me neither 😭
i remeber just turning up to school and getting told im sitting the olympiad paper thing
Got to the second round for the people that arent smart enough to do the actual thing
I remember asking my teacher to sign me up for a math competition thing that leads to IMO. He was like sure. Nothing happened from that point
I once went to the second qualifying round, looked at the questions and left as soon as they let us
yeah im kinda glad i got to the second round for losers, i got like 3 poinst on it or somthing
the jump is massive
imagine if that is actually just terence tao shitposting
if terence tao had an alt on this server who would it be
jacobian
who
jacobian
sorry that joke requires about 3 hours of deep server lore (TM) to understand
let me think of a simpler one
@polar panther
what about ecneret?
I feel like I have heard the name jacobian before
he wasn't the guy that said the 0 map wasn't a linear transformation, right?
that was like hank or something
that wasnt him
well everyone is a jacobian alt
so it technically was him
but it wasnt
Was jacobian the "topologies are glorified semilattices" guy?
no.

anyone wanna have a discussion about differentials? I find them fascinating yet strange
the fact that dy/dx is written as a fraction when you shouldn't treat it as a fraction but you can manipulate it like a fraction (e.g. separation of variables) is just weird
Differentials are invented by physicists to make equations easier to parse. There is no real mathematical object that a differential "is"
You can split them and recombine them because the chain rule is pretty
Abuse of notation sounds like a bad thing, but u-sub and separation of variables are very handy
urge to nitpick rising
I don't mean differentials in terms of differential geometry
darn.
Wrong. Differentials are invented to distribute power efficiently between two wheels 😌
Differentials as discussed in physics and odes are a lie
Ahh shoot I always forget about those
Differential forms in diff geo are real
I see, so what's the proper form? should dy/dx really just stay f'(x)?
thats ambiguous in a context with more than just one variable
im really only talking about single variable for simplicity
then you can treat them as fractions without issue
as long as youre not dumb about it
yes
it should be partial f / partial x
how so?
in a multivar context
you couldn't do separation of variables?
just... try any example of manipulating partial derivatives as fractions
itll probably break
is there a specific reason as to why?
separation of variables kind of works but with modification
you cant just treat it as naive fractions anymore
a better question to ask is why the single variable case works
naively we'd have no reason to think it does
besides the suggestive notation
makes sense
because single variable is like a super simplified case, so it works out coincidentally, right?
coincidentally is a bit overly dismissive, theres deep reasons why it works
if you look at exterior algebras and whatnot, its "obvious" the dimension=1 case collapses into simple multiplication of differential forms
but that requires a background in analysis to explain
any differential geometry?
nope lol
multilinear algebra of function spaces?
no lmao
cant help you then
Lol
unfortunate
you can try reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exterior_algebra and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_form
key word: try
but idk if thatll help
yeah it hasn't helped, hopefully I'll be able to understand this at some point, but thanks for trying lmao :')
why not read Loring Tu's intro to manifolds
any prerequisites for that? @bold ferry
you should know a bit of linear algebra. i learned algebra stuff which i didnt know along the way @ancient flame
like familiarity with dual space, dual basis,....are needed
he discusses all these things so u should be good
and later, u will need topology @ancient flame
oh
topics u will need are discussed in appendix of the book
vtuber is doing a "math challenge"
stream titled "let's solve all the equations!"
pain
I know a vtuber who does math streams sometimes
tfw no vtuber to watch calculate the fundamental group of a wedge of n circles
Yeah the vtuber I have in mind does logic stuff
logic and final fantasy 14
Yes

