If the professor allows the student the permission to solve it by graphing, then here is the solution.
(1, 1) works.
Also, by inspection, (-1, -1) works.
If the professor will not accept graphical solution, then numerical solution may be used.

I think the student can now find $n^2 + n + 1$ for both 1 and -1

Let me word it properly:
For $n^{3 - n^2} = 2n^2 - 1$
LHS = RHS will work for n = 1 and n = -1
