why is the answer to this 53/90 and not 53/30? why do i multiply by 1/3?

i did 2/3 + 3/5 then that answer + 1/2

#

which gave 53/30

I read this as each triangle is equal in area to each of the large rectangles (upper left and upper right). So that's 4 equal area parts (each contains 25% or 1/4 of the total area)

#

So that gave me (2/3)(1/4) + (3/5)(1/4) + 1/4 .... 2/12 + 3/20 + 1/4 => 136/240 => 68/120 => 17/30

#

Which this also equals 51/90

The only problem with this, is "the entire shape" it asks for is everything, so 100% of the total area is the whole. Your approach has no relationship in the triangles and the rectangles, they're all just separate shapes of an undefined whole in your case. I set my parts as 25% each of the whole (which is how I understood the problem statement), so the upper left was 2/3 of 25% of the whole area, for example. Then when I added them I was adding up a fraction (orange) of the whole shape.

Lol I get 51/90... but try what I did and double check. If you trust the answer key, then I didn't read the problem statement correctly. I just don't think how you went about solving it was correct as it's fraction of the whole shape (total of everything), not sum of sections that are unrelated to each other.

so maybe u read incorrectly?

loud spade
#

I guess so... but if so, then I don't quite understand "the whole shape" if there's nothing in the problem statement relating the triangles to the rectangles...

crisp bramble
#

ig because the shapes are connected maybe

#

thank u for ur explanations

You're not given any dimensions to infer size relationship though

i see

So your triangles could be 99% of the total (whole shape), and those rectangles are 1%

#

But at least I came very close my way at 51/90 .... assuming it meant each shape was 25% or 1/4 of the total whole