do they also play league
no, this is the same person i was thinking of
people who try to do all topology via order theory annoy me somewhat
well idk. i think pointless topology is interesting because the locale/frame is what you need to do sheaf theory.
sounds pointless
yeah people say this about most sheaf theory/category theory lol. rip
but i tried to read this book called "monoidal topology" which is all about trying to do topology with quantales and it was less than engaging lol
"Posets are just the lax eilenberg-moore algebras of the category of sets and relations enriched over posets"
same thing with metric spaces
no i was just making a joke
i know, dw
I did actually read a legit book review recently of a textbook on sheaf theory where the reviewer was just like
"This book is garbage because sheaf theory is not real math"
lmao
he was like "Category theory and sheaf theory are a language and don't need a whole textbook on them. sheaves should be at most a single chapter in a book on Riemann surface theory or differential geometry, plus a handful of exercises. this book is actively deceptive because it proceeds definition-lemma-theorem-proof and thus conveys to the reader the impression that they are reading mathematics, however, as we have said, sheaf theory is not mathematics, it is a language. Real mathematics is, essentially, geometry."
it was such a hot take my god
one of my favorite books is on sheaf cohomology so i was just like, damn, what an asshole lmao
lol
which book
i see lmao
Godement's book on sheaves in algebraic topology, Topologie Algebrique et Theorie des Faisceaux
help me do this i got 400
it's mostly a standard textbook but there's one piece of originality which is that he gives a "simplicial" formulation of sheaf cohomology, like instead of a resolution of a sheaf being an exact sequence of injective sheaves, a resolution of F is a cosimplicial object in the category of sheaves augmented by F. he then proves that like, all the usual formulas from singular cohomology to define the cup product and so on translate into sheaf cohomology using the simplicial structure. very cool
so like, the Alexander-Whitney formula for the cup product
or the Steenrod squaring operations

it's also a good introduction to spectral sequences at a very limited level of generality, which is nice because spectral sequences are mega complicated so introducing them at like 20% power and then using them to prove a bunch of cool shit is a very good approach pedagogically
and motivates learning more about them later on
gelfand and manin's section on spectral sequences is pretty nice
i like gelfand and manin. like gelfand and manin, godement's book starts by stressing simplicial methods, he usually works with simplicial Abelian groups rather than chain complexes
they're hard!
lol
sometimes they're a bit brusque for my taste because they kind of gloss over some technicalities that are easy once you get what's going on but like
you shouldn't gloss over technicalities in the statement of an exercise that the student is going to have to figure out on their own midway through
Quick question can you give a certain number a variable and use that variable in a calculation for example : 12.14 = a / (a +4)/2 = 8.07
or would that be illegal in exams
can you ask your question again a little more clearly?
what do you mean give "give a number a variable", and why is 12.14 = 8.07
sorry my english is bad im trying to say if you can give a certain number a variable and use that variable in your calculation
if you do it right and following all the basic arithmetic rules, there should be no problem
It's just replacing one symbol with another
it just makes it quicker to calculate when using big numbers
because sometimes i want to use the precise number when calculating and i dont want to write the whole number down
as long as you do it correctly, yeah
what you wrote above wouldn't be allowed because you wrote it in a way that it seems you're saying 12.14 = 8.07
most likely, yeah, but do be careful to not leave it up to the grader's interpretation
stuff requiring more than a couple neuron seconds doesn't tend to be well-received

I have attended school a little late and the lesson I have are sequences, are there any tricks to help me solve problems faster?
17 is my favorite sequence
and answers are like n^2 + 1
I see
Its pattern recognition
i thought there were tricks haha
And pattern recognition is just practice
There are “tricks” but the “tricks” are just made up of intuition you build through seeing a lot of examples
it blew my mind as a kid that the difference between consecutive squares are the odd numbers
You should familiarise yourself with arithmetic/geometric progressions, and practice these problems more and more.
but thanks for letting me know, It's a relief that I asked this before learning it. Atleast I now know that there's no shortcuts
thanks Manan and MaxJ
But seriously the larger your internal library of examples is the more you’ll be able to fly through these
there are general ways to go about too, like checking the differences between consecutives in the list and stuff like that

MaxJ #PatternRecognitionPro
Lol
We both get paid to do math lol
i haven't been paid yet
Oh me either
get paid to sit around, the math is just a side hobby
also
Max excels at finding low dimensional patterns
i really think if you're being paid to be a student it doesn't count
The equivalent of an intern
i'll consider myself a professional once i pass my oral qual
When i was younger we had to do shit like this
and i was too minibrained to look at them and be like oh that's obviously 12n^2 + 1232 + 324n

