If you were to substitute one equation into itself you don't solve for a or b for example if you sub 7 = 2a + b into itself by first making b the subject you would get 7 - 2a = b then I'll sub it into itself to get 7 = 2a + (7 - 2a) then simplifying gives 7 = 7
