#

yea

#

where do i put the two points

gleaming flint
#

Okay okay sooo the equation it gave you is in the y=mx + b form

#

Where m is ur slope and b is ur y intercept

gleaming flint
#

The y intercept is where the line crosses the vertical line on the graph

#

So b is -1

#

So on the graph you’d plot a point at (0, -1)

hoary scarab
#

like this?

gleaming flint
#

Yes yess

#

And then for the second point, you have to use the slope, which is m in this case

#

M in the equation is -3/2

#

For slopes that are fractions, you can use the rise over run method

hoary scarab
#

so like

#

-3 and go up 2?

gleaming flint
#

Other way around!

#

Or yes yes it depends on what way ur coming from

#

As long as it goes down 2 and right 3 from the left

hoary scarab
#

like this?

#

@gleaming flint

gleaming flint
#

Sorry sorry I switched it around my bad, move 2 spaces down and 3 to the right

#

As the name suggests rise/run

#

Whatever on top is how much ur going up or down

#

And whatever’s on bottom is how much ur moving left or right

gleaming flint
#

No not not quite

#

Give me a second to draw the answer

#

Sorry the lines are bad it’s hard to draw on phone but

#

The like should look like this

hoary scarab
#

wait

#

so theres a point on positive 2?

gleaming flint
#

As the slope is - 3/2 it should be pointed downwards

hoary scarab
#

i needa erase the one on -1?

Algebra: Linear Graph Sketching

gleaming flint
#

What do you mean? As in erasing the point (0,-1)?

hoary scarab
#

i put a dot here

#

on ixl you gotta put 2 dots

#

for the anwer

gleaming flint
#

Yes yes all the red dots I drew were possible answers

#

You only gotta choose one

hoary scarab
#

oh so i dont gotta erase my dot on -1

gleaming flint
#

But the green point that u put, you definitely need it

hoary scarab
#

ok

gleaming flint
#

Yes yes don’t erase that one because it’s the most important point

hoary scarab
#

this good?

#

thx

gleaming flint
#

Yes yes

hoary scarab
#

your the goat

#

do i gotta make a different forum for my other questions

#

or can i just stay in here

torpid skiff
#

are they related?

hoary scarab
#

yea

torpid skiff
#

then use this post

hoary scarab
#

well

#

different questions same quiz

torpid skiff
#

are they related to this topic?

hoary scarab
#

yea

torpid skiff
#

(see the new name of your post to identify the topic)

hoary scarab
#

yup

#

thats what im on right now

torpid skiff
#

so, do you want to try doing it yourself with us watching, or do you need guidance on this as well

#

the steps are the same, just that you will want to multiply out the parentheses first

hoary scarab
#

alright hold up

#

ima get this first try watcch

#

is this even close??

torpid skiff
#

let's see

#

the y-intercept is wrong and the graph is way too steep

hoary scarab
#

oh

torpid skiff
#

I'll give you a hint

#

the y-intercept here is positive

hoary scarab
torpid skiff
#

it's not 2, unfortunately

hoary scarab
#

oh

#

do i mutliply the -1 and 5?

torpid skiff
#

that -1/5 is one number

#

you'll need to multiply it with the -2 inside

hoary scarab
#

oh

torpid skiff
#

(as well as the x)

hoary scarab
torpid skiff
#

sure thing

#

lemme get my paint out

hoary scarab
#

alr

torpid skiff
#

you have this

hoary scarab
#

mhmm

torpid skiff
#

step 1: distribute the -1/5 against the two terms inside the parentheses

hoary scarab
#

uhhh

#

how do i do that?

torpid skiff
#

multiply -1/5 to each term separately

#

much like how 3(x - 2) becomes 3x - 6

hoary scarab
#

y=10?

torpid skiff
#

there should be an x there

#

also, 10 for the constant term is wrong

#

1/5 x 2 is not 10

hoary scarab
#

0.4

#

well

torpid skiff
#

correct

hoary scarab
#

negative 0.4

torpid skiff
#

positive 0.4 (or positive 2/5)

hoary scarab
#

doesn't the negative on the 1/5 make it negative?

torpid skiff
#

remember that two negatives multiply to a positive

hoary scarab
#

ohhhh yeaa

torpid skiff
hoary scarab
#

double negatives make a positive

#

right

torpid skiff
#

don't forget the x

hoary scarab
#

so y=0.4x whats next?

#

oh

torpid skiff
#

0.4 is the y-intercept

#

you still have to multiply -1/5 by x

#

that's why I put two arrows there

hoary scarab
#

x is just 1 right

torpid skiff
#

x is 1x yes

#

not literally 1, but 1x

hoary scarab
#

-0.2

torpid skiff
#

x

#

don't forget the x

hoary scarab
#

yea

#

-0.2x

torpid skiff
#

so what is the full equation?

hoary scarab
#

lemme erase that point at 2

#

i think you said that was wrong

torpid skiff
#

do you have the equation first?

#

that will make it clearer

hoary scarab
#

what equation

#

this?

torpid skiff
#

the one you made via the multiplication

hoary scarab
#

this?

#

hold up

#

i gotta go home

torpid skiff
#

ok so you got -0.2x, I presume?

hoary scarab
#

in like a minute

#

can we finish tomorrow

torpid skiff
#

tomorrow as in?

hoary scarab
#

im at my sisters house rn

#

with my pc

#

im going home in a minute

torpid skiff
#

I know, I mean how long do I have to wait? we might be in different timezones

hoary scarab
#

im na east

#

i think i have soccer practice tommrrow

#

so like

torpid skiff
#

a rough estimate of the number of hours then

hoary scarab
#

5pm

#

14

torpid skiff
#

that will be midnight for me, so you may have to wait for another helper

hoary scarab
#

k

young lion
#

someone is so graciously helping you 😭 it usually is better to just quickly finish up

torpid skiff

but sure, you may leave this thread open then

if you do end early, just send a message in this thread when you're ready to continue

if I'm available I'll usually be lurking the help forums and channels

#

you guys are great for helping out online... i struggled a lot back in the day to get help so im quite grateful when someone is helping me...

id suggest that you guys take op through the thought process of graphing. i find it easiest to graph with two points one being the x intercept the other the y intercept.

so maybe take op through how to find the x and y intercept when he comes online. its just then joining the two points.

torpid skiff
#

sure thing

hoary scarab
hoary scarab

alright im done
