Try to rewrite what you are given:
Food total: 20
Food after return: 8
=> Food disposed of: 12
Time outside kitchen: x minutes
The above is describing the case of Fergus leaving the kitchen for an unknown amount of time (x [this is the time you need to solve for]).
We also know that:
If "Food after return" (let's call it y) is equal to 0, Fergus would need to be 2 minutes (t=2) longer out.
We also know, that the speed of disposal is 12 Food per x minutes.
So now we calculate:

What you wanna do is construct 2 sets of equations
Both of which contain the unknown time x.
So we know that there is a constant speed of food disposal.
We can express the first argument as a function f(t)

Since the speed of disposal is constant, we have to be looking at a polynomial of first degree. The genaral form for which is
f(t)=mt+b

Then we substitute the points A(f(0), 20) and B(f(x), 8)
As for the second equation:
Since we know that for a speed of 20 food per minute all food is disposed of after x+2 minutes, we can construct a second function g(t) by the same logic as shown above.

Fergus served his infant a 20-ounce bowl of Cream of Wheat, and then left the kitchen to check on his daughter. The infant, who hated hot cereal, immediately began emptying his bowl by throwing 1/2 ounce spoonfuls of the cereal at the wall. If he had thrown one more spoonful per minute, and if his dad had stayed out of the kitchen an extra two minutes, he would have just succeeded in disposing of his breakfast. As it turned out, 8 ounces of Cream of Wheat left when Fergus returned. How long was Fergus out of the kitchen.
