I think you’re supposed to say that if you do it naively, you’ll do xxx….*x 100 times

But in a more efficient way you could calculate x^2 at first and do x^2 * x^2 * … * x^2 50 times. So now you did 51 multiplication instead of 100

And again you can calculate x^2 * x^2 =x^4 and then do x^4 * … * x^4 25 times. And you are now down to doing 27 multiplications instead of 50 And you can continue like that
