the left number (a) is the smallest number

the right number (b) is the largest number

#

the brackets represent inclusion

what that means is

#

[2, 6] means that it’s all numbers between 2 and 6, including 2 and 6

#

so 2, 3, 4, 5.3, 6, and π are all included

#

on the other hand, (2, 6) does NOT include 2 and 6

#

so 2.00001 and 5.9999 are still included, but 2 and 6 are not

#

your problem is (−∞, −6]

#

so the smallest number is −∞, which means it would go forever in the negative (←) direction.

the largest number is −6, and it’s included

#
