an equation, it's probably worth considering that you may be missing something if you don't have an equals sign.

#

plus, y - 2y is not 2y.

stuck smelt
#

sigh

keen oriole
#

(if that was what you meant.)

stuck smelt
#

but y = 1 right? cause its the variable only

#

so

keen oriole
#

y is not 1 here.

stuck smelt
#

okay

#

so how do i y-2y

keen oriole
#

well, y is more accurately 1y. so you have 1y - 2y.
what's 1 - 2?

stuck smelt
#

-1?

keen oriole
#

exactly so.

#

you'd then end up with -1y, which is just -y.

stuck smelt
#

okay

inland ether
#

so I’m sorry for interrupting but now I have 2x(15) = 15, If that’s wrong idk what I’m doing

keen oriole
#

that is slightly incorrect.

inland ether
#

oh

stuck smelt
keen oriole
#

this implies you have 2x times 15. you don't have that - you have 2x plus 15.

stuck smelt
#

idk why im dividing

keen oriole
# stuck smelt

you're not dividing by -y here. dividing is the correct idea though!

#

you are dividing by -1, because you want y alone on the left.

stuck smelt
#

do i divide by -1?

#

oh yay

keen oriole
#

correct.

inland ether
#

?

keen oriole
#

correct.

inland ether
#

Ty

stuck smelt
#

is this correct

inland ether
#

now I have 2x = 30

stuck smelt
#

idk

inland ether
#

That’s what I’m doing idk tho

keen oriole
stuck smelt
#

IH MY GOSH

#

I DIDNIT

#

😭😭😭

keen oriole
inland ether
#

Wait I have it negative I js wrote it wrong

keen oriole
#

be very careful with those signs!!

keen oriole
inland ether
#

Uhm

#

Why is it negative tho

keen oriole
#

you had 2x = -30.

#

and you are dividing by 2.

#

there's nothing here to change the sign of the -30.

inland ether
#

oh

#

So uhm

stuck smelt
inland ether
#

-15?..

keen oriole
#

x is indeed -15 for yoha.

inland ether
#

Ty

keen oriole
stuck smelt
#

WIAT

#

how do i get x

inland ether
#

wait so y= 0?

keen oriole
stuck smelt
#

okay

#

wait

keen oriole
inland ether
#

Yay

keen oriole
#

actually question 3 is quite obvious if you look at it.

#

let me show you an insight for that question alone.

stuck smelt
#

x=4?

keen oriole
#

you have
x + y = -15
x - y = -15

notice that if you add y to x, you get the same thing as if you subtract y from x.

#

that should clue you into the fact that y = 0.
then x would be whatever is on the right.

#

the insight here is that y seems to be doing nothing to the value of x. the only number that does this via addition and subtraction is 0.

#

but for your purposes, don't skip the steps. keep doing what you're currently doing.

inland ether
#

Ohhhh thanks

keen oriole
stuck smelt
#

YES

#

THANK YOU

keen oriole
#

I presume the two of you are done?

stuck smelt
#

i understood

keen oriole
#

if you guys are done, then you may mark this post as solved (but only the original poster can do so).

stuck smelt
#

okay

inland ether
#

Wait no

stuck smelt
#

LMAOO

inland ether
#

I’m sorry but now I’m on num 5

#

What do I do now

keen oriole
#

hm. you had 2x - 8x from the start. why are you substituting y back into the equation?

#

or did you miswrite something? show the full steps.

inland ether
stuck smelt
#

she keeps leaving im crin😭😭

keen oriole
#

,rccw

green saddleBOT
keen oriole
#

you miscopied something for sure. show the original question 5 please.

keen oriole
inland ether
keen oriole
#

in that case, no substitution is necessary here. this question has a typo.

stuck smelt
inland ether
#

Huh

keen oriole
#

the second equation doesn't have a y in it. you can solve it straight away.

inland ether
#

Oh right

keen oriole
#

I presume what they meant was 2x - 8y = 2.

inland ether
#

Ohh

keen oriole
#

but if that is the case, then I have some bad news for you - this system has an infinite number of solutions.

inland ether
#

..

keen oriole
#

assuming that is not the case, however, substitution is not needed.

stuck smelt
#

so.. do i leave it in blank

#

and ask

keen oriole
#

the second equation can be solved normally.

stuck smelt
#

if its written wrong

keen oriole
#

if I were you, I'd just solve the second equation normally, then substitute the value of x into the first equation and solve for y there.

#

then hand it in and see what the teacher says.

inland ether
keen oriole
#

I do not like leaving things blank unless there is a good reason for me to do so.

keen oriole
keen oriole
stuck smelt
#

its due thursday, ill leave it blank and ask and do it monday when my question is answered is that a right thing to do

keen oriole
#

that is more of a morals question than a math question. I cannot answer that for you.
do whatever you feel is right.

stuck smelt
#

okay

#

thanks

inland ether
#

How do I mark this as solved?

keen oriole
#

type .solved or .close.

inland ether
#

.solved
