thanks appreciate the help 👍🏻
Np bro
are you studying mathematics at universtiy?
Yeah, I'm in my 3rd year
that makes sense
i didn't think you'd have the time to help people doing a level maths if you're in uni
I'm on my winter break rn so I've got time haha
i thought you would be starting back tomorrow
im from wales
cool
im guessing you assumed that cause my pfp
I assumed that from u saying that school starts on the 8th
Canada
ah right
im planning on going to uni to do maths in uni in september do you think there is a big difference between uni and highschool
I think there's a pretty big difference for sure
In uni you'll be taking a lot of proof-based math classes, and the kind of thinking that is required to write proofs is quite different from the logic needed to computational maths
A lot of people find the transition from numerical math classes like algebra and calc to more conceptual ones to be jarring, but if you thoroughly understand the material from hs you'll be good
alright thats good to know
do you spend most of your time only focusing on maths or do you get a lot of time to do stuff outside of education
I try to maintain a balance
throughout the majority of the academic year i'll spend maybe 2hrs outside of class reading and doing homework
which gives me a lot of time to dedicate to other stuff
that sounds pretty chill i just need to start focusing more cause since covid i havent really been paying attention and attending all of my classes even though when im in class i tend to be one of the ones doing best outside of class and during tests i've been struggling a lot and recieved a low grade last year due to that
The same thing happened to me during my final year of hs. All of my classes were online so I found it difficult to muster the motivation necessary to attend every single one and pay attention. I mostly slept through them haha
I think that if you brush up on your understanding before ur first uni class you'll be set
thats literally what i did i think the work i did in that time was so easy now and i did good in all of that and this year i look back at last year and all the work seems so easy but then when i do it just doesnt add up
before covid i would be getting a 100% almost everytime then i just did nothing in covid and my teachers were all sending letters and shit cause before that i wouldnt even try that hard but i would be putting a bit above the bare minimum and i would have no trouble at all
Happens to the best of us. During my first year of uni I had to drop several courses due to literally not doing anything
in canada do you do multiple subjects at once?
strange things happen to your psychological state and academic motivation when you're forced to stay indoors all day
yeah
I'm taking 4 courses rn
i would much rather that cause then i would be less likely to get drained/bored but for uni i have to do a single subject
im hoping it wont be too difficult learning in english instead of welsh
its good that its mostly numbers but it can be hard to find how to do certain questions
For some of the more advanced concepts you'll study at uni, the textbooks contain very few numbers. Mostly paragraphs upon paragraphs with symbology sprinkled in between. I think you'll do fine though bc you seem fluent
yeah i basically use english all the time its just in school
i think ill be fine its just some mathematical terms i have to google translate
im doing maths and phyics in hs ill be finishing in like june ill be 18 so i dont know if youd still be at college at that age?
Yeah, I'll be in college until April of 2026. I need to take an additional year since I spent my first year studying medicine/biochem instead of math
thats fair enough do you have any ideas of what you'd like to do after college?
I'll probably apply to graduate school. Idk if i'd like to continue studying math, but I'll probably end up in a quantitative field for sure. Maybe physics or computer science
What about you?
ive been thinking about what i want to do after high school for the past like 2 years and havent been able to decide so i thought id just carrying on persuing what i've always been best at which is maths, and hopefully when i attend university i'll be able to play basketball more and improve. As of now i have no idea what ill do after university( if i get in to one) or what ill do instead of university. I use to just want to do whatever paid me the most money now im leaning more towards just playing basketball as much as i can
Cool. Figuring things out as you go is a good idea
i dont want to just sit around ive done to much of that since getting halo 4 in like 2014 at like 7 most my life has been sitting down
Fair enough
Hanging out with friends, occasionally going back home to see family, the usual
do you live far away from your family then?
Yeah, about 200km
yeah if i go to uni in of the top 2 places i want t go ill be a pretty similar distance
whats the drinking age in canade 18,19?
19
how old are you now 21?
20
whats the driving age like 16?
yeah, as soon as you turn 16 you can take a driving test called the G1
It's a written, multiple choice test that covers road signs and driving rules
after you take it you can drive under the supervision of someone who has their full license
if you want to drive by urself u have to take a test called the G2 which is a practical test
so if you get your driving license your friend who coudlve passed like a week ago can be in the car and you can just drive like that?
if someone doesnt know how to process the clutch and everything then how can he/she even drive in supervision of anybody
Legally you're allowed to drive, but i agree that the law's kinda stupid
whats like car insurance prices over there like?
same in uk
Most people with their G1 license practice in empty parking lots for a bit before actually driving on roads
No idea as I don't have a car lol
yo is @storm zodiac ur canadian tour guide or smth like what are u even asking lol
i had a maths question then just talking about uni and stuff
i got another maths questions dont worry
idk tbh
nah u can ask him questions but its so off topic lmao
anyways roads and traffic is a mess in my country
Where are u from mummychor
I need to expand this in ascending powers of x up to x^3 I remember this being pretty easy at the time but my mind is blank now
everything is difficult bro there are like 1.5 billion people here
China?
india
yeah
wdym
what do i do with that expression?
yeah same i'm confused lol
Like I need to expand it i think
but i live in mumbai so its alright here
expand it to what
like send the complete question
It’s in welsh
bruv
welsh is a language?