i overthink alot
You can do some linear algebra fuckery with this tho
my brain is smooth like butter
You can first assume that the sequence is given by a degree n polynomial p(n)
now take in p(0), p(1), p(2), p(3) etc and then solve these simeltaniously for their coefficients
our n starts with (1)
You get Ax = b and A is pretty much always invertible for whatever n you choose so you get x = A^-1 b, and the vector x contains your coefficients you want, plug them into the polynomial before and voila
its a bit long but if you have a decent calculator itll be quicker i thinks
esp if u can save the matrices or sth like that
this is too complicated for my brain by i think i can manage
Once im done eating ill work an example for u
sure thanks
It's what i did
It worked for me
tbh i cant understand shit, even what's written on this powerpoint
ok tbf you can analyze lots of recurrences with linalg
I think its fine advice as long as you guess enough forms... if poly fitting doesnt work try an exponential fit
or an exp * poly or something, idk how hard these sequences are lol
I mean this is going to be mainly easier sequences
but at the same time im horrible at pattern recognition
the main thing is after fitting say a quadratic to 3 points.. check that it actually still works on the rest of the sequence
so i liked the easy algorithm of the aforementioned method
So so cursed
Also
Completely fails for recursive sequences
Which iirc aren’t uncommon

I mean, if you're studying such finite sequences of integers, in all likelihood it would be a combination of arithmetic/geometric progressions of some nature
what kind of recursive sequence would they be asking you to get a closed form for that this wouldnt work?
Well i did assume they are polynomials, im assuming this isnt going to be anything recursive
if they are asking you to get a closed form, presumably you can fit it..
you're recursive
im cursive
cocursive
it's arithmetic
I think it’s not uncommon for the pattern to be like
“Add 4 to the previous number and multiple by the one before it”
Something like this
I guess it depends on the syllabus
Since the time i was doing the poly fitting shit was when
this can be fit right? thats yucky in any case
but its some sum of exp * polys? solving the recurrence?
we didn't have any recursion in our syllabus
The only exams where I've seen pattern recognition in sequences have all been generic/non-mathy papers
So this worked pretty well 😌
No clue don’t wanna think about it lol
ryc
that has closed form! riemann zeta function

converges to 1 for all starting values, I'll omit the proof as it's a simple application of certain methods
What about this sequence $a_n=$ the cardinality of $\pi_{m+n}S^n$ for large $n$
Do you have induction in your curriculum?

@modest rune cool topology facts! For X a K3 surface, π_3(X)=Z^252 and π_4(X)=Z^3520+(Z/2Z)^42
wow looks like you wrote 123o21u38123213843284392432 instead of 123o21u38123213843284302432 :////
looks like this means you don't know how to integrate :/
study harder next time

does math twitter ever use hashtags that look like you're asking for the cardinality of a set or doing one of those products or whatever

i love the juxtaposition of math and anime in a naive google search
math is just anime
Wow, I just developed crushes on those girls in the top right
have you not seen the galois corrospondence between fields of math and subanimes
they look 14
at most
What, no way
anime has ruined your brain.
based but they do competition math so
dude their heads are like half the size of their upper bodies
you cant convince me they're older than 14
admittedly though those legs are long as shit
what
yes
Namington has lots of experience
idk, cynthia stoner, and shyam narayanan
actually you probably knew that if you posted the pic
nice 👍
wait i had no clue stoner transitioned
now i feel bad for posting a pre-transition pic
unresolved mystery: the guy on the left is in a different pic
the guy on the right looks awkward
but this is exactly how my dumbass would stand
not to be insensitive but why should we feel bad?
so the general idea is that, pre-transition stuff like a dead name or pictures or w/e can trigger dysphoria, and also is in general considered disrespectful to the trans person
hmm most I know do but also there are cases where people dont have dysphoria i think? im not super well educated on the nuances of that lol
i just use the rule of thumb of avoiding anything pre transition that could be harmful
ill follow suite
and whatever the person tells me is ok/not ok
You don't have to have dysphoria to be trans, but a lot of trans people do have dysphoria
Posting pictures of you pre-transition is akin to like
hm
constantly reminding you of your childhood in a sense
. In this analogy trans people are seen a children (i.e. who they were before) constantly
No not necessarily
Bad analogy but you get what i mean
What's the difference
Well there doesnt need to be the implication of seeing the person as a child
rather they are a different person in ideas and thought such that they cant relate as well
If im interpretting this correctly thats the feeling?
I dont know if I need to understand
im not getting what u mean
cis moment
isomer moment
lol brain washed by ochem
its over
ochem losers have entered the chat
Yea Im not meant to understand yet

