hi! i'm taking a refresher course online on basic algebra, and am confused on why i got two questions wrong.
so im gonna post them here
the question
Factor completely: 2t^2−10t+12
answer i gave
2(t-6)(t+1)
response given
Incorrect. Once you factor out the GCF, the leading coefficient is 1, so you would need two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to −5. Watch your signs!
i thought I had done this correctly, -6 and 1 multiplying to 6 and adding to -5.
second question
What is the greatest common factor of 9xy^2+6x^2y^2+21y^3?
answer i gave
3y^2
response given
Incorrect (no explanation?????)
again, i thought this was correct because 3 is the largest factor for all parts of the polynomial, and you can only take away y^2 from all parts.
im just confused on why they're wrong and would appreciate any insight, thank you
