#How do we know that we have to subtract in this equation?

$(1.) \ 4x - 4 = x + (17 - 4x) \ (2.) \ 4x - 4 = x + 17 - 4x \ (3.) \ 4x - 4 = 17 - 3x \ (4.) \ 7x = 21 \ (5.) \ x = 3 \$ Which serial number did you not understand?

In step 2, how did you know to subtract x with 3x on the right side? in the second equation i mentioned we for some reason needed to add the x instead of subtracting
ok lemme explain what I did:
step 1. the equation
step 2. open the brackets
step 3. simplify the right hand side by combining like temrs (x - 4x) into -3x
step 4. moving x to one side, numbers to one side (adding 3x on both sides and 4 on both sides to do them)
step 5. divide by 7 on both sides
this makes sense but why is it that you in this other equation would simplify this by adding x to 3 thus making 4x?
x = 3x – (12 – x)
<=>
x = 4x – 12
like how do you know when to subtract and when to add when combining the like terms
Open out the brackets:
3x -(12 - x) = 3x - 12 + x = 4x - 12
$-(12-x) = -12 + x$

now im even more confused lol, which equation is this? the first or second one i started mentioned in my original post

but why wouldn't this give
x=3x-x -12
<=>
x=2x -12?
-(12-x) = -(12) - (-x) = -12 + x [two negatives make a positive]
any videos that can explain it? i think ill start listening to someone explain it now lol