ah the very related topic
Well I wont be me in 2070 hopefully

Was that bait?
this is common holocaust denying language
its holocaust denialism
usually something along the lines of "im just asking questions bro"
or is he implying it didnt happen because population is off
basically
or at least that the numbers are forged
why deny a genocide existence?
usually to imply that the nazis werent so bad.
happens in a lot of context
either that, or that the jews are pulling the strings of world politics
like ppl deny it for whats going in china
is a common recent one
idk whats happening in china besides displacement of falun dafa

armenian genocide denialism is also a big thing in turkey
and falun gong
although at least turkey doesnt try to downplay the numbers
they just say it wasnt a genocide
and rather was a contracted civil war, or was justified actions against dissidents, or was internal infighting
or whatever
What about the uighyur thing
what is uighyur
math discord tries to spell "uighur"
this is why i didnt try to spell it.
a muslim population living in western china that the government is widely believed to be engaged in active genocide against.
oh
Ok, spelling is wronh
how do i even know these things exist without internet
news media?
the chinese government itself admits to using "re-education camps" and actively discouraging islam
and trying to prevent uighurs from reproducing
im not arguing specifics im just speaking in generalities
if you believe the reports of (american-aligned) journalists and the CIA, their actions are far more aggressive than that, including forced sterilization and work-to-death camps
Has the downplay genocide strategy ever worked?
yeah a lot
well, if you want to defend the communist party of china, acknowledging "yeah theyre currently genociding some folk but thats okay" is kind of a losing battle
where they sent ppl from "educated" parts of china
holy shit you cant expect me to keep searching these hard af names
so defending the communist party kind of requires you to deny a genocide
like hell even in like canada
im in mobile
The British have committed a few genocides that people don't really know about now
ppl still deny the stuff against first nation ppl
a lot of the
which was practically genocide
And yeah Canada with first nations peoples
countries that colonized did do genocide
sure but canada continued well after occupying the territory in question
the intention wasnt just to settle the land
it was very actively to "de-indianize" the first nations
Makes sense i guess
awal mumalik
like, old laws and whatnot use precisely that term
thats what colonizers do
its literally capture the flag but irl
and everyone dies
For China/Uighurs it's a lot of tankies being like CCP good and what not
what is a tankie
see see pee
red facist
communist facist?
tankie = defender of authoritarian communism
basically
communist person who ends up just being a facist
the USSR, the CPC
or CCP or whatever acronym they prefer to use
i still dont know what facist is
often north korea as well
besides something something authority
the united states of states of russia
nazbol moment
Have any genocides ever been fiction?
ever heard of
Just devil’s advocate
The genocide of the air nomads
its really funny lol
white genocide

Oh i googled it
Ooof.

Lol pure white blood
progressive movements are authoritarian and are out to destroy the poor weak american white boys
Blood is red
It sounds weird ig
well it's been believed for a long long time that jews are planning on genociding good ol' christian folk
This stupidity is omnipresent across cultures
If you're blood is white then something is very wrong with you
Yes its not far fetched given that jews hate christians
i just have a lot of white blood cells ok
but not really, generally accusing someone of a genocide requires a fuckton of evidence
the nice part is that genocides typically produce a lot of evidence
in the form of bodies
although of course, you can hide bodies
That's why you burn the bodies
as canada recently found out
@inner finch they killed jesus.
And use the ashes as fertilizer
lol
uhhhhh
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
jewish people did xyz thing long before this must mean that all jewish people are exactly the same
not a good line chief
I thought Muslims for false prophet
its dislike in the sense
Christians for false prophet and not recognizing mohammad
its possible to think a religion is false without literally hating its practitioners
A small subset of overly religious people hating other people is not the same as saying an entire community hates another.
not really
cheistians belive muslims have false prohpet I meant
and muslims are critical of idolization of jesus
Vast majority just leave each other alone
i mean this is just religion
Yes but im speaking in religious generalities
disagreeing with each other
Yes
the correct conclusion from "interreligious conflicts exist" is not "all followers of x religion hate followers of y religion"
we are not denying the former statement
Not very sure about the still do part
we're denying the latter
Well hate/dislike
i dont think thats true either

