The reason why is
P = -37
R = -7
and the distances
PQ = Q-P = Q-(-31) = Q+31
QR = R-Q = -7-Q
so a ratio of PQ to QR being 7 to 1 implies PQ/QR = 7 which implies PQ = 7QR.
using the values for PQ and QR found Q+31 = 7(-7-Q) = -49-7Q
hence Q+7Q = 8Q = -49-31 = -80.
thefore Q=-10.

the faster way is just to do what I did in my first message tho. cut up the entire distance and into the sum of the numerator and denominator (7+1=8) parts and then Q is the seven of those parts in distance past P.
