@sudden birch To do the sign diagram, just look where the the curve is above/below the x-axis
At x = 1, the curve has a vertical asymptote (the dotted vertical line). That means that it's not defined for x = 1 !
No, 1 is not positive, the little dotted lines above it means that it's an impossible value
The key answers say otherwise
The function never intersects with x = 1

If this is the key answer, the DOTTED little line above the 1 mean that 1 is not defined

but why is 1 positive if its under the x axis
For x = 1: The function is UNDEFINED. That means it's neither positive nor negative! That's why you draw a little dotted line ABOVE the 1 to represent that it's undefined.
1 IS NOT positive !!!
Well the part to RIGHT of 1 is positive, you can see it on the graph. The function is above the x-axis for x > 1.