i know christians with very close jew friends
this region has like 0 muslims so i cant say anything there
most people will be respectful to ppl with different religious beliefs
but one would expect it to be the same
Im first generation middle east and parents give impression that they are accepting of other religions but its dangerous to be atheist in some places
certainly zealots hate followers of other religions
thats like, the definition of a zealot
yeah it is
but the fact that "zealot" and "follower" are different terms
but i think thats probably more of a
should be pretty suggestive here lmao
socioeconomic meme
Yeah of course most people are accepting of diff religions
then a fully bc of religion thing
but yeah denying god can be dangerous here
also its the US' fault dont @ me
eh sure, religious conflicts are often a convenient excuse for other forms of discrimination
you're ofc going to get shit for it at the very least
like a typical US anti-muslim is more afraid of arabs than islam
indeed
I dont know most people sadly to be honest I might of only had one on ones with under 100 people
And some people are really open with their hates so its suprising
yeah i got beaten up pretty daily by religious zelouts in my school in bangladesh lol
I mainly am speaking about pakistan here
This can get kind of complex
with secretarian infighting and stuff too
if anything, i'd say that jews are uniquely tolerant towards other religions, largely for historical reasons
as well as the fact that the jewish faith doesnt really like spreading itself
Anyways gotta go
and is more inherited and whatnot
like you can convert to judaism but its rare
and jews aren't as encouraged to proselytize as other faiths
typically speaking at least
I dont know only because a lot of my palestinian friends have told me how awkward they feel at jewish functions or other things that I cant relate to
(as with anything, exceptions exist)
bye mizzy
I dont know many people mind you
gl on chem memes or w/e
israel-palestine is a pretty big exception to a lot of things lmao
I rarely have exposure to people who are practicing jewish
nevermind im back
and the hasidics in nyc arent that open in my experiences
Not suprising given their historical displacements
Similar to african diaspora and connection to the continent some of my family has
Mostly the first four points
that 34% supporting BDS is pretty representative of the "strongly pro-palestine" subpopulation of US jews
but it seems the plurality are slightly pro-israel or don't take a side
Yea but to quote someone earlier complicty in these situations doesnt really help
2/3s don't believe the israel government is actively seeking piece
the point is that the opinions of israeli jews might not line up with those of international jews
(oddly, though, it seems netanyahu has more support among US jews than he does among israelis - lmao)
Namington are you jewish by chance
no
no.
I am
The only other genocide that ive heard people say was faked was something starting with a B or A
Oh yeah
Belgium Congo genocide
I remember watching this guy who does free software stuff on youthbe
and for whatever reason he brought up a point of belgium congo genocide being fake
I truly don’t understand motivations sometimes
there's a valid argument that the congo genocide gets undue attention when basically every colonial power was doing something similar
but thats certainly a different thing than downplaying its severity lmao
undue attention?
you could argue it wasnt "genocidal" in that the goal probably wasnt to wipe out any particular race
and was instead just to milk them for as much money as they could
but thats a definitional issue that distracts from the fact that, yeah, they were putting millions through a lot of suffering and death to turn a profit
as in, the actions of other colonizers should be scrutinized just as harshly
and the congo genocide is only the "most well-known" because of heart of darkness
I dont know what heart of darkness is
a book from 1899 about the author's experiences in the congo
its not biographical, it's a fictional work about fictional characters undergoing a fictional journey
o ok
but it's based on his experiences when he toured there
er, "toured" is the wrong word, i think he worked for some company there
the point being that he saw a lot of shit
and wrote a hugely successful novel about it
Oh huh, were the other colonies treated as badly as the Congo?
that kinda woke up the eyes of europeans to the mistreatments of "savages" in africa by colonizers
I actually was under the impression that it was orders of magnitude worse there
its a bit hard to tell since its less well-documented
but the difference certainly wasnt orders of magnitudes
congo was probably the "worst" but it was far from the only place where really bad shit was happening
its just that like, coverage of south africa was "we have the maxim gun; and they do not" while coverage of the congo was joseph fucking conrad
so there's a difference in how they live on in the historical memory
online deathtolls look yikes
I guess the only point of comparison I have is Morocco
says around 9-10 mil
And Morocco's shtick with France was not that bad
south/east africa is where most of the brutality occured
what was the shtick
france owned morocco for a while but didnt really make too many extractionary attempts in it
I mean Morocco was officially a protectorate rather than a colony. And to my understanding you didn't have stuff like forced labor or heavy death tolls
They built some roads, probably told the king what to do a bunch
Please anyone know answer for this
it served some military utility as well, the north african theatre was of course very famous in ww2