This is why learning in welsh is bad
Not a very spoken one
that shit looks worse than german to me
shit boutta be extinct
So if or when I move out of wales I just know a useless language
its says up to and includes x^3
just cube it
Expand 1+2x in ascending powers of x up to and including the term in x' State for which range of values the expansion is valid.
This is it translated
Surely can’t be that ways
Easy
The equation is wrong in the translation
its 4-x/sqrt(1-2x) ?
oh ok
the question is a bit wrong here
it should be for which values of real numbers in the domain is a subset of
maybe i translated it wrong? i remember doing a question that sounded similar a few months ago just cant really remember what do now
Same bro, idk what the question's asking for when it tells you to "expand" the expression
nah its not that lmao
send us anothe question
its like the only question i got left except for 1 or 2 "geometry sequence" ones
send it
may or not be in welsh
just translate it for us
i can try
The pth term of a geometric series is equal to 16. The (p + I)th term of this gyre is equal to 24. Find the (p + 4)th term of the series. [3] (b) The sum of the first three terms of another geometric series is 22.8. The sum to infinity of the series is 18.75. Find the common ratio and the first term of this geometric series. [6]
Might not be perfect
what does gyre mean
okay
think i got part a right
ratio is 1.5 so p+2nd term will be 24(1.5), p+3rd term will be 24(1.5)^2, p+4th term will be 24(1.5)^3 so 81
yeah
just unsure about part b
its 81
how did you determine that?
im talking about the first part
oh
mb
The sum of the first three terms can be represented by the eq a + ar + ar^2 = 22.8
and the sum to inifinity can be represented by a/1-r
i got two equations a(1+r+r^2) = 22.8 and a/(1-r) = 18,75
= 18.75 right?
that makes sense for some reason i was only thinking ar^2 not a + ar + ar^2
then do i swap a in to the equation?
or am i wrong
divide them u get a quadratic in r
solve it and u get 2 roots of the quadratic
choose the r with r<1 as it is an infinite series
is it ok? @compact laurel
all most caught up give me a second
kk
reject the first one
yeah
as negative r cannot provide a positive sum
yeah
cuz the negative sign can change every alternate term right
so it can add up i think?
idk
probably no
but why do they give u so terrible numbers?
just mean like that
Find the sum of eighteen (eighteen) the first term of the geometric series 100 + 80 + 64 + … Give your answer correct to the nearest whole number. ) The second term of a geometric series is - 20. The sum to infinity of the series is 64. (i) Show that r, the common ratio of the series, satisfies the equation 16r^2 - 16г-5 = 0. (in) Find the value of r, giving a reason for your answer.
Done most of this
Has to be right I think cause I proved it
it cant just be as easy as 5/4 or -1/4
how did you get that
where did 4/5 and 1/5 come from
sum = a(1-r^n)/1-r
somehow im still unsure
yeah i get taht
u have to know it to solve the question
but still dont know where you got 4/5 and 1/5
you find the common ratio in a geometric series by dividing any two consecutive terms
like here i divided the second term by first term
so 80/100 and like 64/80
so did you just do 1- 4/5 to get 1/5
yes
okay
i think im good now
i dont kow how i didnt see that
i got one last question if you're able to help
no worries
its pretty similar
sure
The eighth and ninth terms of a geometric series are 576 and 2304, respectively. Find the fifth term of the geometric series. (b) The first term of another geometric series is a and a common ratio is r. The third term of this geometric series is 24. The sum of the second, third and fourth terms of the gyres is - 56. Show that r satisfies your equation 3r^2 + 10r + 3 = 0. Knowing that |r|<1, find the value of r and sum to infinity of the series.
maybe 576/2304 and 1-576/2304?
so like s= (576(1- (576/2304)^24/1728/2304
r= 576/2304
?
1/4
if so what would be the point in it giving me 3r^2 + 10r +3 =0
nevermind
thats a different part lol
just get the two equations according to the questions
on solving them u will get a quadratic
which will be the quadratic given in the question
then just find its roots given that |r| < 1
then find the sum of infinite terms with the formula which i told u earlier
u get ar + ar^2 + ar^3 = -56 and ar^2 = 24
yeah i got that
put the value of ar^2 in the first one
ar + ar^3 = -80?
(ar + ar^3)/ar^2 = -80/24
ar + ar^2 +ar^3 = -56 / ar + ar^3 = -80
does this seem right to you for the last part?
noo its totally wrong
how
oh
yeah
what do you think the best way to get a is then
like 576 share with 4
like 8 times?
from there you can get a as well
okay
.
i got 44
conic sections
i translated it and still didnt recognise it
i dont noramlly remember the names of anything im doing
did u learn it
to be honest them words dont really mean anything to me
nothing comes to mind at all
i mightve done it
bro its english
i learn in welsh
idk tbh
how old r u
17
lol same
damn
damn bruh
lol
i thik i done it wrong
what
i used r=4 when in the end im meant to be getting r<1
isnt that for a different question?
maybe
get some sleep
well
its like 5am there
how many subjects did you do at 15
i was in 10th grade when i was 15
so how many subjects was you studying then
10
thats why we are asians
i shouldve been born there
believe me u guys have more perks there
you think?
well anyways anychance you can help me get a and r in the last question i need to do back up the chat
lol
yes
get some sleep then
thanks for all the help man i really appreciate it
no worries
Post marked as solved by @compact laurel.
Use .unsolved if this was a mistake.
happy schooling ig idk
