Why can't we do it like this
First choose three letters and choose one box from each row for them and arrange them by 3! .
Then make cases for rest two letters
Case 1) Both the letters are placed in the first row 2!
Case2) in 2nd row 2!
Case 3) one is first row and one in second row ²C1ײC1×2!
Case4 one in second row and one in third row
Case 5 one in first row and one in second row

Resulting the answer
⁵C3׳C1׳C1ײC1×3![2!+2!+²C1ײC1×2!+ ²C1×2!+²C1×2!]

This is a common mistake people make when trying to arrange elements from a set with multiple stages
Let do it your way ( i do case 1 )
First step: choose 3 letter and put them
R1: |A| | |
R2:|B | | |
R3:|C| | |
Second step: put 2 letters
R1: |A| E| D|
R2:|B | | |
R3:|C| | |
This is one way, let do 1 more way
First step: choose 3 letter and put them
R1: | |E | |
R2:|B | | |
R3:|C| | |
Second step: put 2 letters the first row
R1: |A|E |D|
R2:|B | | |
R3:|C| | |

Now we have 2 ways that the results are the same, which means we are overcounting

#

The fact that we overcount more than 2 ways and it gets really complicated when it comes to counting what we overcount
