Average rate of change over and interval can be calculated using
$\frac{f(x_1)-f(x_0)}{x_1-x_0}$
where x0 and x1 are the endpoints of the interval
Equivalently the average rate of change is the slope of the line passing through (x0,f(x0)) and (x1,f(x1))
