you want to use the tops rows to eliminate the variables in the bottom rows, until you end up with equations that look like a staircase

for the first one, the second row has no x's so you dont need to do anything at first, but -2(row 1) + row 3 -> row 3 would elimante the x's from row 3

then use the 2nd row to eliminate the y's from the 3rd row
