So the question is asking you to solve equation of 7+5(x-3)=22 for x. There can only be one solution that fits in here that makes the left side of the equation equal the right side (i.e., equal to 22).
So anything that is of the shape of 5(x-3) means that you multiply the 5 with the brackets. Mathematicians are just lazy and don't write the multiplication sign in such cases. I would first subtract on both sides 7 and then divide by 5 on bot sides. This way you get rid of the 5(x-3) and are left with x-3
The answer is 6, if you wouldn't have found it.
This is how I'd do it:
- move the 7 to the other side: 5(x-3) = 22- 7 --> + becomes -
- get rid of brackets: 5x-15 = 15
- move 15 to other side: 5x = 15+15
This leaves us with the following: 5x = 30
We can solve this in one step: x = 30/5
With these steps, the answer is 6