@obsidian parrot #❓how-to-get-help
(though you might have better luck in physics server, see #old-network )
but yeah, turns out that a country thats 90% barely-habited desert doesnt have many resources to extract
at least excluding oil
Oh tru when Vichy France was a thing I think they told Morocco to start handing over Jewish people
and there was much more "history" between berbers and the french
And Morocco was like how about you fuck yourself
Wait I'm Berber and I didn't even know that part lol, what history?
well i phrased that poorly perhaps
(I'm not as well-informed as I should be about this stuff)
its just that french people were more... familiar with berbers/north africans in general
because of centuries of mediterranean trade
they didnt have that for south africans
Ah
far easier to dehumanize them and ignore their suffering
Hopefully all this history erases over time and the world is completely globalized
berbers often had more of a "noble savage" aspect to them
in how they were portrayed in a lot of european media
now of course the "noble savage" idea is kinda racist itself but like
far better to be a noble savage than a subhuman one
¯_(ツ)_/¯
That makes sense, and lmfao the noble savage, I wonder what that must've looked like. I didn't know if they were portrayed much at all and if so, how
@latent forge would be tough. Some would argue it shouldn't happen, idk about the merits in the abstract to weigh in on that
But with power dynamics as they are it feels tricky to imagine globalization happening unless someone with less than pure intent decides to just roflstomp everyone
Everyone would argue for it not to happen since people see erasure of culture as bad
afaik they were often seen as like, bands of muslim traders riding berb horses through their tents and deserts
and while thats not the most accurate representation, its certainly better than "jungle people spending all day killing each other with spears"
oh yeah, i'd imagine the muslim aspect helped quite a bit
like europeans at the time didnt like muslims but
they at least KNEW muslims
Tfw spanish in arabic script
muslims believed in the same god and had largely predictible and understandable religious ideas
whereas south africans were a whole other can of worms
its a lot easier to dehumanize someone if you can portray them as worshiping river spirits and shit
at least from the perspective of a monotheistic christian
now im not pretending that colonizers treated north africans 100% nicely
i mean, the various infrastructure projects the UK tried in egypt are quite infamous at this point
but they were spared from the brunt of colonial abuse
I don't actually know about this, could you elaborate?
the suez canal construction has an estimated 120k deaths attributed to it
over 11 years
Holy shit
Only 11
this was before the UK formally conquered egypt mind, but egypt was solidly in their sphere of influence
Thas a lot of people
the construction was led by a UK company and funded by UK capitalists
(though actual work was mostly done by egyptians)
tbh I wish these genocides were fake
er oops
bad history
one sec
the canal was mostly funded by french interests, not UK ones
the UK conquered it later
sorry, wires crossed a bit
the UK was opposed to it because they preferred routing trade through the cape (which they controlled)
so they bought the canal eventually?
not bought, it was legally transferred over in the 1888 convention of constantinople but de facto controlled by them for a few years earlier iirc
in that they stationed massive boats near it
which mostly didnt bother trade ships but certainly restricted military ones
Whats your opinion on expanding empires?
Do you think they should be a thing
expansionism bad
What do you do though
i currently do not own any empires.
there is only so much you can do on your own soil
i'll keep you posted once i get my hands on one
bruh
idk either lol
but i think expansionism is the easiest and least risky strategy for improving
wtf
im just thinking in hypotheticals
if i had control over a small country that could barely produce its own food and relied mostly on trade
im not sure what id do
just trade thonk
that country is not in a position to expand
lmao
i mean expansionism makes sense from the perspective of a selfish king in the 1500s
it does not make moral sense
but it makes political sense
and sure, if you want to boil down political discourse to realpolitiks you can do that
so what do you do as leader of that country to improve lives of people and in affect your own if you cant self sufficient your own land
but like, realpolitiks today says that expansionism is usually a very very bad idea
russia only barely got away with crimea
expansionism today would be shut down hard
and that was with a lot of posturing and stomaching a lot of sanctions
discord user asks other user to solve world geopolitical problems, 2021.
unfortunately i'm not so sure the math discord's gonna be able to crack this nut chief
no im just saying expansionism seems like the only natural thing to do );
but there is no moral way to handle that
because you will be destroying others to benefit
the way that most small powers nowadays are coping with their position is by aligning themselves with china and getting a fuckton of support from them
globalization isnt so bad see
well, china's interests clearly arent altruistic here
they're seeking to expand their international sphere of influence
no need
but at least for parties involved, it's mutually beneficial
yea sure
i mean full scholarships isnt that bad
and most small powers should be softlocked
because they cant make any agressive moves for improvements
gloob
i rode the bike today
my dad was holding the controls only a little it felt p good
nice

