Btw my Current answer is:

Common Factor = 7x
Remaining Factor = -x - 8 + 7x
Factored Form = (7x)(-x - 8 +7x)

Try multiplying the 7x back into the brackets, and you will see whether it's right or not.

So when you multiplied back in, you didn't get the same thing

You can't. The point is that your answer didn't work when you checked it, so you have the wrong answer.

As for a negative gcf, you can always have a negative gcf. It's personal choice whether you want to or not.

My personal taste is that I want the leading coefficient inside the brackets to be positive, so I would use a negative gcf here as you did so that x^2 is positive inside the brackets.
