This is a geometric series. What do you know about geometric series?

bronze cape
#

aahl??

misty plaza
#

Thing is the formula it's self is a sum to infinity no?

#

So then what values to give a finite sum

#

Im confused

misty plaza
bronze cape
#

cool im an alumni

#

anyways

#

if x = 1, how would you evaluate the sum?

misty plaza
bronze cape
#

is uwc a school

#

i did do ib though

#

hls were chem, aa, and eng lit a

#

sls were econ, japanese b, and spanish b

misty plaza
bronze cape
#

oops

#

U japanese?

bronze cape
#

no im chinese

bronze cape
#

assuming it converges

#

ie, when would an infinite geometric series converge?

misty plaza
#

ohhhhhhhh

#

when r is less than 1

misty plaza
bronze cape
#

but i had been learning japanese for 2 years at that point and i was almost done so i was like why not

#
  • it wasnt too difficult either
bronze cape
#

so using that information can you figure out part a?

misty plaza
#

i see so when it converges thats when a sum to infinity gives a finite sum apply the modulus r is less than 1

#

right?

#

i really did not know this , like i would just apply the formula without understanding😭

bronze cape
misty plaza
#

idk why i took it

#

how do i become good in japanese😭

bronze cape
#

i think its the most difficult language for native english speakers to learn personally

#

i know chinese so that helps with the kanji portion a lot

bronze cape
#

that's what i did

bronze cape
#

practice as in interacting with native speakers if you can

#

but make sure to take in all forms of japanese media--whether that be music, shows, podcasts, etc

#

also try to think in japanese if possible, that's what i personally feel is the best way to get fluent in a language

#

if you can think in the language (especially while you do certain tasks) then your fluency will naturally become better

#

this is for listening/speaking

#

as for reading/writing it's still practice

#

i would mainly say focus on reading japanese media such as newspapers, articles, diary entries, etc.

#

while short stories and books are also good i would advise against that early on

bronze cape
#

mainly because they take time to understand and can be difficult

misty plaza
#

what can i read with little kanji knowledge

#

i only know hiragana n katakana

bronze cape
#

i would say learn some more kanji then is my advice

#

i assume you are doing ib at a school right (stupid question but)

bronze cape
#

also be patient in the process of learning japanese--its not something that comes quickly (this applies to all languages)

#

there's a lot of kanji and grammar that needs to be learned just to understand some simple things

misty plaza
#

btw what were your ib subjects

bronze cape
#

hls were chem, aa, and eng lit a
sls were econ, japanese b, and spanish b

#

aa math oops if that wasn't obvious

misty plaza
#

what did u do your ee on

bronze cape
#

linguistics

misty plaza
#

whats that

bronze cape
#

the study of language

#

i was gonna do a math one but i realized i wanted to do linguistics more

#

im talking about the ee subject btw

misty plaza
#

😭

bronze cape
#

i had a lot of possible ideas

#

im majoring in math though lol that's why i held off on it

misty plaza
#

i wanna do a chem ee

bronze cape
#

ooh

#

make sure you set enough time for yourself

#

because you'll have to spend a lot of time in the lab for that

misty plaza
#

but apparently its impossible to get an A

bronze cape
#

for a chem ee? i think it's possible

#

can't really speak much on it though since i don't know anyone who did a chem ee

misty plaza
#

plus im not the smartest in chemistry

bronze cape
#

mainly because we have to write our ee's over the summer so the lab is not normally open during the summer, you'd have to do everything at home

#

chem is a lot of practice

#

luckily it got easier i believe though right?

misty plaza
#

i just extremely love it

bronze cape
#

yeah chem is really fun

bronze cape
bronze cape
#

so afaik if you do a chem ee you have to conduct an experiment

#

essentially think of it as your chem ia but on a much bigger scale

misty plaza
bronze cape
#

you?

#

i think they removed the options last year

misty plaza
bronze cape
#

may 24

#

so now ur only tested on core

misty plaza
#

but passion wont always lead to good grades

bronze cape
#

yeah i agree

#

its passion + hard work

misty plaza
bronze cape
#

yeah so you guys dont have the options anymore

#

you only have a paper 1 and 2 now i think

#

for my year we had papers 1 2 and 3

misty plaza
#

theres kids in my class who already know the chemistry stuff we are learning😭

#

theyd do better in the ees

#

as for me struggling🧍‍♀️

bronze cape
#

is this your first year

misty plaza
bronze cape
#

a lot of the stuff at the beginning of year 1 may have been covered elsewhere

#

in prior grades

#

or maybe they're just studying

#

a lot

misty plaza
#

why do the make the ees in the last year😭

#

i mean in takes a lot of time n effort

bronze cape
#

well i assume that's how most schools do it

#

if you want to get a jumpstart on your ee i would say brainstorm research questions

#

a good research question can go a long way--iirc you are also graded on the scope of your ee question so

#

ok i have to head out now but best of luck with your studying!

To have a finite sum, the term must be smaller than 1 now just find the values for which
2x/x+1 < 1
