When adding fractions, you want to express both fractions to have the same common denominator

As an example, say, adding 1/2 and 1/3

Multiply the top and bottom of 1/2 by the denominator of 1/3. That is, 3.

So $\frac{1}{2}=\frac{1\cdot 3}{2\cdot 3}=\frac{3}{6}$

Now, both fractions have the same bases. $$\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{3}=\frac{3}{6}+\frac{2}{6}$$

To add fractions with the same base, you add the numerators, but keep the denominator unchanged
