so if we follow the order of operations here in Australia (BEDMSA) brackets, exponents, division, multiplication, subtraction, addition
(12-5x2) 5x2=10 so 12-10 = 2 and 144/2 is 72 not 42?
7 x 12 ÷ 2
7√(144) = 7 x 12

I thought the radical was to find the base with an exponent and the value?

yes but √(12x12) = 12

7√144 is 82 then the rest is basically divided by 2

the n root is hard to use and requires advanced mathematics knowledge
in this exercise you just have to use the square root
which is this with n=2 and which has special properties that make it easy to use

the square root of 7 isn't 144 though
144 = 12*12 = 12^2
7 * square root of 144 is 7* 12
so what's the square root of 49 if you understood correctly

I don't think I am at that stage of pre algebra yet
I am going to go back to studying tysm man for helping me understand the problem
so step by step :
you check if it's a remarkable value like 4 or 49 or 16 or 9 etc (which is not for 552)
you check if you can find a remarquable value within the square root
like a = b*c and you know the square root of b so you can simplify it
In this case 552 = 4 times 138
so you transform √552 into √4 * √138
You know that square root of 4 is 2 so you can simplify it by √552 = 2√138
after this step you repeat for c to simplify it another time into c = d*e etc etc
in this case you can't simplify √138
so the final result of the simplification is 2√138
it's hard to approximate the value of it but you can use a near remarkable value