mfw still cannot ride bike
will soon take my brother out once i know how to do it fully
i can ride the non motorized ones
the motorized ones are a bit sus tho
m & m

motorbikes are p cool imo
i wanted to get one
but ya know
i cant do regular bikes lol

i did smh
do it again
What
do it again
Wait John doesn’t know how to ride a bike?
everybody laugh at john
Lmao
Damn
I didn’t know some people didn’t learn how to ride a bike
Don’t they teach you at school
I take pride in the fact that i can make ppl laugh at me
That’s like
I can't ride bikes because of the gears
they taught you how to ride a bike at school?
what
I have the perfect sol actually that makes perfect sense
@inner finch ur gonna have to teach me how to bike
No
They made us ride bikes at school
and pedal
If you didn’t know how to ride a bike I’d assume you would learn then
Lmao Brofibration
my school did not do this
Well idk I’m Australian maybe it’s different here
They also make it so you have to learn how to swim
Idk how some people in America I’ve seen in movies, they’re like “I can’t swim” like is that a thing

thonk o think
just st on the bike and pedal brofib is right
sadge
motorcycles are heavy
today i was trying to turn the bike around
shit took long af
probably bcs my dad was in the backseat but
lol
Nvm you mean motor bike
this
how does one conduct themselves during office hours
ive never been to them
what happens in them
i feel like if i go into them now i will just say hello to the professor and then sit down and say nothing because idk why im there
what do u do during office hours tutorial pls
You do that except you say something
Your doubts?
oh
okay
that
makes sense
um so do i just don't go to them if i don't have a question
okay
no you can go if you don't have questions too
sometimes to listen to other students' questions
or to extend the ideas brought up in class
ok that sounds good too
i was just wondering because ppl say to go to them but idk what to do in them
but yes ty for advice all
I’ve heard it’s good to go to office hours at least once to introduce yourself and make a connection? Is that a good idea?
Very important when you take differential geometry for sure
Cool
If other people are there observe
like the main way I built connections with professors that gave me okay letters as an undergrad was going to office hours or setting up meetings
If nobody else is there ask generic cool questions
not necessarily about class material but just to chat math
"What do you wanna cover but not have enough time for?" is a question I just thought of which tbh I should've asked more in undergrad
ooh yea that's good
So, office hours are like this server but better?
I mean depends on the prof
Office hours with me are the closest you'll get to eudaimonia
lmfao
If you do it with some second rate prof then maybe not
I mean the point of office hours is to just socialize mathematically
not to get perfect answers to everything you're coming in with
if you wanted that you would just read papers and never talk to anyone
Lmao I remember in algebra one time I was the only one in office hours
And we were just thinking about simple groups a bit
Like A_5 is the smallest aside from Z/pZ
What's next?
And we were working through some problem
I remember I said something clever, I can't recall exactly what it was
But I made a good observation and my prof was like ooh nice
Feels good man
👍
I’m going into undergrad this fall
lmfao Dami from the mini conference today
check this dumb number theory problem out
consider ordered factorizations of natural numbers. What proportion of these are palindromic, asymptotically?
which proportion are anti-palindromic?
I just means like
Because in my mind ordering them excludes palindromes lol
for 12 considering (2,2,3) versus (2,3,2)
