there's also a nice formula due to newton, I won't give his exactly but there's a nice modified version of it: it's easy to see by geometric considerations that $\int_0^{1/2} \sqrt{1-x^2}$ is $\frac{\pi}{12} + \sqrt{3}/8$. so if you solve for pi and compute the integral by working out the power series for $\sqrt{1-x^2}$ and taking the antiderivative, you can compute pi pretty rapidly
